Book excerpt: Carbonate margin, slope and basinal depositional environments, and their transitions, are highly dynamic and heterogeneous components of carbonate platform systems. Carbonate slopes are of particular interest because they form repositories for volumetrically significant amounts of sediment produced from nearly all carbonate environments, and form the links between shallow-water carbonate platform settings where prevailing in situ factories reside and their equivalent deeper-water settings dominated by resedimentation processes. Slope environments also provide an extensive stratigraphic record that, although is preserved differently than platform-top or basinal strata, can be utilized to unravel the growth evolution, sediment factories, and intrinsic to extrinsic parameters that control carbonate platform systems. In addition to many stimulating academic aspects of carbonate margin, slope, and basinal settings, they are increasingly recognized as significant conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs as well. The papers in this volume, which are drawn from the presentations made at the AAPG Annual Meeting in Long Beach, California (USA), in May 2012, as well as solicited submissions, provide insights into the spectrum of deposit types, stratal configurations, styles of growth, spatial architectures, controlling factors behind variations, and the hydrocarbon reservoir potential observed across the globe in these systems. The sixteen papers in this Special Publication include conceptual works, subsurface studies and outcrop studies, and are grouped into sections on conceptual works or syntheses, margin to basin development and controlling factors, architecture and controls on carbonate margins, and carbonate distal slope and basin floor development.

Gigapan[superscript TM] photomosaics, measured sections, and thin sections of the outcrops help to identify locations, geometries, and continuity of gravity flow deposits, the primary depositional features in the Hales Limestone. The facies identified in the Hales Limestone are: (1a) clast- and matrix-supported conglomerate-breccia beds, (1b) packstone-grainstone beds, (2) alternating thin, planar calcisiltstone and carbonate mudstone beds, (3) wavy, rippled, and cross-bedded calcisiltstone beds with carbonate mudstone, (4) thin, planar carbonate mudstone, and (5) slumped and folded beds of interbedded carbonate mudstone and calcisiltstone. Where facies 1a has a calcisiltstone matrix, it is interpreted to be a turbidite deposit; where it has a carbonate mudstone matrix, it is interpreted as a debris flow deposit. Facies lb is interpreted to be grain flow deposits. Facies 2-5 are interpreted to record interbedded distal turbidites (calcisiltstone) and background, pelagic carbonate mudstone. This study focuses on the gravity flow deposits (turbidite and debris flow deposits) in the Hales Limestone. The 80% of gravity flow deposits that are continuous across the outcrop formed as strike-continuous aprons, and the 20% of gravity flow deposits that are not continuous across the outcrop formed as individual depositional lobes. Approximately 85% of these gravity flow deposits were formed by turbidity flows, and 15% were formed by debris flows. Book excerpt: High-resolution multibeam bathymetry and sub-bottom profile data from offshore Great Bahama Bank, covering an area of 6,500 km2, allow an assessment of the evolution of the slope and basin environment. The data reveal a substantial variability in the slope morphology. Three different sedimentary processes (downslope mass gravity flows, margin collapse, and contour currents) control this variability in slope morphology. The deposits that result from these processes produce a consistent facies distribution along the slope, consisting of four morphofacies: 1) a steep upper slope with an onlapping sediment wedge, 2) a toe-of-slope with redeposited carbonates, 3) a basin floor covered with pelagic sediments, and 4) an elevated seafloor with pockmarks. The margin and uppermost slope is steep and cemented, with declivities ranging from 20° to 70°. The steep slope is onlapped by a sediment wedge that reaches a thickness of 100 m and extends >5 km basinward. The lower slope and toe-of-slope is dominated by coarse-grained sediments and debris from mass-gravity flows. Most of the coarse-grained sediment is funneled through closely spaced gullies on the middle slope and deposited as turbidite beds at the toe-of-slope. These turbidite deposits are arranged in lobes and apron system. In this area fine-grained sediment is largely winnowed away by ocean currents. Margin and slope instability add to the strike variability. Four segments of the platform margin collapse have been identified. Margin collapse features are characterized by crooked and convex bankward morphology. The smallest collapse margin scar is 3 km long and the largest scar is more than 20 km long. The 20 km long scar eroded bankward more than 350 m and produced an extensive megabreccia on the adjacent slope and basin floor that extends tens of kilometers from the margin. Contour currents that flow in the Old Bahama Channel transport drift sediment to the basinal are of this study where they interfinger with bank-derived the toe-of-slope deposits. The surface of the drift deposit is littered by thirty pockmarks generated by water and gas escape. The close proximity of these pockmarks to the Cuban fold and thrust belt indicates that the degassing is related to overpressure from by tectonic activity.
