Book excerpt: This paper summarizes the ongoing studies on the possibilities for transport and RF capture of laser-accelerated proton beams in conventional accelerator structures. First results on the capture of laser-accelerated proton beams are presented, supported by Trace3D, CST particle studio and Warp simulations. Based on these results, the development of the pulsed high-field solenoid is guided by our desire to optimize the output particle number for this highly divergent beam with an exponential energy spectrum. A future experimental test stand is proposed to do studies concerning the application as a new particle source.

Book excerpt: This thesis establishes an exciting new beginning for Laser Plasma Accelerators (LPAs) to further develop toward the next generation of compact high energy accelerators. Design, installation and commissioning of a new experimental setup at LBNL played an important role and are detailed through three critical components: e-beam production, reflection of laser pulses with a plasma mirror and large wake excitation below electron injection threshold. Pulses from a 40 TW peak power laser system were split into a 25 TW pulse and a 15 TW pulse. The first pulse was used for e-beam production in the first module and the second pulse was used for wake excitation in the second module to post-accelerate the e-beam. As a result, reliable e-beam production and efficient wake excitation necessary for the staged acceleration were independently demonstrated. These experiments have laid the foundation for future staging experiments at the 40 TW peak power level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capture of laser-accelerated proton beams accompanied by co-moving electrons via a solenoid field has been studied with particle-in-cell simulations. The main advantages of the Warp simulation suite that was used, relative to envelope or tracking codes, are the possibility of including all source parameters energy resolved, adding electrons as second species and considering the non-negligible space-charge forces and electrostatic self-fields. It was observed that the influence of the electrons is of vital importance. The magnetic effect on the electrons out balances the space-charge force. Hence, the electrons are forced onto the beam axis and attract protons. Besides the energy dependent proton density increase on axis, the change in the particle spectrum is also important for future applications. Protons are accelerated/decelerated slightly, electrons highly. 2/3 of all electrons get lost directly at the source and 27% of all protons hit the inner wall of the solenoid.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to accelerate charged particles, electric fields have to be applied. The highest electric fields reached in radio frequency particle accelerators are of the order of 10 MV/m. This field poses an upper limit for conventional accelerator technology because for higher fields the electrodes will be ionized. What if this limit is circumvented and the electric field is build up in an already ionized medium? The idea of using laser generated plasmas for particle acceleration has been conceived about 25 years ago, and is currently a very active and fascinating subject in theoretical and experimental physics. In a plasma the maximum attainable electric fields are of the order of 1000 GV/m, five orders of magnitude larger than for RF accelerators. The dimensions to generate high energy particles shrink from kilometers to millimeters. Therefore, laser plasma acceleration may become an attractive future option for particle acceleration. In this work experimental contributions to the generation of particle beams from laser plasmas are presented. Electron beams with improved parameters, and the first quasi monoenergetic proton beams have been generated and investigated utilizing a compact table top laser system at the Jena laser facility. These experiments are described and discussed in this book.

Book excerpt: This thesis reports on investigations of proton acceleration driven by the interaction of short, intense laser pulses with thin, solid targets. Laser-driven plasma interactions are used to establish accelerating quasi-electrostatic field gradients, on the rear surface of the target, that are orders of magnitude higher than the current limit of conventional, radio-frequency-based accelerator technology. The resulting high energy (multi-MeV) proton beams are highly laminar, have ultra-low emittance, and the inherently broad energy spectrum is particularly effective for use in proton imaging, heating and transmutation applications. This thesis reports on a series of investigations carried out to explore routes towards control of the spectral properties of laser-driven proton sources and optimisation of laser-to-proton energy conversion efficiency. The dependence of laser accelerated proton beam properties on laser energy and focal spot size in the interaction of an intense laser pulse with an ultra-thin foil is explored at laser intensities of 1016-1018 W/cm2. The results indicate that whilst the maximum proton energy is dependent on both these laser pulse parameters, the total number of protons accelerated is primarily related to the laser pulse energy. A modification to current analytical models of the proton acceleration, to take account of lateral transport of electrons on the target rear surface, is suggested to account for the experimental findings. The thesis also reports on an investigation of optical control of laser-driven proton acceleration, in which two relativistically intense laser pulses, narrowly separated in time, are used. This novel approach is shown to deliver a significant enhancement in the coupling of laser energy to medium energy (5-30 MeV) protons, compared to single pulse irradiation. The 'double-pulse' mechanism of proton acceleration is investigated in combination with thin targets, for which refluxing of hot electrons between the target surfaces can lead to optimal conditions for coupling laser drive energy into the proton beam. A high laser-to-proton conversion efficiency is measured when the delay between the pulses is optimised at 1 ps. The subsequent effect of double-pulse drive on the angular distribution of the proton beam is also explored for thick targets.

Book excerpt: With the rapid development of laser systems, plasma-based laser-driven ion acceleration has drawn increasing attention these years. In this book, one of the most efficient and promising ion acceleration mechanisms, so-called radiation pressure acceleration or light-sail regime is re-visited and studied in detail by theoretical analysis and multi-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Based on a simple "flying plasma mirror" model, accurate scaling laws of the final ion energy, velocity, momentum, and energy coupling efficiency in the light-sail regime have been derived. For smooth proton acceleration, a shaped foil target or a density-modulated foil target is suggested to overcome the foil deformation when a transversely Gaussian laser pulse irradiates the foil. GeV proton beams can be generated with a well-defined quasi-monoenergetic feature in the energy spectrum. For stable proton acceleration in the light-sail regime, a two-ion-species shaped foil target is proposed and demonstrated by a series of PIC simulations. Hard X-ray gernation and attosecond electron beams are also stuided and verified in the light-sail regime.

The system includes an accelerator for producing an H.sup.- beam and a laser source for generating a laser beam. A photodetachment module is located proximate the periphery of the accelerator. The photodetachment module combines the H.sup.- beam and laser beam to produce a neutral beam therefrom within a subsection of the H.sup.- beam. The photodetachment module emits the neutral beam along a trajectory defined by the laser beam. The photodetachment module includes a stripping foil which forms a proton beam from the neutral beam. The proton beam is delivered to a conveyance segment which transports the proton beam to a patient treatment station. The photodetachment module further includes a laser scanner which moves the laser beam along a path transverse to the cross-section of the H.sup.- beam in order to form the neutral beam in subsections of the H.sup.- beam. As the scanning laser moves across the H.sup.- beam, it similarly varies the trajectory of the proton beam emitted from the photodetachment module and in turn varies the target location of the proton beam upon the patient. Intensity modulation of the proton beam can also be achieved by controlling the output of the laser.
