Book excerpt: O crescente aumento da substituição da floresta natural por formas alternativas de uso do solo na Amazônia tem gerado implicações ecológicas relacionadas à utilização dos recursos naturais, onde a agricultura e o setor florestal tem feito parte de todo esse processo resultando no declínio da produtividade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as modificações nas propriedades químicas de um Latossolo Amarelo textura média, e diagnosticar as deficiências de nutrientes do milho (Zea mays L.), em uma seqüência de vegetação de floresta secundária e área cultivada com o consórcio cacau, gliricidia, pupunha" localizada no município de Marituba-Pa. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia, usando um delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com arranjo de tratamentos em esquema fatorial 2x10 (dois sistemas de uso do solo - Floresta secundária e Área cultivada com o consórcio cacau x pupunha e gliricidia) e 10 tratamentos fertilizantes (Testemunha; Completo com N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S e micronutrientes; Completo + calagem; omissão de N, P, K, 'Ca, Mg, S e micronutrientes da mistura completa), em 4 repetições. Os resultados demonstraram que houve aumento da produção de massa seca do milho devido à adubação e calagem. Em geral, a produção de massa seca do milho foi maior no solo da área cultivada, quando comparada com solo de floresta secundária. O fósforo, potássio, cálcio e magnésio foram os nutrientes que mais limitaram o crescimento do milho na floresta secundária e P, K, Ca, Mg e S na área cultivada com o consórcio cacau X gliricidia x pu punha. Entretanto, não houve diferenças significativas no crescimento do milho entre os tratamentos com as testemunhas dos dois sistemas de uso do solo, sugerindo que a substituição da capoeira natural pela agricultura não diminuiu a já exaurida capacidade produtiva do solo.
