Book excerpt: How the valorization of artistic and political dissidence has contributed to the rise of Chinese contemporary art in the West. Interest in Chinese contemporary art increased dramatically in the West shortly after the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. Sparked by political sympathy and the mediatized response to the event, Western curators, critics, and art historians were quick to view the new art as an expression of dissident resistance to the Chinese regime. In this book, Marie Leduc proposes that this attribution of political dissidence is not only the result of latent Cold War perceptions about China, but also indicative of the art world's demand for artistically and politically provocative work—a demand that mirrors the valorization of free expression in liberal democracies. Focusing on nine Chinese artists—Wang Du, Wang Keping, Huang Yong Ping, Yang Jiechang, Chen Zhen, Yan Pei-Ming, Shen Yuan, Ru Xiaofan, and Du Zhenjun—who migrated to Paris in and around 1989, Leduc explores how their work was recognized before and after the Tiananmen Square incident. Drawing on personal interviews with the artists and curators, and through an analysis of important exhibitions, events, reviews, and curatorial texts, she demonstrates how these and other Chinese artists have been celebrated both for their artistic dissidence—their formal innovations and introduction of new media and concepts—and for their political dissidence—how their work challenges political values in both China and the West. As Leduc concludes, the rise of Chinese contemporary art in the West highlights the significance of artistic and political dissidence in the production of contemporary art, and the often-unrecognized relationship between contemporary art and liberal democracy.

Book excerpt: A firsthand account of the life and work of Barbara T. Smith, one of the most important yet underrecognized performance artists in the United States. For over fifty years, Barbara T. Smith has been at the forefront of artistic movements in California. Her work across many mediums explores concepts that strike at the core of human nature, including sexuality, physical and spiritual sustenance, technology, and death. In this memoir, Smith weaves together descriptive accounts of her pioneering performances with an intimate narrative of her life. The Way to Be covers the years 1931 to 1981, up to the artist’s fiftieth birthday, resulting in an exhaustive catalogue of her early work. It reveals the personal stories and events behind her pieces and the challenges she faced in an art world dominated by sexism and machismo. Drawing on Smith’s archive at the Getty Research Institute, this enthralling book presents previously unpublished notes, documents, photographs, and firsthand accounts of her life and practice, as well as her more recent reflections on the past. The Way to Be demonstrates Smith’s lasting contributions to the field of contemporary art and provides an engaging commentary on a recent period of great cultural and political change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his third book, Strauss delves into the mysterious process whereby an idea is born in the mind and materialized through the hand in the expression of an artwork. How exactly does this happen? It's a question so basic, an act so fundamental to art-making, that it has rarely received attention. It makes an ideal topic for Strauss, a writer with an exceptional ability to animate art's philosophical dimensions in a clear, persuasive manner. During this time when craft and the direct manipulation of materials by the artist appear to be in eclipse, Strauss comes to their defense in a spirited cri de coeur. Featuring over 35 illustrations, the book examines a wide variety of media and individual examples. It explores the works of sculptors Martin Puryear, Ursula von Rydingsvard, and Donald Lipski; painters Leon Golub and Ron Gorchov; and writers Robert Duncan, Robert Kelly, Guy Davenport, John Berger, and Leo Steinberg. In addition, there are essays on Joseph Beuys's 7000 Oaks in Ireland, contemporary Haida carvers Reg Davidson and Jim Hart, Cecilia Vicuña's "memory of the fingers," and the influence of curators Harald Szeemann and Walter Hopps on the staging of contemporary art exhibitions. Known primarily for his writings on photography and politics, Strauss here focuses on the least mediated arts--painting, sculpture, and writing. His claims are supported by a series of close readings which succeed in recovering the immediacy of the hand and revitalizing contemporary art's connection to the past.

Book excerpt: "This full-color catalog designed by Gail Swanlund for the exhibition George Stone - Probabilities - a Twenty-Year Survey, at the Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Art Park, focuses on the installation work of Los Angeles artist George Stone. His extensive use of discarded technologies found in surplus yards that are then re-engineered to represent complex wired-era metaphors make him a true pioneer in the expansion of our sculptural vocabulary. Probabilities - the first survey of Stone's work includes writings by leading essayists Norman M. Klein, Peter Lunenfeld, Judith E. Vida, M.D., and Ralph Rugoff."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the disciplines of critical education and cultural studies have traditionally occupied separate spaces as they have addressed different audiences, their concerns as well as the political and pedagogical nature of their work overlap. Education and Cultural Studies brings members of these two groups together to demonstrate how a critical understanding of culture and education can transgressively implement broad political change. All written from within this framework of cultural studies and critical pedagogy, the contributors illuminate the possibilities and opportunities open to practicing educators. In eschewing a romantic utopianism, and in assessing the current climate of what is attainable and practical, this book teaches us how we can begin to translate and perhaps even transform the vexing social problems that confront us daily. Contributors include Carol Becker, Harvey J. Kaye, David Theo Goldberg, Jeffrey Williams, Sharon Todd, Douglas Kellner, Deborah Britzman, Jacqueline Reid-Walsh, Claudia Mitchell, Cameron McCarthy, Mike Hill, Susan Searls, Stanley Aronowitz, Douglas Noble, Kakie Urch, Henry Giroux, David Trend, and Robert Mikilitsch.

Book excerpt: In 1985, winemaker Joe Benziger and Sonoma artist Bob Nugent struck on the idea of putting original art on special releases of Imagery Estate wines. The goal was straight-forward: commission the world's modern art luminaries to create works for reproduction onto wine labels. Two decades and 160 labels later, they have assembled a staggering collection of contemporary art, from the likes of Sol Lewitt, Terry Winters, Nancy Graves, John Baldessari, Judy Pfaff, and Bob Arneson. This book highlights 133 works of art, the best of the Imagery collection. The images are big and lush, and accompanied by biographical sketches of the artists' careers, as well as a short description of their individual ideas and methods. The pictorial index shows the works in their label-form, from 1985 to the most recent vintages. These images are evocations of wine's multi-faceted ability to inspire us.
