Book excerpt: Cane Creek Days is the memoir of a boy growing up on a story-book farm near Petersburg, Tennessee, the kind of farming life that no longer exists. The story takes place among the fields and small towns and bridges and dusty roads through which winds the beautiful, life-sustaining stream called the Little Cane Creek. Times were tough for the author, his family, and his friends in this rural Middle Tennessee area, not far from Alabama. Hunting and fishing were more than sport – they provided an important part of living a rich life. Livestock and crops provided cash, but also put food on the table. Their knowledge of the soil, plants, and animals of the region helped these hard-working and intelligent folks stay alive and even thrive in an age of less extravagance and indulgence. Many of these old ways required to survive were common and necessary are in danger of being forgotten. So author Warren Gill shares about growing up in the 1950s and how rural life sustained his community. Gill hopes to preserve for modern readers the lessons he and his community learned and how they survived without the technological tools that modern farms use today. Many North Americans are showing an interest in returning to our agricultural roots, either as working farmers or as hobby farmers who want to keep alive the knowledge of traditional agriculture. Many of these people remember that their parents and grandparents lived hard, fulfilling lives, and they want to recapture and preserve that tradition. This memoir captures that experience from someone who’s lived it.

Book excerpt: The South Carolina backcountry is no place for a young girl to grow up in the 1760s, but sixteen-year-old Emily Stewart wouldn’t have it any other way. She loves the settlement of Ninety Six where her father Breck Stewart runs a tavern with his family, including Emily’s embittered older brother, Donnan. But there’s much to fear, too. Gangs of murderers, thieves, and robbers terrorize the country with impunity. Pleas to the government in Charlestown fall on deaf ears. As the savagery continues, Breck Stewart is finally forced to take a stand, forming a vigilante group called the Cane Creek Regulators. The settlers take the law into their own hands—even though such an act will be considered treason and could land everyone riding with the vigilantes in a colonial prison—or on the gallows.

Book excerpt: An epic story of courage, survival, and tragedy, the Disaster at Cane Creek is the account of the devastating potash mine explosion that occurred August 27, 1963, only hours after a miraculous Sheppton mine rescue in Pennsylvania. Twenty-five miners working the afternoon shift were now caught in a horrific explosion at Texas Gulf Sulphur's new Cane Creek Potash Mine. Located in the scenic red rock canyon country just west of Moab, Utah along the banks of the Colorado River, the mine site quickly became the scene of an intense mine rescue operation. With no knowledge of any survivors, the race against time was set in full motion as expert mine rescue teams battled to overcome smoke, gases, and groundwater pouring down the mine shaft which was as deep as two Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other. Disaster at Cane Creek is thoroughly spellbinding as it shares history's stage during the iconic 1960's with other relevant back and side stories during the Kennedy Administration. Author Kymberly Mele masterfully weaves together this powerful drama, putting the reader on the scene of this true-life story as events unfold. She conveys the essence of the people involved, communicates what they endured, and captures the sheer will, determination and fight for survival that is both riveting and inspirational.

Book excerpt: In the hollows of Lewis County, Tennessee, Mormon missionaries baptized nearly fifty members of a large extended family. But their initial success was marred by false accusations of salacious behavior. A few influential citizens were disturbed by the rumors and by the missionaries' apparent popularity. On August 10th 1884, tensions erupted into violence and bloodshed. Two of the Utah missionaries, two young Tennessean converts, and one vigilante were shot dead. At least one other member of the congregation was wounded and never fully recovered. Much has been written about the two missionaries killed, but the real story is much deeper. Step into the lives of these proud Tennesseans, the earnest converts, the fearsome gunmen, and those stuck in between. See how their families intertwined in the years before and after the shooting. Its a snapshot of post-bellum rural Tennessee you won't soon forget.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cane Creek: Mother of Meetings Cane Creek Friends Meetinghouse Stands just north Of the intersection of the Sylvan School Road and the Greensboro Chapel Hill Highway in southern Alamance County, North Caro lina. It is a place where people gather to worship as they have for more than 240 years. Young and Old alike can find within its walls kindness, love, devotion, and inspiration. This has always been so. It is not much different now than it was when I was a child, growing up in the Cane Creek Meeting. My memories from that time and place to the present form a kaleidoscope of pictures that seem to change, yet forever remain the same. Book excerpt: From the early beginning of Christianity, the command to take the gospel of Jesus Christ to all parts of the world rang loud and clear in the hearts of His followers. In many parts of the world, those proclaming the gospels' good news came under the shadows of ignorance, misunderstandings and misconceptions. Many instances erupted in violence against those carrying the light of truth. This has been the plight of missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, (Mormon) from it's organization in the upper State of New York in 1830. Perhaps the most brutal treatment received by Mormon Missionaries occurred in the American South. Still suffering the indignities of political reconstruction following the Civil War, many seemed unwilling to tolerate any preventable outside influence. On August 10,1884, in Lewis County, Tennessee, such an incident occurred, as a mob posing as the Ku Klux Klan, interrupted a Church meeting and what ensued was perhaps the South's darkest hour. Donald R. Curtis covers this tragedy in its entirety, what lead up to it, the actual tragedy itself, and how it effected the years that followed, and the lives of those left behind.
