This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major need of all cardiologists and surgeons involved with the application of allograft tissue to cardiac surgical reconstructions is met by this unique atlas. Step by step, it carefully describes the procedures involved in acquiring, sterilizing, and cryo-preserving allograft valves as well as the surgical technique used in left and right ventricular outflow tract reconstructions. All of the information needed to perform the reconstructions is given, including relevant references and applicable variations in method. Excellent illustrations accompany the description of surgical technique. All of the techniques are based on classic approaches, but assimilate the authors' modifications arrived at through vast experience. The wealth of references, illustrations and expertise in this volume make it a valuable asset for all cardiac surgeons.
Book Synopsis Cardiac Reconstructions with Allograft Tissues by : Richard A. Hopkins
Download or read book Cardiac Reconstructions with Allograft Tissues written by Richard A. Hopkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-11-12 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryopreserved allograft tissues are now standard materials for the reconstructive cardiac surgeon. Since publication of the first edition ("Cardiac Reconstructions with Allograft Valves") in 1989, the field has progressed dramatically with increased clinical use of cardiovascular allograft tissues, with the development of new surgical techniques, and with advances in the understanding of the fundamentals of valve transplantation biology and cryopreservation. As a result, over two-thirds of the present volume represents new material. Fifty-six authors bring their expertise to thirteen comprehensive, lavishly illustrated sections which discuss the principles of the use of homograft valves, major clinical series of homograft valves for both left and right ventricular outflow tracts, cryopreserved allograft tissue for cardiac reconstruction, cell biology of heart valve leaflets, cryobiology of heart valve preservation, morphological, biochemical, and explant pathology studies of allograft heart valves, allograft valve banking, as well as detailed explanation of surgical techniques for valve and root methods for left and right ventricular outflow tract reconstructions, the Ross operation and variants, and complex reconstructions. A final section presents potential future directions for the field. Over 400 illustrations, created expressly for this book, depict the surgical techniques from the perspective of the surgeon standing at the operating table. All surgeons performing pediatric and/or adult valve replacements and reconstructive cardiac surgeries will benefit from the described methods. Cardiothoracic residents and cardiologists will also find the text useful. It will provide the surgeon with an enhanced understanding of the biological and material properties of allografts and increased familiarity with the range of surgical techniques applicable for the use of these valves, particularly in the successful management of challenging cardiac reconstructions.>

Book excerpt: This guide provides state-of-the-art information in order to maximise the quality and minimise the risks during donation, procurement, testing, processing, preservation, storage and distribution of tissues and cells. As with all transplanted material of human origin, tissues and cells carry risks of disease transmission, which must be controlled by the application of scrupulous donor selection criteria (including testing) and comprehensive quality systems. The idea behind this guide is to help professionals on a practical level by providing generic guidance that will help improve the rate of successful clinical application of tissues and cells. The guide makes reference to EU mandatory requirements where appropriate and describes generally-accepted good practice. It has been divided into two parts. Part A contains general requirements applicable to all establishments involved in the donation, procurement, testing, processing, preservation, storage and distribution of tissues and cells. Part B contains specific guidelines and requirements for the different tissue and/or cell types

Book Synopsis Cardiac Valve Allografts 1962–1987 by : A.C. Yankah
Download or read book Cardiac Valve Allografts 1962–1987 written by A.C. Yankah and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the genius of Gordon Murray in Toronto that introduced the use of allografts into cardiac surgery in the 1950s. Soon after this on opposite sides ofthe world, Sir Brian Barratt-Boyes in Auckland, New Zealand, and Mr. Donald Ross in London, undertook to use allografts for the replacement of diseased aortic valves. Since that time the global interest in allografts has been patchy, episodic, and without a con sensus. Nonetheless, for the last 20 years at least three groups in the world have steadfastly pursued the development of new and relevant information concerning the use of allograft valves in humans. These are the centres of Sir Brian Barratt Boyes, Mr. Donald Ross, and Mark O'Brien in Brisbane. More recently, talented investigators, including Drs. Yankah, Yacoub, and others, have been developing information concerning the immunological aspects of the use of allografts, as well as their clinical use. No doubt, at present, cardiac valve allografts of one sort or another are the devices of choice for conduits and have an important place in the surgery of aortic valve replacement. Even so, in the mind of this writer at least, the future usefulness of allografts for the replacement of diseased cardiac valves and conduits between a ventricle and the pulmonary artery, remains problematic, and depends upon improvements in other devices for this purpose and upon improve ments that may be made in preparing and using allografts.

It contains contributions from numerous authors at European centers of vascular surgery. Both the young surgeon in training and the more experienced surgeon continuing training will find in this book all the necessary instructions for the diagnosis, preoperative preparation, and reconstructive surgery of the arteries, veins, and lymph vessels (the coronary vessels are excluded from this book, as they are covered separately). The chapters are structured according to a uniform scheme, with sections on special anatomy, indications, surgical tactics, and operative technique. The dynamics of individual operations are illustrated, step by step, in sequences of clear, multicolored figures. Aftercare and alternative angiologic therapies are covered. The vascular surgeon will find here new variants on the usual operative techniques and much stimulating discussion of complications and their prevention and treatment.
