Book excerpt: Richard Ingle (1609-1653) was an English colonial seaman and tobacco trader in the American colonies who took over the government of the colony of Maryland in 1645. Most of his background is unknown. He became a trader and ship captain. He transported goods of Maryland traders from England and back and became prominent tobacco trader. When the English Civil War broke out, Ingle sided with the Puritans. He fell out with the catholic leaders of Maryland and then the royalist governor seized his ship, he escaped. He returned in 1645 with the ship Reformation, and attacked the Maryland colony in the name of Parliament. He sailed, attacked the settlement of St. Mary's and imprisoned leaders of the colony. He took control of the Maryland government. Under his leadership, his men looted property of wealthy Roman Catholic settlers. Ingle claimed that he had letter of marque to cruise in the waters of Shesapeake and the permission of a new government in England. Local settlers regarded him as a pirate.

Book Synopsis The English Atlantic in an Age of Revolution, 1640-1661 by : Carla Gardina Pestana
Download or read book The English Atlantic in an Age of Revolution, 1640-1661 written by Carla Gardina Pestana and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1640 and 1660, England, Scotland, and Ireland faced civil war, invasion, religious radicalism, parliamentary rule, and the restoration of the monarchy. Carla Gardina Pestana offers a sweeping history that systematically connects these cataclysmic events and the development of the infant plantations from Newfoundland to Surinam. By 1660, the English Atlantic emerged as religiously polarized, economically interconnected, socially exploitative, and ideologically anxious about its liberties. War increased both the proportion of unfree laborers and ethnic diversity in the settlements. Neglected by London, the colonies quickly developed trade networks, especially from seafaring New England, and entered the slave trade. Barbadian planters in particular moved decisively toward slavery as their premier labor system, leading the way toward its adoption elsewhere. When by the 1650s the governing authorities tried to impose their vision of an integrated empire, the colonists claimed the rights of freeborn English men, making a bid for liberties that had enormous implications for the rise in both involuntary servitude and slavery. Changes at home politicized religion in the Atlantic world and introduced witchcraft prosecutions. Pestana presents a compelling case for rethinking our assumptions about empire and colonialism and offers an invaluable look at the creation of the English Atlantic world.

Book excerpt: Book Excerpt: ...March 16th, Lewger showed that "whereas Richard Ingle was obnoxious to divers suits & complaints of his Lo^p for divers and sundry crimes all w^ch upon composition for the publique good & safety were suspended ag^st the said Richard Ingle assuming to leave in the country to the publique need at this time," powder and shot, but he had not paid the composition and had left without paying custom dues, which were required for the proper discharge of his ship "by the law & custom of all Ports," he prayed that all of Ingle's goods, debts, &c., might be sequestered until he should clear himself.[22] Under the circumstances, the grave charges pending against him, as there is no proof that he had known the terms of composition, a crew and vessel being at his command, it is not surprising that he sailed away from danger, without attending to the formality of clearing, and leaving unpaid debts, for Lewger claimed 600 pounds of tobacco from him, as payment for some plate and a scimitar, for which Cornwall...

Book Synopsis Fur, Fashion and Transatlantic Trade During the Seventeenth Century by : John C. Appleby
Download or read book Fur, Fashion and Transatlantic Trade During the Seventeenth Century written by John C. Appleby and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2021 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the development of the fur trade in Chesapeake Bay during the seventeenth century, and the wide-ranging links that were formed in a new and extensive transatlantic chain of supply and consumption. It considers changing fashion in England, the growing demand for fur, at a time when the Russian fur trade was in decline, examines native North Americans and their trading and other exchanges with colonists, and explores the nature of colonial society, including the commercial ambitions of a varied range of investors. As such, it outlines the intense rivalry which existed between different colonies and colonial interests. Although the book argues that fur never supplanted tobacco as the region's principal export, noting that the trade declined as new, more profitable sources of supply were opened up, nevertheless the case of the Chesapeake fur trade provides an excellent example of how different elements in a new transatlantic enterprise fitted together and had a profound impact on each other.
