Book excerpt: Excerpt from Captain Brassbound's Conversion: A Play of Adventure On the heights overlooking the harbor of Mogador, a seaport on the west coast of Morocco, the missionary, in the coolness of the late afternoon, is following the precept of Voltaire by cultivating his garden. He is an elderly Scotchman, spiritually u little weatherbeaten, as having to navigate his creed in strange waters crowded with other craft, but still a convinced son of the Free Church and the North African Mission, with a faithful browm eye, and a peaceful soul. Physically a wiry small-knit man, well tanned, clean shaven, with delicate resolute features and a twinkle of mild humor. He wears the sun helmet and pagri, the neutral-tinted spectacles, and the white canvas Spanish sand shoes of the modem Scotch missionary; but instead of a cheap tourist's suit from Glasgow, a grey flannel shirt with white collar, a green sailor knot tie with a cheap pin in it, he wears a suit of clean white linen, acceptable in color, if not in cut, to the Moorish mind. The view from the garden includes much Atlantic Ocean and a long stretch of sandy coast to the south, swept by the north east trade wind, and scantily nourishing a few stunted pepper trees, mangy palms, and tamarisks. The prospect ends, as far as the land is concerned, in little hills that come nearly to the sea: rudiments, these, of the Atlas Mountains. The missionary, having had daily opportunities of looking at this seascape for thirty years or so, pays no heed to it, being absorbed in trimming a huge red geranium bush, to English eyes unnaturally big, which, with a dusty smilax or two, is the sole product of his pet flower-bed. Book excerpt: "Captain Brassbound's Conversion" by George Bernard Shaw is a thought-provoking play that delves into themes of morality, redemption, and the clash of cultures. Set in North Africa, the play follows the adventures of Captain Brassbound, a rugged and pragmatic sea captain, as he navigates the complexities of honor, justice, and personal transformation. At the center of the story is Lady Cicely Waynflete, a spirited Englishwoman who becomes embroiled in a dangerous conflict in the desert. When her life is threatened by tribal chieftain Sheik Sidi El Assif, Captain Brassbound comes to her rescue, albeit with his own motives in mind. As the drama unfolds, the characters grapple with questions of loyalty, revenge, and the possibility of change. Shaw uses sharp dialogue and biting wit to explore the clash between Western ideals and Eastern traditions, challenging audience members to reconsider their preconceived notions of morality and justice. Through the character of Captain Brassbound, Shaw raises questions about the nature of heroism, the power of empathy, and the potential for personal growth even in the most unlikely circumstances.

But he also recognized that people wanted to be entertained while educated, and to see purpose mixed with pleasure. In these three plays of ideas, Shaw employed traditional dramatic forms - Victorian melodrama, the history play and the adventure story - to turn received wisdom upside down. Set during the American War of Independence, The Devil's Disciple exposes fake Puritanism and piety, while Caesar and Cleopatra, a cheeky riposte to Shakespeare, redefines heroism in the character of the ageing Roman leader. And in Captain Brassbound's Conversion, an expedition in Morocco is saved from disaster by a lady explorer's skilful manipulation of the truth.
