Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Huge scope - covers all aspects of tender writing for public sector, private sector and research funding * Expert guidance from a specialist who has written over 200 successful tenders and proposals * Highly practical approach - based on examples drawn from actual bids and tenders With more and more corporations opting for "preferred supplier" lists, bids and tenders have become a fact of business life. For the small or medium sized corporation without a specialist bids-and-tenders team, the research unit, or the university team, bid preparation can take great amounts of senior management time. Here's where this book comes in: practical and written in an accessible style, it uses examples and checklists to explain how to create bids that are outstanding in both technical quality and value for money, bids that stand a good chance of being successful. Lewis provides "best-practice" advice on every step in the process, including: Bidding for public sector contracts; tendering for the private sector and for research projects; analyzing client requirements; managing, resourcing and researching the bid; developing and writing the bid; defining outputs and deliverables; communicating added value; describing professional experience; producing and submitting tenders; stating the price; understanding tender evaluation; and making presentations.

Book excerpt: Knowledge is the basic output of the defense technology establishment in the United States; it is what enables the development of weapon systems. From this premise, this volume explores the process of knowledge production in defense technology from the beginnings of the Cold War to the present time. Produced through the process of research and development (R&D), technical knowledge for defense is an economic commodity. It is "fundable" in the sense of having future value. Like other commodities in the futures market, it is purchased before it is produced. But unlike those other commodities, this knowledge is typically produced through the joint efforts of the customer and the vendor. This study highlights two polar aspects of knowledge production: technology development and technology transfer. It centers on the present, shifting concept of defense conversion that is redefining defense technology policy. The book also includes cited documents pertaining to the transactions that engage customers and vendors in the process of knowledge production. The documents constitute a literature of needs and claims, and they reveal two chief properties: problem formulation and tactical positioning. Apart from the substantive yield of these particular documents, the strategy of evidence in this volume has broad implications for further study, suggesting a means of analyzing knowledge production in other large social systems.

Book excerpt: ""In writing an article, a professional writer has a plan before he ever sits down in front of the computer to compose those first words. Chances are he has written an outline -- whether it's a traditional one or a cluster one -- that tells him exactly where he's going with the article. His article's doorways won't collapse."" ""I believe, then, that an outline is necessary to create a well-written article. Whatever type of writer you are -- whether you are a highly-organized one who writes formal, A-B-C-1-2-3 outlines or a let-me-do-my-work-in-my-pajamas writer who utilizes very informal outlines -- an outline will make you better prepared for the task of writing your article."" ""Should you use an outline, then? Yes, because: (1) they keep you organized, (2) they encourage thematic unity, and (3) they can inspire you."" ----Cheryl Sloan Wray
