The study addresses job attitudes, as measured by the USAF Organizational Assessment Package, and their relationship to career intent. The study concludes that personnel intending to separate from the service have less positive/more negative attitudes toward the job and officers planning to retire within the next 12 months have a less positive attitude once a retirement decision is made. Book excerpt: Information about the attitudes, job satisfactions, and career intentions of graduates of the Air Force Officer Training School (OTS) was obtained after the respondents had completed about 18 months of commissioned service. The results were compared with findings obtained at the time of graduation from OTS. Career intentions crystallized during the intervening months as the undecided made up their minds. Consistency of opinion was shown by the fact that about two-thirds of those who had expressed an opinion at time of graduation still retained the same opinion. Information obtained at time of graduation was still predictive of career intent, as was educational and assignment information. An attitude measure, the Importance-Possibility Scale, showed that a sense of accomplishment and competent supervision were rated among the most important of the 22 job attributes. Significant differences in distribution of ratings were found between the career-minded and noncareer-minded groups.

Book excerpt: The impact of spouse attitudes and attributes on the career intent and job related attitudes of Air Force enlisted personnel was assessed using the Air Force's new Family Survey (AFFS) to measure spouse attitudes and the Organizational Assessment Package to assess the Air Force member's career intent and job attitudes. The Factor structure of the AFFS confirmed its potential utility for assessing critical family variables. Spouses generally viewed Air Force life as more stressful than civilian life, yet most continued to be supportive of and committed to the Air Force. Prominent sources of stress for these families were disruptions caused by work schedules, TDYs, and military exercises and recalls. Reduced employment opportunities and a reduction in family income attendant upon transfer to a new duty location were also viewed as having a negative impact on the family. It proved possible to predict the career intent and job satisfaction of Air Force members from spouse attitudes and other family variables, most importantly from the compatibility of the marital pair's work schedules, the positiveness of the spouse's view of the Air Force and, for career intent only, the perceived stressfulness of the Air Force member's job and of Air Force life for the family. Implications for Air Force policy are briefly discussed.

Book excerpt: The analysis of job attitudes can be helpful to commanders and functional managers by highlighting factors where improved leadership and management practices can impact performance and retention. Using the Leadership and Management Development Center's Organizational Assessment Package data base, this project compared the attitudes of contracting and manufacturing personnel to those of personnel in other Air Force career fields. Among its findings are that contracting and manufacturing personnel have a higher degree of general job satisfaction than do personnel in other career fields. However, it also identified less positive 65XX personnel attitudes about performance goals, feedback, training, autonomy, and work repetition for various personnel categories. The report recommends ways to capitalize on strengths and compensate for weakenesses in the 65XX career field. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes and compares career intent of female and male Air Force personnel. The data for the study were obtained from the Quality of Air Force Life survey conducted in February 1980. The main analysis techniques used were the Automatic Interaction Detection (AID) algorithm and stepwise regression. The study analyzed the responses of female and male officer and enlisted personnel in three groups: the total population, first term personnel, and personnel with four to ten years of service. The primary conclusion of the study is that different factors affect the career intent for women and men. Career intent for female officers is largely dependent upon job satisfaction, whereas, attitude of spouse of immediate family is the major influence for male officer and enlisted personnel. Extrinsic factors, such as a high salary and the belief they can get a better break in civilian life, are important to enlisted women. Job satisfaction was also examined for all male and female officer and enlisted personnel. The results indicate that job challenge and preparation for future responsibility are major factors of job satisfaction. The relationship with the supervisor or superior is also an important factor of female job satisfaction. (Author).

Book excerpt: The study is a reexamination of survey data obtained in 1964, which have been updated against a current criterion of active duty versus separated from the service. The initial study was undertaken to examine factors related to the career intent of officers with limited commissioned service. At that time, the USAF Training and Utilization Survey was designed and administered to a 20-percent sample of all officers with less than seven years of military service. For the current study, subjects having less than 12 months of active duty at the time the survey was administreed were omitted. Criterion data were obtained for 4,006 subjects. These subjects were further subdivided into various subgroups to account for differences in source and type of commission. The overall retention rate was 65 percent for this ample; however, there were differences in the various subgroups. Examination of the stated career intention of these subjects suggested that those who has a definite positive or negative attitude toward a military career were fairly consistent in their intent and actual decision. The overall correlation between the stated career intent and the criterion was .56. Job characteristics or rewards were also examined. In general there was little or no relationship between the importance of a reward and the attainability of that characteristic. (Author).

More specifically, what relationship exists between their decision to reenlist or not reenlist and their feelings toward an Air Force career"--from introduction.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the research was to identify factors related to career intentions of Scientists and Engineers in the Air Force. The study examined the assumptions underlying general organizational retention research for relevance to Air Force retention studies. A literature review was conducted and a theoretical discussion of the typical assumptions in retention research was presented. Several of these assumptions were shown to be questionably applicable to Air Force retention research. A survey of Scientists and Engineers in the Air Force was then analyzed and interpreted using a modified model based on the theoretical discussion. Results of the survey suggested that career-oriented Scientists and Engineers may have a different need structure than their non-career-oriented counterparts. Needs for managing and applied research seemed to characterize the non-career-oriented Scientist. Career-oriented officers were generally more optimistic about satisfying important needs while in the Air Force, and they preferred a professional-officer identity to a professional-Scientist identity. Modest correlations between various aspects of active duty experience and career intent suggest that pre-commissioning attitudes, particularly their sources and relative impact on career decisions, should be investigated further. Career-oriented Scientists and Engineers may start out career-oriented and their active duty experiences simply sustain that orientation. Likewise, the non-career-oriented Scientists and Engineers may simply perceive active duty experiences as supporting their initial attitudes regarding a military career. (Author).
