Book Synopsis The Earthenware Collector (Classic Reprint) by : G. Woolliscroft Rhead
Download or read book The Earthenware Collector (Classic Reprint) written by G. Woolliscroft Rhead and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earthenware Collector As old as civilization it self, the art of the potter presents a kaleidoscope of alluring charm. To paraphrase the word of Alexandre Brongniart, no branch of industry, viewed in reference either to its history or its theory, or its practice, offers more that is interesting and fascinating, regarding alike its economic application and its artistic aspect, than does the fictile art; nor exhibits products more simple, more varied, and their frailty notwithstanding, more desirable. Of course the crude vessels of ancient times, as well as the more serviceable and scientifically more beautiful articles of to-day, exist primarily for one and the same object the use and convenience of man. The story of the potter and his technique has been told repeatedly, sometimes as a general survey and sometimes as a specialised branch of a widely extended subject, but notwithstanding the numerous books devoted to it there is always something new to be recorded, fresh pieces to describe, new points to advance and discuss. Book excerpt: "Tin-glazed earthenware has been made in Europe since the 15th century. In Britain, floor tiles and drug pots were made in Aldgate, London in the 16th century by immigrant potters from the Low Countries. In the early 17th century, factories making dishes and other wares were set up in London close to the River Thames. Their products were initially much influenced by Chinese porcelain as well as by Italian maiolica. Manufacture spread from London to centres such as Bristol, Liverpool and Dublin. Known as 'gally ware' in the 17th century, this type of pottery has come to be known as 'delftware' from the Dutch town of Delft which was renowned for its manufacture ... The British Museum collection of delftware, which was established in the later part of the 19th century, is one of the finest in the world. It is especially notable for the number of pieces bearing dates and for those which document historical personages and events. This beautifully illustrated book will feature more than 140 items from this extensive collection and include pieces which have never before been fully described or published in colour."--Publisher's description.

Download or read book The Tastemakers written by Diana Davis and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the development, role, and influence of the British decorative art dealers who invented an Anglo-Gallic style for elite interiors. In this volume Diana Davis demonstrates how London dealers invented a new and visually splendid decorative style that combined the contrasting tastes of two nations. Departing from the conventional narrative that depicts dealers as purveyors of antiquarianism, Davis repositions them as innovators who were key to transforming old art objects from ancien régime France into cherished “antiques” and, equally, as creators of new and modified French-inspired furniture, bronze work, and porcelain. The resulting old, new, and reconfigured objects merged aristocratic French eighteenth-century taste with nineteenth-century British preference, and they were prized by collectors, who displayed them side by side in palatial interiors of the period. The Tastemakers analyzes dealer-made furnishings from the nineteenth-century patron’s perspective and in the context of the interiors for which they were created, contending that early dealers deliberately formulated a new aesthetic with its own objects, language, and value. Davis examines a wide variety of documents to piece together the shadowy world of these dealers, who emerge center stage as a traders, makers, and tastemakers.

Book Synopsis Pot-lids and Other Coloured Printed Staffordshire Wares by : K. V. Mortimer
Download or read book Pot-lids and Other Coloured Printed Staffordshire Wares written by K. V. Mortimer and published by Antique Collectors Club Dist. This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the first book on the subject for over twenty years, classifies all known authenticated pot-lids by subject, lists their many variations and sizes, assesses their rarity and value and provides much new information on their history and contents. Errors and omissions in the earlier literature, many perpetuated through successive publications, have been corrected and the whole listing has been renumbered to avoid the anomalies caused by the absence of flexibility in the old system. Every lid has been measured so that all size categories can be accurately defined and rarity has been gauged as accurately as possible by an examination of nearly all auction catalogues from 1924 to 2002. For the first time virtually every item is featured in full colour. The section on ware has been simplified and clarified and many previously unrecorded items are published for the first time. The floral sections have been extensively revised and extended. This is the most comprehensive volume ever produced on this subject and should be the standard reference for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Chats On Costume This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
