Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If white Americans could reveal what they really think about race, without the risk of appearing racist, what would they say? In this elegantly written and innovative book, Paul Sniderman and Edward Carmines illuminate aspects of white Americans' thinking about the politics of race previously hidden from sight. And in a thoughtful follow-up analysis, they point the way toward public policies that could gain wide support and reduce the gap between black and white Americans. Their discoveries will surprise pollsters and policymakers alike. The authors show that prejudice, although by no means gone, has lost its power to dominate the political thinking of white Americans. Concentrating on the new race-conscious agenda, they introduce a method of hidden measurement which reveals that liberals are just as angry over affirmative action as conservatives and that racial prejudice, while more common among conservatives, is more powerful in shaping the political thinking of liberals. They also find that the good will many whites express for blacks is not feigned but represents a genuine regard for blacks, which they will stand by even when given a perfectly acceptable excuse to respond negatively to blacks. More crucially, Sniderman and Carmines show that the current impasse over race can be overcome if we remember what we once knew. The strongest arguments in behalf of equality for black Americans reach beyond race to the moral principles that give the issue of race itself a moral claim on us.

Book excerpt: In the year 2049, a Venezuelan drug kingpin deliberately starts a conflict that threatens the soul of the United States by embroiling it in a civil race war, allowing him to gain more US territory and more clients. African American citizens are purposely pitted against whites in a tale of survival with only the kingpin coming out on top. As racially motivated violence escalates throughout the country, there are few choices for Calvin Tobias Jackson, the second African American president of the United States, who is desperately searching for a way to ensure the survival of the nation and of its people. Among those who may offer help are a group of Special Forces soldiers outfitted with technology allowing them to vanish in any terrain; Kareem Toussaint, a teenage genius with an IQ higher than Einstein’s; Jessica Walters, a reporter being swept up into the moral dilemma of reporting the truth as she sees it; Xavier Greyson, a billionaire businessman looking to protect his DC neighborhoods; and Stacy Williams, a single mother recovering from domestic abuse. But help may also be coming from an unlikely source—the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Set in the near future, this novel depicts a nation in the throes of civil race war as a handful of African American heroes work to end the violence.

Book excerpt: The storyline takes place somewhere between 1987 and 1988 in Brooklyn, New York. The four main characters: Yvette, Ko-ko, Donovan, and Carmine go through their life events, albeit in different directions. Yvette, the dreamer believes life ceases to exist without her. Self-absorbed and at times, selfish; she is an enigma in itself. Ko-ko, Yvette's best friend, and a straight "A" student, has goals of college. She exudes confidence and determination and does not let anything or anyone stand in her way. Donovan, the star athlete at his school has high expectations of himself and maintains an aura of "invincibility" around him at all times. His girlfriend is Ko-ko and has plans on marrying her one day. Carmine, Yvette's self-described "sweetheart" after a chance encounter at a club, maintains a cloud of secrecy and suspense. With Carmine, it is classic example of "what you see is what you get." The overall theme of the book strategically shifts rapidly from playful to eventful with each passing page. As in reality, characters are engrossed in drama, danger and at times, misfortune. Choices are ultimately made, and as a result, repercussions are inevitable. Expect misfortune to be a central focus as well as the unexpected. More importantly, see how each central character to the book deals with their individual misfortune and the unexpected in their own unique way. Book excerpt: In 1952 a country clergyman called Smith begins his tortuous quest for the Holy Grail of alchemy - the Philosophers' Stone which transmutes base metal to gold and confers immortality. As he pits himself against the bizarre perils of the Great Work, it becomes clear that his arcane transformations are as much spiritual as chemical. Gradually the shadow of alchemy falls over those around him; a young girl whose sudden pregnancy is a local scandal; Janet, trapped in a barren marriage; and Robert who pursues his own quest for the legendary blue glass of Chartres. Thirty years later, Eileen comes to live in Smith's vicarage. In the medieval cellar she unearths a hidden manuscript and begins to read of secret fire and mysterious prime matter, a green lion and a raven's head, a fatal conjunction of king and queen, a descent into Blackness and putrefaction. As she penetrates farther into the alchemical labyrinth, she is haunted both by her own history and by that of her neighbours, the menacing Mrs Zetterberg and the disfigured Pluto - and, finally, by the enigma of Smith himself. In separate but interwoven accounts, Smith and Eileen strive towards the one thing necessary for the Work's success - the great Secret guarded by the paradoxical Mercurius, who leads them to the zero point where Heaven is wedded to Earth and the miraculous Stone appears at the intersection of time and eternity. By reconstructing a highly sophisticated but almost forgotten world-view, Mercurius restores to us our own spiritual heritage which, rooted in the alchemists' dark retorts, will perhaps flower in the light of the future.
