Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology presents a broad range of cases drawn from the clinical experience of authors Kenneth N. Levy, Kristen M. Kelly, and William J. Ray to take readers beyond theory into real-life situations. The authors take a holistic approach by including multiple perspectives and considerations, apart from those of just the patient. Each chapter follows a consistent format: Presenting Problems and Client Description; Diagnosis and Case Formulation; Course of Treatment; Outcome and Prognosis/Treatment Follow-up; and Discussion Questions. Providing empirically supported treatments and long-term follow-up in many case studies gives students a deeper understanding of each psychopathology and the effects of treatment over time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology presents actual clinical cases, providing developmental histories essential to appropriate diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. This text presents 23 distinct case studies, applying abstract theoretical research to real-world situations. Each study describes the clinical problem, demonstrates the formulation and implementation of a treatment plan, and discusses evidence of potential causes and prevalence. This comprehensive examination includes cases ranging from psychotic and personality disorders including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder to those concerning child development and aging such as attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder. Coverage of sometimes controversial subjects including dissociative identity disorder, gender dysphoria, autism spectrum disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder ensures contemporary relevance. Suitable for undergraduate and graduate study of abnormal psychology, this book presents an honest and unbiased view of the limitations and benefits of various treatment plans. Discussions of alternative methods including medication, electroconvulsive therapy, and psychosurgery, augment primary cognitive-behavioral approaches, allowing students a solid foundational knowledge of the subject.

Using case studies, this perspective examines the emergence of disorders over time, pays special attention to risk and protective factors that influence developmental processes and trajectories, and examines child psychopathology in the context of normal development. Designed to be flexible via its focused modular organization, the text reflects the latest changes to the DSM (DSM 5, 2013) and is updated with new research and developments in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Case Histories in Abnormal Psychology This assemblage of case histories grew out of the author's desire to supply his classes in army psychology with a greater variety of abnormal reaction types than was provided by their introductory textbook. The cases are used to illustrate and objectify assigned chapters in a standard textbook of abnormal psychology. Limited study-time of the student cadets made it unfeasible for them to read them in their original settings of exposition and discussion. Because of limited space we were unable to include any of the longer epitomies. That is regrettable. As a rule, they are more illuminating than the short, relatively incomplete cases. Also, for reasons which need not be considered here, there is some unevenness in coverage of the fundamental reaction types. Some of these disadvantages can and should be offset by the instructor's presenting supplementary cases in lecture or recitation periods. To others who may use this case book, it may be added that the instructor should be well acquainted with all of the source books from which the cases are taken in order that he may supply, as needed, each author's point of view as expressed in the original text.
