Book Synopsis Out Standing in the Field by : Sandra Perron
Download or read book Out Standing in the Field written by Sandra Perron and published by Cormorant Books. This book was released on 2017-04-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some books are catalysts. Shake Hands with the Devil was one. For 2017, that book is Out Standing in the Field. In her memoir, Sandra Perron describes her experience of the Canadian Military - one of the most important institutions of our nation. What she has to say is exactly what the top brass has been paying lip-service to for years, and doing nothing to improve. In 2016, the Auditor General's Report noted that the military had no strategy to recruit women, even though they are required to meet a target that 25% of the uniformed personnel be women. According to Statistics Canada, 1,000 members of our military say they have been sexually assaulted in the past year. In her revealing and moving memoir, Sandra Perron, Canada's first female infantry officer and a member of the Royal 22e Régiment - the legendary "Van Doos" - describes her fight against a system of institutional sexism. Though repeatedly identified as top of her class throughout her training, she was subject to harassment by her male colleagues. Her military experience, however, wasn't all negative. Through two deployments to Bosnia and Croatia, Perron forged lasting friendships with men and women, serving her country with courage and compassion, and her determination helped pave the way for women's inclusion in the Armed Forces. Out Standing in the Field is the story of a soldier who refused to let her comrades or her country down, even while serving a military institution that failed her repeatedly. Beautifully written, Perron's memoir is a testament to her fortitude and patriotism, and serves as proof that the spirit of a true hero cannot be bent or broken.
Book Synopsis Building the Army’s Backbone by : Andrew L. Brown
Download or read book Building the Army’s Backbone written by Andrew L. Brown and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1939, Canada’s tiny army began its remarkable expansion into a wartime force of almost half a million soldiers. No army can function without a backbone of skilled non-commissioned officers (NCOs) – corporals, sergeants, and warrant officers – and the army needed to create one out of raw civilian material. Building the Army’s Backbone tells the story of how senior leadership created a corps of NCOs that helped the burgeoning force train, fight, and win. This innovative book uncovers the army’s two-track NCO-production system: locally organized training programs were run by units and formations, while centralized training and talent-distribution programs were overseen by the army. Meanwhile, to bring coherence to the two-track approach, the army circulated its best-trained NCOs between operational forces, the reinforcement pool, and the training system. The result was a corps of NCOs that collectively possessed the necessary skills in leadership, tactics, and instruction to help the army succeed in battle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history non-commissioned officers (NCOs) have played a central role in armies as disciplinarians, closely associated with the welfare of the troops and discipline in the ranks. Although at low levels of command officers and NCOs were allies, a strong divide existed between them. Officers, who held formal command authority, were educated to different standards and controlled every aspect of army doctrine and policy. The NCO corps remained, figuratively, in the barracks, separate from decisions effecting the employment and development of the army. relationship and in the expectations of NCOs themselves. The social gap between the ranks has narrowed and separation based on differences in education has become less distinct. Young soldiers are more aware of social, military and international issues than ever before. Better educated soldiers and NCOs now expect to be involved in unit decisions and are less likely to routinely accept the idea that officers know best. The challenge for the army of today is to recognize the opportunities for positive and to see that the army of the future takes them into account. officers, considers this challenge. The authors examine the historical role of NCOs as well as the factors influencing the future army and future NCO recruits. They discuss the implications for education, training, doctrine and organization, offering comparative assessments from allied armies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert ‘Mac’ MacIver had always been interested in aviation, and fate takes its course when he looks up to see a military jet flying overhead just after finishing his last exam at university in the mid-1970s. He soon finds himself at a Canadian Armed Forces recruiting centre, where he applies to become a military pilot. Beginning with basic officer training (boot camp), through many phases of flying training, and then operational assignments, Mac experiences all that the military has to offer; the best – camaraderie, mentorship, and the opportunity to fly and learn new skills – and the worst – a ‘Hierarchy of Loyalty’ designed to protect those at the top, layers of bureaucracy, and equipment that puts soldiers’ lives at risk. During his two decades of service, Mac meets the ‘Believers’, those who think the military has a real combat capability, and the ‘Deceivers’, those who know better but go along for career purposes. Despite these players, he has an interesting career that includes Tactical and Search and Rescue helicopter, and VIP fixed-wing flying. That is, until he encounters the ‘Star Chamber’ workings of the military’s investigative process and then must also fight the misdiagnosis of a deadly disease. These dealings expose the need for effective representation of military members in conflict with unchecked authority. Mac can only rely on his own allies: perseverance and self-reliance. Written by a military pilot, this semi-autobiographical story is a must read for anyone who is interested in aviation, has experience with the Canadian military, or is interested in a military career.

Download or read book Trajectory written by R. Douglas McBride and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-05-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Lieutenant Andrew McBride was two years out of Kingston's Royal Military College and had been posted to Second Royal Canadian Horse Artillery out of Petawawa. His skill and dedication had already caught the eye of his commanding officer, and by all accounts, he had a promising future ahead of him. But in the summer of 2001, while completing compulsory training as an artillery officer, his military career was unexpectedly and unfairly derailed. At twenty-four years old, Andrew was looking at the loss of everything he had been working towards for as long as he could remember. What followed was a protracted twelve-year fight with the Canadian Armed Forces that grew uglier and more entrenched with each battle. Trajectory takes a hard look at how Canada's military treats its own and examines the mindsets that need to shift if we, as a country, are going to afford our soldiers the same rights and freedoms that they themselves protect on our behalf. All author proceeds will be donated to The Canadian Veterans Advocacy. trajectoryproject.net
Download or read book A Soldier First written by Rick Hillier and published by HarperCollins Canada. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 2008, General Rick Hillier retired as Chief of the Defence staff of the Canadian Forces. You could almost hear the sigh of relief in Ottawa as Canada’s most popular, and most controversial, military leader since the Second World War left a role in which he’d been as frank, unpredictable and resolutely apolitical as any of his predecessors. Born and raised in Newfoundland, Hillier joined the military as a young man and quickly climbed the ranks. He played a significant role in such domestic challenges as the ice storm that paralyzed much of eastern Ontario and Quebec in 1998, and quickly became a player on the international scene, commanding an American corps in Texas and a multinational NATO task force in Bosnia-Herzegovina. But it was his role as General Rick Hillier, Canada’s Chief of the Defence staff, that defined him as a Canadian icon. In Afghanistan, Canada faced its first combat losses since the Korean War, with every casualty becoming front page news. A country formerly ambivalent, or even angry, about its role in the conflict suddenly became gripped by the drama unfolding not only in a war zone halfway around the world but in unfriendly conference rooms in Ottawa. There, as everywhere, Hillier pulled no punches, demanding more funding, more troops and more appreciation for the women and men fighting a war on foreign soil. This hard-hitting, honest account of Hillier’s role—told in his own words—will be one of the most important books published in Canada this decade.
