Book excerpt: Excerpt from Care and Diseases of Trout The size of the raceways may vary widely, dependent on local conditions, but in all cases they should be much longer than wide and supplied with sufficient water to insure a good circulation. Un less there is an exceptionally large flow of water it is believed that the, raceways should be not over 3m 5 feet wide with a maximum length of 50 to 75 feet. Only a very slight slope on the bottom is necessary, and the water in the lowest part should be not over 12 to 15 inches in depth. In such a raceway it will be found that the fish will be scattered quite uniformly along its length, and there will be little danger of the majority collecting at one end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fish Diseases If the mucous membrane lining the mouth be reckoned with the integument, of which it really is a part, it may be said that the affection under discussion is strictly a cutaneous disease, comparable to ringworm among men. However badly a fish may have been diseased, there is no trace of the affection in the abdominal cavity or in any of the viscera, and the muscles and deep-seated bones appear healthy. Some say that the liver is enlarged and soft, but I have seen the liver quite healthy in very severe cases. The fish appear to suffer considerable irritation from the disease; but how far this is a primary symptom, and how far it results from the entanglement of multitudes of minute grains of sand in the fluffy coat of the diseased skin, is uncertain. Badly diseased fish in aquaria, the water of which contains 'no suspended particles of Sand, do not show signs of any particular irritation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a highly polymorphic and diverse multigene locus in all jawed vertebrate species that has an integral role in adaptive/innate immune systems, transplantation, and infectious and autoimmune diseases. The MHC supra-locus in mammalian vertebrates is usually partitioned into three distinct regions, known as classes I, II, and III, which, to varying extents, can be found conserved in nonmammalian jawed vertebrates, such as bony fish, amphibians, and bird lineages. The MHC gene region is characterized particularly by the expression of class I and class II glycoproteins that bind peptides derived from intracellular or extracellular antigens to circulating T-cells. While this expressed antigenic specificity remains the predominant interest with respect to MHC function and polymorphism in a population, a broader concept has emerged that examines the MHC as a multifunctional polymorphic controller that facilitates and regulates genome diversity with a much greater array of functions and effects than just MHC-restricted antigen recognition. This volume of 19 reprints presented by various experts and collected from the Special Issue of Cells on “MHC in Health and Disease” covers a broad range of topics on the genomic diversity of the MHC regulatory system in various vertebrate species, including MHC class I, II, and III genes; innate and adaptive immunity; neurology; transplantation; haplotypes; infectious and autoimmune diseases; fecundity; conservation; allelic lineages; and evolution. Taken together, these articles demonstrate the immense complexity and diversity of the MHC structure and function within and between different vertebrate species.
