Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continental margins of the world constitute the most impressive and largest physiographic feature of the earth's surface, and one of fundamentally great geological significance. Continental margins have been the subject of increasing attention in recent years, an interest focused by a body of new data that has provided new insights into their character. This interest was further stimulated by the realization that, in addition to the abundant living resources, continental margins contain petroleum and mineral resources that are accessible with existing technology. This realization, along with their basic geological importance, has provoked further research into the nature of continental margins throughout the world. A summary of these findings, as related to both recent and ancient continental margins, is the subject of this book. At various times in the past we had been approached individually to prepare a basic reference to continental margins; we then proposed to do such a volume jointly. However, the stimulus for the present volume eventually arose from a Penrose Conference arranged through the Geological Society of America. This conference was attended by specialists of numerous disciplines and from throughout the world, many of whom insisted that such a volume would be both timely and useful. Consequently, we agreed to undertake the task of assembling this book, with the objectives of making it available as soon and as inexpensively as possible.

Book Synopsis The Geology of the Atlantic Ocean by : Kenneth O. Emery
Download or read book The Geology of the Atlantic Ocean written by Kenneth O. Emery and published by Springer. This book was released on 1984-12-05 with total page 1086 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosion of interest, effort, and information about the ocean since about 1950 has produced many thousand scientific articles and many hun dred books. In fact, the outpouring has been so large that authors have been unable to read much of what has been published, so they have tended to concentrate their own work within smaller and smaller subfields of oceanog raphy. Summaries of information published in books have taken two main paths. One is the grouping of separately authored chapters into symposia type books, with their inevitable overlaps and gaps between chapters. The other is production of lightly researched books containing drawings and tables from previous pUblications, with due credit given but showing assem bly-line writing with little penetration of the unknown. Only a few books have combined new and previous data and thoughts into new maps and syntheses that relate the contributions of observed biological, chemical, geological, and physical processes to solve broad problems associated with the shape, composition, and history of the oceans. Such a broad synthesis is the objective of this book, in which we tried to bring together many of the pieces of research that were deemed to be of manageable size by their originators. The composite may form a sort of plateau above which later studies can rise, possibly benefited by our assem bly of data in the form of new maps and figures.
Book Synopsis Crustal Properties Across Passive Margins by : C. E. Keen
Download or read book Crustal Properties Across Passive Margins written by C. E. Keen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in Geotectonics, 15: Crustal Properties across Passive Margins covers the papers presented at the symposium ""Crustal Properties across Passive Margins"", held at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia on June 19-23, 1978. The book focuses on theoretical modelling of the rheological properties in the upper mantle beneath oceans and continents and stratigraphic studies of the sedimentary basins. The selection first offers information on seismic refraction study of the continental edge off the Eastern United States and gravity field of the U.S. Atlantic continental margin. Topics include crustal sections, inner and outer quiet zones, alternative models and complications, gravity models, free-air anomaly map, and the ocean-continent transition zone. The text then takes a look at the geologic history of the passive margin off New England and the Canadian Maritime Provinces and geophysical observations bearing upon the origin of the Newfoundland Ridge. The manuscript elaborates on the age and origin of the deepest correlative structures recognized off Canada and Europe and geophysical transects of the Labrador Sea. Discussions focus on magnetics and gravity, stratigraphic control, consequences regarding subduction or rifting, and deep structures of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in crustal properties across passive margins.
Book Synopsis Sediment Fluxes in Coastal Areas by : Mohamed Maanan
Download or read book Sediment Fluxes in Coastal Areas written by Mohamed Maanan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed analysis and synthesis of the processes affecting sediments fluxes from watershed to worldwide coastal systems. The volume provides a comprehensive overview and constitutes a systematic description of the response of coastal systems to global and local changes, like climate change, sea level, land use and land cover change. The case studies cover a sequence of coastal environments such as lagoons, bays, estuaries, deltas and beaches. Sediment Fluxes in Coastal Areas is designed for researchers, professionals and for course-use in hydrology, oceanography, geography, geology, geomorphology and environmental science.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date synthesis of the Pre-Mesozoic Geology in France (Armorican and Central Massifs) and Related Areas (Aquitaine Basin, Vosges, Provence, Pyrenees, Western Alps, Corsica and Sardinia). The geological record is systematically presented, covering seismic reflection, gravity and magnetic data, stratigraphy, paleontology, structure, metamorphism, igneous activity and metallogeny. It is the most up-to-date English summary by French scientists, providing access to the vast literature on the topic mainly written in French. As such, it should be of great interest to an international audience.
