Book excerpt: Capillary phenomena occur in both natural and human-made systems, from equilibria in the presence of solids (grains, walls, metal wires) to multiphase flows in heterogeneous and fractured porous media. This book, composed of two volumes, develops fluid mechanics approaches for two immiscible fluids (water/air or water/oil) in the presence of solids (tubes, joints, grains, porous media). Their hydrodynamics are typically dominated by capillarity and viscous dissipation. This first volume presents the basic concepts and investigates two-phase equilibria, before analyzing two-phase hydrodynamics in discrete and/or statistical systems (tubular pores, planar joints). It then studies flows in heterogeneous and stratified porous media, such as soils and rocks, based on Darcy’s law. This analysis includes unsaturated flow (Richards equation) and two-phase flow (Muskat equations). Overall, the two volumes contain basic physical concepts, theoretical analyses, field investigations and statistical and numerical approaches to capillary-driven equilibria and flows in heterogeneous systems

Book excerpt: Requiring only an introductory background in continuum mechanics, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and solid mechanics, Biofluid Dynamics: Principles and Selected Applications contains review, methodology, and application chapters to build a solid understanding of medical implants and devices. For additional assistance, it includes a glossary of biological terms, many figures illustrating theoretical concepts, numerous solved sample problems, and mathematical appendices. The text is geared toward seniors and first-year graduate students in engineering and physics as well as professionals in medicine and medical implant/device industries. It can be used as a primary selection for a comprehensive course or for a two-course sequence. The book has two main parts: theory, comprising the first two chapters; and applications, constituting the remainder of the book. Specifically, the author reviews the fundamentals of physical and related biological transport phenomena, such as mass, momentum, and heat transfer in biomedical systems, and highlights complementary topics such as two-phase flow, biomechanics, and fluid-structure interaction. Two appendices summarize needed elements of engineering mathematics and CFD software applications, and these are also found in the fifth chapter. The application part, in form of project analyses, focuses on the cardiovascular system with common arterial diseases, organ systems, targeted drug delivery, and stent-graft implants. Armed with Biofluid Dynamics, students will be ready to solve basic biofluids-related problems, gain new physical insight, and analyze biofluid dynamics aspects of biomedical systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the behavior of fluids in a low-gravity environment (e.g. spacecraft) with special emphasis on application in PMD (propellant management device) systems. Since PMD designs are not testable on ground and thus completely rely on analytical or numerical concepts, this book treats three different flow problems with analytical, numerical and experimental means. These problems are linked together by the same set of equations and boundary conditions.

Book excerpt: This volume contains an archival record of the NATO Advanced Institute on Microscale Heat Transfer – Fundamental and Applications in Biological and Microelectromechanical Systems held in Çesme – Izmir, Turkey, July 18–30, 2004. The ASIs are intended to be high-level teaching activity in scientific and technical areas of current concern. In this volume, the reader may find interesting chapters and various Microscale Heat Transfer Fundamental and Applications. The growing use of electronics, in both military and civilian applications has led to the widespread recognition for need of thermal packaging and management. The use of higher densities and frequencies in microelectronic circuits for computers are increasing day by day. They require effective cooling due to heat generated that is to be dissipated from a relatively low surface area. Hence, the development of efficient cooling techniques for integrated circuit chips is one of the important contemporary applications of Microscale Heat Transfer which has received much attention for cooling of high power electronics and applications in biomechanical and aerospace industries. Microelectromechanical systems are subject of increasing active research in a widening field of discipline. These topics and others are the main themeof this Institute.
