Book excerpt: A menacing winter storm is forming in the Atlantic Ocean and Frostfall Island is in its path. Anna St. James and her quirky boarding house family are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. There are candles and flashlights and firewood if the power goes out. As much as Anna dreads a bad storm, she’s looking forward to a few cozy days locked inside with her favorite people and most especially her favorite guy, Nathaniel Maddon. The storm brings ice and wind and utter chaos, but the Moon River boarders are hunkered down and safe. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for everyone on the island. Four women arrived for an ill-timed weekend reunion at one of the island’s top rentals. When one of the women is murdered, Anna is called to sort things out. The storm has cut the island off from outside help, and now there’s a killer on the loose. Book 6 of the Frostfall Island Cozy Mystery series

Download or read book Exhibited by Candlelight written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-05-20 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exhibited by Candlelight: Sources and Developments in the Gothic Tradition focuses on a number of strands in the Gothic. The first is Gothic as a way of looking. Paintings used as reference points, tableaux, or the Hammer Studios' visualizations of Dracula present ways of seeing which are suggestive and allow the interplay of primarily sexual passions. Continuity with the past is a further strand which enables us to explore how the sources of the Gothic are connected with the origin of existence and of history, both individual and general. Here, the Gothic offers a voice for writers whose perceptions do not fit into those of the dominant group, which makes them sensitive both to psychological and social gaps. This leads to an exploration of the very idea of sources and an attempt to bridge the gaps, as can be observed in the variety of epithets used to clarify the ways that Gothic works, ranging from heroic gothic to porno-gothic. This takes the reader to the main core of Gothic: a genre which is always ready to admit new forms of the unreal to enter and change whatever has become mainstream literature, and a way of reading and a mode profoundly affecting the reading experience. The Gothic mode cultivates its wicked ways in literature, working through it as a leavening yeast.

Download or read book Candlelight in a Storm written by Naveen Sridhar and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naveen Sridhar has written a literary love story which is partial memoir, partial biography. Sridhars connection with the subject of the story, his wife Renate, gives a unique perspective about growing up in Germany during WW II and what life was like behind the Berlin Wall. Whilst most books focus on Allied soldiers and their families or the Holocaust, this book focuses on how the German people also suffered during the pivotal and haunting time what life was like for ordinary Germans living the rule of government policies and ideologies in which many could not be trusted. What I specially loved was the glimpse this gave into the unsung heroes the wives and mothers who silently endured the pain and heartbreak of missing loved ones while keeping the country running. Another fascinating part was looking at the difficulties citizens faced when traveling between East and West Germany. Seeing how the country was divided because of a border wall and making enemies out of former neighbors really resonated with topics made instant connections with today's headlines. A careful look will show that modern people deal with the same issues. The lessons of diversity and acceptance, so new to us today, were also challenges for the characters during this time period. A modern reader will have a lot to consider and much to learn from Renates examples. At the end of the day we are all Berliners. Pacific Book Review For anyone thinking of writing this sort of family biography, this is a textbook in how to do it. Stylistically rich both detailed and breezy, with enough dialog due to the strength of his writing and the thoroughness of his research. SPR Review. Erudite without being overbearing a unique, spellbinding biography..both charming and elucidating. IndieReader Review You feel with the flow connect with the pages as you move on true events peered with a beautiful narrative. Ashvamegh Int. J. of English Literature Sridhar has a talent for highlighting the good in these accounts, and he creates a charmed story with continual reinventions. While it’s tough for any single person to emblematize a generation, Candlelight in a Storm is an accomplished tribute to Renate’s confidence, luck, perseverance, and spirit. Clarion Review Effectively portrays the hardships of life shows how the sustained love of two people can surmount any adversity blueink Review Much more than the history of one individual; it is a window to the struggles ordinary Germans faced during the Cold War years. An excellent account as a chronicle of Cold War Germany, Sridhars well-written and informative narrative sheds new light on the often underreported trials of its citizens and foreign residents. Book Synopsis Murder by Candlelight by : Michael Knox Beran
Download or read book Murder by Candlelight written by Michael Knox Beran and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-08-15 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, a series of murders took place in and around London which shocked the whole of England. The appalling nature of the crimes—a brutal slaying in the gambling netherworld, the slaughter of two entire households, and the first of the modern lust-murders—was magnified not only by the lurid atmosphere of an age in which candlelight gave way to gaslight, but also by the efforts of some of the keenest minds of the period to uncover the gruesomest details of the killings. These slayings took place against the backdrop of a London in which the splendor of the fashionable world was haunted by the squalor of the slums. Sir Walter Scott, Lord Byron, Thomas De Quincey, Thomas Carlyle, and Percy Bysshe Shelley and others were fascinated by the blood and deviltry of the macabre. In their contemplations of the most notorious murders of their time, they discerned in the act of killing itself a depth of hideousness that we have lost sight of, now living in an age in which murder has been reduced to a problem of social science and skillful detective work. Interweaving these cultural vignettes alongside criminal history, acclaimed author Michael Beran paints a vivid picture of a time when homicide was thought of as the intrusion of the diabolic into ordinary life.

This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 1046 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 15 Sermons 848-907 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach every one in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to republish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.
