Book excerpt: Apical periodontitis is one of the most common inflammatory diseases that affect humans and is caused by microbial infection of the dental root canal system. A thorough understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis of apical periodontitis is essential for high-quality endodontic practice based on a solid scientific foundation. The first section of this book deals with microbiologic and pathophysiologic aspects of the different manifestations of apical periodontitis, while the second section describes the best evidence for predictable treatment and prevention of the disease. Clinical techniques and protocols to treat endodontic infections are described in detail. This new edition boasts a team of renowned authorities in the field that contribute state-of-the-art evidence about the biology and practice of the endodontic treatment of teeth with infected root canals. The content is supplemented with numerous full-color illustrations and radiographs. This book is a definitive guide to those involved with the prevention and treatment of endodontic infections.

Book excerpt: Endodontic treatment saves the tooth from extraction but only adequate restoration will reinstate it as a long-term functioning member of the mouth. The restoration of a tooth by root canal treatment is of limited value unless the crown of tooth is satisfactorily restored. The manner in which a root canal filled tooth is restored is therefore considerable importance. The restoration of endodontically treated tooth is complicated by the fact that much or all of the coronal tooth structure which normally would be used in the retention of the restoration has been destroyed by caries, previous restorations, trauma, and the endodontic access preparation itself. The endodontically treated tooth is a unique subset of teeth requiring restoration because of several factors such as dehydrated dentin, decreased, decreased structural integrity and impaired neurosensory feed back mechanism when compared to a vital tooth. However, the treatment goal must be based upon a multitude of factors specific for each patient, so that the strategic architectural aspects that have/greatest impact on the ultimate strength of the pulpless tooth can be restored/reinforced.

Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book combines explanation of the scientific base underpinning vital pulp treatment with description of current and emerging trends in clinical practice. It guides the reader through modern views on pulp diagnostics, deep caries, and pulp exposure management, leading to an analysis of the biological aspects of regenerative techniques such as angiogenesis, neurogenesis, inflammation, and epigenetics. In the later chapters, practical considerations relating to bioengineering, biomaterial choice, revitalization, and stem cell-based procedures are discussed and their likely therapeutic impact considered. Aimed at dental students, postgraduates, and research-minded dental practitioners, this translational book summarizes state-of-the-art scientific knowledge on dentin–pulp interactions and regenerative endodontics, while highlighting the opportunities to incorporate recent developments into everyday practice. Readers will also find extensive discussion of potential future developments and research avenues relating to each aspect of this exciting and rapidly developing field.
