This book was released on 2019-11-24 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oncology careforce faces challenges as population growth in the U.S. contributes to increases in the number of patients diagnosed with cancer. Significant advances in cancer research, screening and diagnostic practices, and treatment have led to the age-adjusted declining mortality rate from cancer. However, as the field continues to develop and advance, cancer care has become more complex than ever before. There is a growing concern regarding the U.S. health care system's capacity to deliver high-quality cancer care to the increasing number of patients. The National Academies convened a workshop on February 11-12, 2019 to explore trends in cancer care and identify opportunities for improvement in the rapidly developing oncology careforce. Discussions at the workshop primarily focused on trends in demographics, the careforce, and oncology practice, as well as implications for the future of cancer care and strategies to improve the organization and delivery of cancer care. Opportunities to change policy and leverage technologies in oncology were also identified. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book excerpt: Susan Wener survived cancer not once, but twice. The first time she followed the traditional route of surgery and chemotherapy. The second she went renegade, stepping out into the field of alternative medicine. This book brings to life a journey of more than 30 years, years filled with joy, as well as incredible physical, psychological, and spiritual challenges. As an educator and therapist who helps individuals cope with life-threatening illness, Wener brings a unique perspective to this story. As both a therapist and a patient, she discovers that what is most successful is medical care that is integrated, taking the whole patient into account, not just the disease in isolation. In prose that is both funny and profoundly moving, Wener takes us on her extraordinary journey to wellness and wisdom. She shares her innermost feelings with honesty, insight, and humor. She reminds us that life is filled with endless possibility, that hope and wishful thinking not only help us keep our heads above water but are essential to our sanity, and that what makes us magic is our ability to pick ourselves up every time we fall.

I arrived at six in the morning and found my way to the new heart center where I was greeted and given a hospital gown to wear. Then I was escorted to the operating room where I lay on a table with at least twenty medical personnel surrounding me. I was prepared for surgery, and all eyes were focused on me. Im the professional actor who was contracted to be the patient on the operating table. The shoot and simulated operation went well. Everyone said I was the first patient to ever jump off the operating table after open heart surgery. It was a fun day and the real medical professionals thought John Travolta must have been hired for the part. Now reality cancer and Im going to Duke Cancer Center. WowI have cancerthis is no act!

Book excerpt: The bestselling author of Saving Graces shares her inspirational message on the challenges and blessings of coping with adversity. She’s one of the most beloved political figures in the country, and on the surface, seems to have led a charmed life. In many ways, she has. Beautiful family. Thriving career. Supportive friendship. Loving marriage. But she’s no stranger to adversity. Many know of the strength she had shown after her son, Wade, was killed in a freak car accident when he was only sixteen years old. She would exhibit this remarkable grace and courage again when the very private matter of her husband's infidelity became public fodder. And her own life has been on the line. Days before the 2004 presidential election—when her husband John was running for vice president—she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After rounds of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation the cancer went away—only to reoccur in 2007. While on the campaign trail, Elizabeth met many others who have had to contend with serious adversity in their lives, and in Resilience, she draws on their experiences as well as her own, crafting an unsentimental and ultimately inspirational meditation on the gifts we can find among life’s biggest challenges. This short, powerful, pocket-sized inspirational book makes an ideal gift for anyone dealing with difficulties in their life, who can find peace in knowing they are not alone, and promise that things can get better.

This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first Nursing book on cancer care designed around a conceptual model of whole person care. Key concepts are stress, healing, resilience and health. As a clinical model, nursing goals, desired outcomes, key concepts and proposed psychosocial interventions with patients and family caregivers, advance the practice of clinical nursing toward a more comprehensive understanding of the whole person with cancer and their loved ones. As a model for teaching nursing students about chronic illness, it provides a scientific basis for students to learn how to assess and care for the whole person and his loved one. As a model for clinical research in the field of cancer care, it serves as a predicate for the development, evaluation and interpretation of clinical interventions. The model is a dynamic framework that both informs and is informed by research findings. It is hoped that future research findings will reveal the optimal combination of interventions to provide comprehensive care across clinical contexts. With a patient-centred humanistic focus anchored by the quality of the nurse patient and family caregiver relationships, it is hoped that the nurse's technical, procedural and medical expertise may complement rather than define the nurse's approach to the whole patient and family. The book is structured to facilitate the reader's easy access to needed information. Each chapter examines a key concept of the model, and is organized around an introduction, learning objectives, definitions, and relevant research findings that serve as the scientific predicate for suggested interventions discussed in Part 4, Nursing approaches. Clinical and personal anecdotes, tables and figures illustrate the concepts under discussion. Nurse practitioners, clinic nurse specialists, nursing professors, graduate students, and nurse researchers may find this book a useful reference for conceptualizing whole person care, and for determining relevant interventions that promote healing, resilience and health. But it is also relevant for family doctors and fourth year students learning to care for the whole person with a chronic illness.
