Book Synopsis Free-Radical-Induced DNA Damage and Its Repair by : Clemens Sonntag
Download or read book Free-Radical-Induced DNA Damage and Its Repair written by Clemens Sonntag and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-20 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The free-radical chemistry of DNA had been discussed in some detail in 1987 in my book The Chemical Basis of Radiation Biology. Obviously, the more recent developments and the concomitant higher level of understanding of mechanistic details are missing. Moreover, in the living cell, free-radical DNA damage is not only induced by ionizing radiation, but free-radical-induced DNA damage is a much more general phenomenon. It was, therefore, felt that it is now timely to review our present knowledge of free-radical-induced DNA damage induced by all conceivable free-radical-generating sources. Originally, it had been thought to include also a very important aspect, the repair of DNA damage by the cell’s various repair enzymes. Kevin Prise (Cancer Campaign, Gray Laboratory, L- don) was so kind to agree to write this part. However, an adequate description of this strongly expanding area would have exceeded the allocated space by much, and this section had to be omitted. The directors of the Max-Planck-Institut für Strahlenchemie (now MPI für Bioanorganische Chemie), Karl Wieghardt and Wolfgang Lubitz, kindly allowed me to continue to use its facilities after my retirement in 2001. Notably, our - brarian, Mrs. Jutta Theurich, and her right-hand help, Mrs. Rosemarie Schr- er, were most helpful in getting hold of the literature. I thank them very much. Without their constant help, this would have been very difficult indeed.

Book Synopsis Carbon-Centered Radicals II / Kohlenstoffradikale II by : K.-D. Asmus
Download or read book Carbon-Centered Radicals II / Kohlenstoffradikale II written by K.-D. Asmus and published by Springer. This book was released on 1984-12-01 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free radicals, which are key intermediates in many thermal, photochemical and radiation processes, are important for a proper understanding of fundamental natural processes and the successful development of organic syntheses. After about one decade "volume II/18" serves as a supplement and extension to "volume II/13" and covers rate constants and other kinetic data of free radical reactions in liquids. "Furthermore II/18" contains new chapters on reactions of radicals in excited states and of carbenes, nitrenes and analogues. Selected species in aqueous solutions for which other compilations are available were deliberately omitted as before, and for the same reason electron transfer equilibria of organic radicals were not covered.
Book Synopsis Reactive Modifiers for Polymers by : S. Al-Malaika
Download or read book Reactive Modifiers for Polymers written by S. Al-Malaika and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical modification of polymers by reactive modifiers is no longer an academic curiosity but a commercial reality that has delivered a diverse range of speciality materials for niche markets: reactively grafted styrenic alloys, maleated polyolefins, super-tough nylons, silane modified and moisture-cured polyolefins, and thermoplastic elastomers, are but few exam ples of commercial successes. Although the approach of reactive modification of polymers has been largely achieved either in solution or in the solid state (through in situ reactions in polymer melts), it is the latter route that has attracted most attention in the last two decades owing to its flexibility and cost-effective ness. This route, referred to as reactive processing, focuses on the use of suitable reactive modifier(s) and the adoption of conventional polymer processing machinery, an extruder or a mixer, as a chemical reactor, to perform in situ targeted reactions for chemical modification of preformed polymers. This relatively simple, though scientifically highly challenging, approach to reactive modification offers unique opportunities in exploiting various reactive modifiers for the purpose of altering and transforming in a controlled manner the properties of preformed commercial polymers into new/speciality materials with tailor-made properties and custom-designed performance for target applications. Such an economically attractive route constitutes a radical diversion away from the traditional practices of manufacturing new polymers from monomers which involves massive in vestments in sophisticated technologies and chemical plants.

Book Synopsis Catalytic Hydrogenation over Platinum Metals by : Paul Rylander
Download or read book Catalytic Hydrogenation over Platinum Metals written by Paul Rylander and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catalytic Hydrogenation over Platinum Metals focuses on catalytic hydrogenation as an effective process in attaining controlled transformations of organic compounds. Composed of contributions of various authors, the book first provides information on catalysts, equipment, and conditions. Catalyst stability and reuse; types of catalyst; platinum metals; and synergism are covered. The text proceeds with discussions on hydrogenation reactors. Topics include atmospheric pressure reactors; low pressure reactors; microreactors; and high pressure reactors. The book also covers hydrogenation of carbon-carbon unsaturation. Catalytic metal; modified catalyst systems; stereochemistry; diacetylenes; and hydrogenolysis are discussed. The text also looks at the hydrogenation of aromatics, nitrogen and carbonyl compounds, and hydrogenolysis. Numerical representations and analysis, diagrams, and reactions of compounds when exposed to different laboratory conditions are considered. The selection is a great source of data for readers interested in studying the process of catalytic hydrogenation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume II/17d2 is the second part of the fourth subvolume of a supplement to the previous compilations II/1 and II/9a-d on magnetic properties of free radicals, published in 1965 and 1977-1980, which covered the literature up to 1975. Due to the continuing rapid development of the field and the inclusion of new subjects, the supplement covering the period 1975-1985 had to be split into several subvolumes which appear in fast succession. Together with the earlier volumes, II/17 offers an up-to-date and comprehensive survey and a collection of data on important chemical intermediates. The series started with subvolume II/17a, which treats inorganic radicals and radical ions as well as radicals in metal complexes. Subvolume II/17b deals with nonconjugated carbon radicals. Subvolume II/17c covers conjugated carbon-centered and nitrogen radicals. Subvolumes II/17e and II/17f which appeared at the end of 1987, are concerned with radicals centered on heteroatoms with Z>7 and selected anion radicals. Subvolumes II/17d1 (December 1988) and II/17d2 (presented herewith) treat nitroxide radicals.
