Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to determine how capital expenditure decisions are made in manufacturing firms of various sizes in Canada and the United States. The study attempts to describe the policies, practices, and procedures related to capital expenditure decisions, emphasizing the role of the accountant and the use of financial information. More specifically, two major aspects of capital expenditure decision making, capital expenditure planning and financial appraisal of individual projects are examined. Also included is a description of the management process for developing, selecting, and implementing capital investment proposals. Further, the study identifies and describes the various techniques used in the financial appraisal of investment proposals and examines the concepts and methods used in measuring the investment required by a specific project and the economic benefits that it will bring. Sixteen American firms and eight Canadian firms from the following industries were studied: oil refining, chemical manufacturing, paper and pulp, steel milling and fabrication, heavy equipment, textiles, food processsing and electronic and information technology.

Book excerpt: Any book on planning has to be easy to read and full of examples on how to do it with forms and illustrations. That is exactly what this book is and why it is called a “guidebook”. The fact that most people do not plan well is well documented by the demographics of the population and the economic situation that a growing senior population is faced with now due to poor planning or no planning earlier in their lives. Since company’s are run by people they exhibit the idiosyncrasies of the people who run them. Many company’s do not have strategic plans or operating plans. Some firms do not even have a budget and operate on a day-by-day basis. The obvious result of this is crisis management, cash flow problems and the constant risk of going out of business. Many company’s both large and small have disappeared due to the lack of a plan and this has been well documented in the business press. Managers do not have a plan for their business because they do not have a plan for themselves. Planning is not something that we are born with a natural ability to do well, or in many cases - at all. Planning is a learned skill and their is a need for simple step-by-step guides which is what this book is about. It has been written as a result of years of experience that the author has had working with hundreds of company’s. The foundation for the book is a process that the author calls the “Plan-for-Planning” - a five step exercise that he has used to help managers build business plans for their company’s. It is a proven formula that has resulted in increased profitability, operational efficiencies and the optimization of the overall allocation of resources for the author’s clients. It also has been the basis for the development of executive level seminars by the author that have been promoted and implemented by BUSINESS WEEK and Inc. Magazine domestically, and Frost & Sullivan internationally. The initial publication of this book was by Inc. as a result of the success of the seminar series for their audience - growing firms. Articles have been written about the Plan-for-Planning process and it has been instrumental in the development of business plans that have resulted in company’s being sold for a premium to the shareholders as a result of the quality of the business planning process. The book has been used by many managers and in some cases continues to be a reference guide for the new businesses that they have become involved with. It is really an easy to use guide for developing a business/strategic plan for any business.

Book excerpt: This new edition of Profit Planning is ideal for hotel, restaurant and licensed house managers as it focuses on profit planning, the major area of finance which the general manager needs to get to grips with. The practical aspects of day-to-day profit planning are emphasized, which means that the reader can understand the approach with the minimum of theory and technical jargon. The examples and illustrations used can easily be translated into all aspects of the hospitality industry, so this book has a wide appeal. Unit managers now have high levels of finance responsibility at an early stage in their career. This reflects the growth in strongly branded and market oriented chains of pubs and restaurants which need to achieve swift returns on their investments. The financial management skills expected of unit managers are therefore growing in sophistication and this new edition takes full account of this.

Book excerpt: Traditionally, economics training in public finances has focused more on tax than public expenditure issues, and within expenditure, more on policy considerations than the more mundane matters of public expenditure management. For many years, the IMF's Public Expenditure Management Division has answered specific questions raised by fiscal economists on such missions. Based on this experience, these guidelines arose from the need to provide a general overview of the principles and practices observed in three key aspects of public expenditure management: budget preparation, budget execution, and cash planning. For each aspect of public expenditure management, the guidelines identify separately the differing practices in four groups of countries - the francophone systems, the Commonwealth systems, Latin America, and those in the transition economies. Edited by Barry H. Potter and Jack Diamond, this publication is intended for a general fiscal, or a general budget, advisor interested in the macroeconomic dimension of public expenditure management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978. The type of firm focused upon in this study is the large manager-controlled business organisation, although the analysis is not restricted to this kind of entity, as firms of all shapes and sizes are finding it increasingly necessary to plan, particularly in environments characterised by rapid innovation and technological change. After an initial survey of various growth theories, the book analyses the vehicles of growth as well as the constraints, so that the process of growth is seen in the context of corporate planning and also within the context of planning in the economy as a whole. Some of the more important contributions to the economic theory of business behaviour are brought together and the implications of these works for micro-economic theory and managerial economics are determined. Particular emphasis is placed upon Marris’s growth model, and the theme of balanced growth – through the analysis of the diversification and financial aspects of planning – is developed. The planning process is also discussed within the public sector and selected case studies of local authority defence and health planning are examined.

Book excerpt: Author of cult classics The Pumpkin Plan and The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur offers a simple, counterintuitive cash management solution that will help small businesses break out of the doom spiral and achieve instant profitability. Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: Sales - Expenses = Profit. The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows. Using Michalowicz's Profit First system, readers will learn that: · Following 4 simple principles can simplify accounting and make it easier to manage a profitable business by looking at bank account balances. · A small, profitable business can be worth much more than a large business surviving on its top line. · Businesses that attain early and sustained profitability have a better shot at achieving long-term growth. With dozens of case studies, practical, step-by-step advice, and his signature sense of humor, Michalowicz has the game-changing roadmap for any entrepreneur to make money they always dreamed of.
