This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the third annotated bibliography on this subject area to be compiled by these authors. The first, published by Gordon and Breach, Science Publishers, in 1971, was entitled AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON DIVING AND SUBMARINE MEDICINE. It covered material published during the 1960's. The second volume, entitled UNDERWATER MEDICINE AND RELATED SCIENCES: A GUIDE TO THE LITERATURE, published in 1973 by Plenum Press, covered primarily material published during 1970 and 1971, with some material from 1968 and 1969. The present volume covers material published during 1972 and 1973, but here again some earlier material has been included. The purpose of these annotated bibliographies is to make available a large proportion of the published material, in abstract form, indexed in such a manner as to make it possible to compile a reasonably complete annotated bibliography on any specific subject area in the field. It is possible thus to learn where the work is being done, by whom, and how extensively. Also, it becomes obvious what areas of research are lacking or inadequate. These specific searches can also form a background of reference material on which to base further research, or from which to write monographs or state-of-the-art surveys. Papers, articles and reports listed here are in most cases readily available.

Book excerpt: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has proven benefi cial for many types of wounds including diabetic ulcers, burns and wounds related to radiation therapy. But where did this technology come from? Who discovered oxygen? How did the Navy discover that divers could be treated for the bends in a hyperbaric chamber? How does hyperbaric science relate to airline pilots, deep sea divers and astronauts? All these topics will be explored; from the fi rst submariner to the largest hyperbaric chamber. The scientists throughout history have been gathered here along with their discoveries pertaining to hyperbaric environments. We employ hyperbaric science and the laws of gas every time we fl y in a jet, prepare food with a pressure cooker or even dive into a swimming pool. Man has always been driven to discover the depths of the ocean. But in ancient times, man was limited by the pressure that water exerts on him. How could a diver overcome this tremendous pressure? We, each and every human being on the face of the planet, have a column of air pushing down on us. This column of air goes from the top of our heads to the edge of outer space. So, the next time you feel you are under pressure, be sure to remember that YOU ARE!

Another, paralyzed, bobs helplessly on the surface, and when a poorly trained divemaster attempts rescue, things go from bad to worse. Two other divers, fascinated by the bountiful undersea life of the Caribbean, fail to notice that a powerful current is sweeping them rapidly away from their unattended boat. These are just a few of the true stories you’ll find in Diver Down, most of them involving diver error and resulting in serious injury or death. Each of these tales is accompanied by an in-depth analysis of what went wrong and how you can recognize, avoid, and respond to similar underwater calamities. This unique survival guide explores the gamut of diving situations, including cave and wreck diving, deep-water dives, river and drift diving, decompression sickness, and much more. It shows you how to prevent tragic mishaps through: Inspection and maintenance of primary and secondary diving gear Learning and following established safety protocols Confirming the training and credentials of diving professionals Practicing emergency responses under real-world conditions

Book excerpt: All diving accidents reported to the U.S. Navy Experimental Diving Unit during 1968 were coded and statistically analyzed. The incidence of decompression sickness was the most common accident to occur to divers. Those decompression accidents involving military divers were separated, and the various variables associated with this type of accident were analyzed. Several variables, such as the diver's physical characteristics, environmental diving conditions and treatment outcome were compared with similar data for the 1961- 1967 base period. Differences between the base period and 1968 are shown in percentages. In addition, significant and interesting case histories of accidents that occurred in 1968 are presented.

Book excerpt: This volume follows and updates AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ON DIVING AND SUBMARINE MEDICINE published by Gordon and Breach, Science Publishers, Inc., in 1971. The time period covered is primarily the calendar years 1970 and 1971. Also included, however, is much material from the calendar years 1968 and 1969 not in the previous publication. A brief analysis of the sources of material precedes the citations and abstracts, which comprise the main section of the volume. The bibliography is followed by a permuted subject index and an author index. Also included, following the indexes, is a micro thesaurus. Although no attempt has been made to do a critical subject analysis, such an analysis could be accomplished through selecting a particular subject, looking up the appropriate key works in the rotated index, identifying the abstracts, analyzing them, obtaining complete copy as desired, and completing the critical review.
