Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During WWI, everything ordinary people strove for was the essentials of living, like food and cloth. George Schreiner, who was working as a reporter for Associated Press in Europe, considered hunger the most horrible experience Central Europe had to come through. "The iron ration" was a name given to the portion of food the soldiers could eat at a battlefield. Usually, the iron ration was allowed to consume when a soldier was starving with hunger. Schreiner chose this term for the title to draw more attention to the problem of hunger in times of war and its role in the success of an army.

Book Synopsis The Human Body in Early Iron Age Central Europe by : Katharina Rebay-Salisbury
Download or read book The Human Body in Early Iron Age Central Europe written by Katharina Rebay-Salisbury and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identities and social relations are fundamental elements of societies. To approach these topics from a new and different angle, this study takes the human body as the focal point of investigation. It tracks changing identities of early Iron Age people in central Europe through body-related practices: the treatment of the body after death and human representations in art. The human remains themselves provide information on biological parameters of life, such as sex, biological age, and health status. Objects associated with the body in the grave and funerary practices give further insights on how people of the early Iron Age understood life and death, themselves, and their place in the world. Representations of the human body appear in a variety of different materials, forms, and contexts, ranging from ceramic figurines to images on bronze buckets. Rather than focussing on their narrative content, human images are here interpreted as visualising and mediating identity. The analysis of how image elements were connected reveals networks of social relations that connect central Europe to the Mediterranean. Body ideals, nudity, sex and gender, aging, and many other aspects of women’s and men’s lives feature in this book. Archaeological evidence for marriage and motherhood, war, and everyday life is brought together to paint a vivid picture of the past.

Book Synopsis The International Politics of East Central Europe by : Adrian G. V. Hyde-Price
Download or read book The International Politics of East Central Europe written by Adrian G. V. Hyde-Price and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Established in the belief that imperialism as a cultural phenomenon had as significant an effect on the dominant as it did on the subordinate societies, the "Studies in Imperialism" series seeks to develop the new socio-cultural approach which has emerged through cross-disciplinary work on popular culture, media studies, art history, the study of education and religion, sports history and children's literature. The cultural emphasis embraces studies of migration and race, while the older political, and constitutional, economic and military concerns are never far away. It incorporates comparative work on European and American empire-building, with the chronological focus primarily, though not exclusively, on the 19th and 20th centuries, when these cultural exchanges were most powerfully at work. This work explores the sexual attitudes and activities of those who ran the British Empire. The study explains the pervasive importance of sexuality in the Victorian Empire, both for individuals and as a general dynamic in the working of the system. Among the topics included in the book are prostitution, the manners and mores of missionaries and aspects of race in sexual behaviour.

Download or read book Balkan Worlds: The First and Last Europe written by Traian Stoianovich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-20 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encompassing the period from the Neolithic era to the troubled present, this book studies the peoples, societies and cultures of the area situated between the Adriatic Sea in the west and the Black Sea in the east, between the Alpine region and Danube basin in the north and the Aegean Sea in the south. This is not a conventional history of the Balkans. Drawing upon archaeology, anthropology, economics, psychology and linguistics as well as history, the author has attempted a "total history" that integrates as many as possible of the avenues and categories of the Balkan experience.
Book Synopsis Horsing Around by : W. Douglas McCombs
Download or read book Horsing Around written by W. Douglas McCombs and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horsing Around is the first publication devoted to the design, manufacture, and use of cast-iron hitching posts in America. This catalogue highlights the extraordinary collection of cast-iron hitching posts owned by Phil and Bunny Savino and exhibited in 2008 by the Albany Institute of History and Art. In addition to new scholarship, more than ninety examples of American-made hitching posts are illustrated in color, along with illustrations from nineteenth-century trade catalogues and patent designs. Hitching posts, like weathervanes, were utilitarian in nature, but have recently entered the realm of folk art with their sometimes whimsical and unusual forms. Horse heads, for example, allude to the function and purpose of the posts while eagles and flag-draped posts reflect the patriotic fervor that gripped Americans around the time of the Centennial in 1876. Other popular designs include dogs, snakes, globes, people, and architectural elements. Though most hitching posts are unmarked, there are excellent examples from foundries such as Starbuck's in Troy, New York, the J. W. Fiske Iron Works in Manhattan, and the Stewart Iron Works of Cincinnati, Ohio. W. Douglas McCombs is Curator of History at the Albany Institute of History and Art.

Book Synopsis A Modern History of European Cities by : Rosemary Wakeman
Download or read book A Modern History of European Cities written by Rosemary Wakeman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosemary Wakeman's original survey text comprehensively explores modern European urban history from 1815 to the present day. It provides a journey to cities and towns across the continent, in search of the patterns of development that have shaped the urban landscape as indelibly European. The focus is on the built environment, the social and cultural transformations that mark the patterns of continuity and change, and the transition to modern urban society. Including over 60 images that serve to illuminate the analysis, the book examines whether there is a European city, and if so, what are its characteristics? Wakeman offers an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates concepts from cultural and postcolonial studies, as well as urban geography, and provides full coverage of urban society not only in western Europe, but also in eastern and southern Europe, using various cities and city types to inform the discussion. The book provides detailed coverage of the often-neglected urbanization post-1945 which allows us to more clearly understand the modernizing arc Europe has followed over the last two centuries.
