Book Synopsis Islamic Arms and Armor in The Metropolitan Museum of Art by : David G. Alexander
Download or read book Islamic Arms and Armor in The Metropolitan Museum of Art written by David G. Alexander and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armor and weaponry were central to Islamic culture not only as a means of conquest and the spread of the faith, but also as symbols of status, wealth, and power. The finest arms were made by master craftsmen working with the leading designers, goldsmiths, and jewelers, whose work transformed utilitarian military equipment into courtly works of art. This book reveals the diversity and artistic quality of one of the most important and encyclopedic collections of its kind in the West. The Metropolitan Museum's holdings span ten centuries and include representative pieces from almost every Islamic culture from Spain to the Caucasus. The collection includes rare early works, among them the oldest documented Islamic sword, and is rich in helmets and body armor, decorated with calligraphy and arabesques, that were worn in Iran and Anatolia in the late fifteenth century. Other masterpieces include a jeweled short sword (yatagan) with a blade of "watered" steel that comes from the court of Süleyman the Magnificent, a seventeenth-century gold-inlaid armor associated with Shah Jahan, and two gold-inlaid flintlock firearms belonging to the guard of Tipu Sultan of Mysore. Presenting 126 objects, each handsomely photographed and richly documented with a detailed description and discussion of its technical, historical, and artistic importance, this overview of the Met's holdings is supplemented by an introductory essay on the formation of the collection, and appendixes on iconography and on Turkman-style armor.

Riggs Collection It is, then, from an examination of good specimens of armor and arms of various periods that one real izes that they well deserve their place in a museum of art. And in this conclusion we need consider neither their historical value, as a means of picturing more accurately scenes and personages of known periods, nor their sentimental interest - which they possess to a degree rarely found in other Objects of art - nor their supposed mystical significance. In the last regard, we recall the myths of god-like armorers and enchanted arms, which belonged to all early times and to all peoples. Book Synopsis Armies and Politics in the Early Medieval West by : Bernard S. Bachrach
Download or read book Armies and Politics in the Early Medieval West written by Bernard S. Bachrach and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these articles Professor Bachrach starts by looking at aspects of the ’barbarian’ occupation of the land of the Roman Empire, from Britain to the Alan settlements in southern Gaul. His particular interest, however, is in the political and, above all, in the military structures that grew out of the Early Middle Ages. He has sought to demonstrate that there was a fundamental continuity in military organisation and tactics from the Merovingian through the Carolingian period. As he shows, there is no reason to connect the origins of ’feudalism’ with Charles Martel’s wish to create a force of cavalry, and it is a fallacy that he grasped the potential of the stirrup for enabling mounted shock combat. On the contrary, its use in the West progressed only slowly, and it had nothing to do with the origins or growth of feudalism.
