Tom Cotter bought his first barn find some 50 years ago and has never looked back. Over the proceeding decades, he has continued to unearth automotive gems, some of which reside in his garage and others found just for the pleasure of the hunt. Tom's passion for automotive archaeology has made him a nexus for other barn finders, whose stories he has collected for more than 20 years. He’s further expanded the scope of his passion as host for The Barn Find Hunter, a Hagertys-sponsored webcast with over 20 episodes now available. Tom Cotter's Best Barn-Find Collector Car Talespulls together the very best stories from Cotter’s previous books and adds several new tales, all of which are presented in this handsome hardcover edition. From Shelby Cobras, to classic Duesenbergs, to Harley hoards and lost supercars, Cotter brings to light the most amazing, outrageous, and unexpected finds he and his barn-finding brethren have discovered.

Book Synopsis Why Dogs Chase Cars by : George Singleton
Download or read book Why Dogs Chase Cars written by George Singleton and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2004-09-17 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These fourteen funny stories tell the tale of a beleaguered boyhood down home where the dogs still run loose. As a boy growing up in the tiny backwater town of Forty-Five, South Carolina (where everybody is pretty much one beer short of a six-pack), all Mendal Dawes wants is out. It's not just his hometown that's hopeless. Mendal's father is just as bad. Embarrassing his son to death nearly every day, Mr. Dawes is a parenting guide's bad example. He buries stuff in the backyard—fake toxic barrels, imitation Burma Shave signs (BIRD ON A WIRE, BIRD ON A PERCH, FLY TOWARD HEAVEN, FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH), yardstick collections. He calls Mendal "Fuzznuts" and makes him recite Marx and Durkheim daily and befriend a classmate rumored to have head lice. Mendal Dawes is a boy itching to get out of town, to take the high road and leave the South and his dingbat dad far behind—just like those car-chasing dogs. But bottom line, this funky, sometimes outrageous, and always very human tale is really about how Mendal discovers that neither he nor the dogs actually want to catch a ride, that the hand that has fed them has a lot more to offer. On the way to watching that light dawn, we also get to watch the Dawes's precarious relationship with a place whose "gene pool [is] so shallow that it wouldn't take a Dr. Scholl's insert to keep one's soles dry." To be consistently funny is a great gift. To be funny and cynical and empathetic all at the same time is George Singleton's special gift, put brilliantly into play in this new collection.

Book Synopsis Fairy Tales, Fables & Yarns For All Ages by : Robert Lee
Download or read book Fairy Tales, Fables & Yarns For All Ages written by Robert Lee and published by Robert Lee. This book was released on with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairy tales are escapes into wondrous worlds. It is only our inflexible adult reasoning that tells us that they are just for children. Fables, too, are disdainfully disregarded by grown-ups, in spite of the valuable life lessons that they often provide. It is only yarns and tall tales that are permitted to dwell in the structured world of the adult. I have compiled this collection of silly, inconsequential stories and poems to satisfy the child in any of us that has been handicapped by active imagination, and has been unable to fully embrace the responsible, pedantic adult world. A few of these little stories were written for my children, as they journeyed from childhood, to adolescence to adulthood. I hope that the tales have allowed them to avoid becoming staid grownups. A few of these yarns were written for staid adults. I am glad to say that they, for a few moments anyway, were able to become irresponsible children again. A couple – specifically, the romantic poems – were written for my wife, who I hope will not be terribly upset that I have shared private thoughts with the world. Many were written just for me. No reason, other than that I like being a perpetual child. For those of you who dare to explore wondrous worlds, even if you do so in the secrecy of your own hidden sanctums, I welcome you to my haven. Please enjoy, and thank you
Book Synopsis Strange But True Tales of Car Collecting by : Keith Martin
Download or read book Strange But True Tales of Car Collecting written by Keith Martin and published by Quarto Publishing Group USA. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These bizarre true stories of collectors and their cars is "a whole lot of fun" (The Virginian Pilot). Have you heard of the fellow who squirrelled away dozens of Chevelles, Camaros, and other classic muscle cars in semi-trailers? How about the president of Shakespeare fishing rods, who sold thirty Bugattis for a mere $85,000? What about the English nobleman who cut up and buried his Ferrari hoard in an elaborate insurance scam? Or how about the Duesenberg abandoned in a Manhattan parking garage for decades only to be uncovered by Jay Leno? Most car collectors exhibit a healthy enthusiasm for their hobby by digging into their favorite marques, chasing parts, swapping stories, and generally living the car-guy lifestyle. Some, however, step over that fine line between enthusiasm and obsession—and that's where these legendary car-collector stories come from. In Strange but True Tales of Car Collecting, Keith Martin and the staff of Sports Car Market Magazine recount the wildest, most eccentric, over-the-top stories of collectors and their collections. "This likable book serves as a ‚ÄòRipley's Believe It or Not!' for car obsessives." —The New York Times

This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liaozhai Zhiyi (Liaozhai; Chinese: 聊齋, or 聊齋誌異), called in English Strange Tales from a Chinese Lonely Studio is a collection of Classical Chinese stories by Pu Songling comprising close to five hundred "marvel tales" in the zhiguai and chuanqi styles which serve to implicitly criticise societal issues then. Dating back to the Qing dynasty, its earliest publication date is given as 1740. Since then, many of the critically lauded stories have been adapted for other media such as film and television. The main characters of this book apparently are ghosts, foxes, immortals and demons, but the author focused on the everyday life of commoners. He used the supernatural and the unexplainable to illustrate his ideas of society and government. He criticized the corruption and injustice in society and sympathized with the poor. The book is complete translation of all volumes (Vol. 1 to 12) of Liaozhai.

Download or read book The Sanford Tales written by Wm. J. Green and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I interviewed for the job, Keith Beal, the Research and Development Director, and my immediate supervisor, gave me a tour of the manufacturing area and made it a point to stop at a small table. There were about three or four assemblers at the table manually placing Sharpie “reservoirs” into Sharpie “barrels”, fitting the “ferrule” (top half of the pen) into place, spin welding the assembly, adding the ink with a foot-operated syringe, setting the tip and cap in place, and then placing the finished marker in a box that was partitioned to hold twelve rows of twelve—one gross of product. “This,” Keith told me, “Is the Sharpie Marker.” All Bill wanted as he interviewed for the job of chemist at Sanford Ink Company in Bellwood, Illinois was a way to support his young family. He could worry about making his mark in the world after his family had a place to sleep, a used car to drive, and food in the refrigerator. Furniture for the apartment could come later. What happened next is today a piece of Americana.
Book Synopsis Tales of Two Cities by : John Freeman
Download or read book Tales of Two Cities written by John Freeman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty major contemporary writers examine life in a deeply divided New York In a city where the top one percent earns more than a half-million dollars per year while twenty-five thousand children are homeless, public discourse about our entrenched and worsening wealth gap has never been more sorely needed. This remarkable anthology is the literary world’s response, with leading lights including Zadie Smith, Junot Díaz, and Lydia Davis bearing witness to the experience of ordinary New Yorkers in extraordinarily unequal circumstances. Through fiction and reportage, these writers convey the indignities and heartbreak, the callousness and solidarities, of living side by side with people of starkly different means. They shed light on the subterranean lives of homeless people who must find a bed in the city’s tunnels; the stresses that gentrification can bring to neighbors in a Brooklyn apartment block; the shenanigans of seriously alienated night-shift paralegals; the trials of a housing defendant standing up for tenants’ rights; and the humanity that survives in the midst of a deeply divided city. Tales of Two Cities is a brilliant, moving, and ultimately galvanizing clarion call for a city—and a nation—in crisis.
