Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the day my husband, Jim, was diagnosed with cancer, we began a journey that changed us forever. I was just a passenger, along for the ride, but I was profoundly affected by the illness. Jim frequently said he believed cancer is harder on the caregiver than the patient; I don’t believe that for a minute. One thing, though, is certain: the view from the passenger seat is….different. During our trip, I learned that being caregiver to a seriously ill person has problems different from, but equally as serious as, those of the patient. Like many thrust into this position, I was ill-equipped to handle the job. For help I turned to God, who “showed me great and mighty things, which I had not known before” (Jeremiah 33:3). After recovering from the initial shock of the diagnosis, I determined to help my husband fight the disease. I hoped that through diligent research we could learn which treatments, tools, and tricks might put him in the ten percent who survived this kind of cancer for five years. I became a woman with a mission. But I soon realized this missionary needed help. My real burden as a caregiver was the emotional stress not the physical. A cancer diagnosis is followed by a psychological and spiritual crisis as we move through the stages of grief toward acceptance. Before I could accept the possibility of my husband’s death,I had to answer the basic question “Why are we here and where are we going?” Once I had done that I was able to rest on God’s promises and find hope in the midst of a grim prognosis. When I relinquished all illusions of control and depended on God for my strength and wisdom my burden was lightened. I actually experienced moments of humor and joy on what would otherwise have been a dismal, terrifying trip. I found my place was not in the driver’s seat but in the passenger seat offering support to my husband, as God lovingly chauffeured us over the peaks and through the valleys. True to His Word, He made “a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert” (Isaiah 43:19). On the journey I learned more about the character of God. He helped me develop an attitude of thankfulness. As He met our every need, spiritual and emotional, I learned how the “Law of the Harvest” works. He showed me how to share my experiences with others to bring glory to Him. When I responded in obedience, the floodgates of heaven opened and He showered me with abundant blessings in the middle of a life crisis. As I moved through the stages of grief, God held me in His hand. I have never felt closer to Him than during that time. When I handed the steering wheel over to God, He guided me through each stage of the journey and left me with the roadmap I share in this story.

Book excerpt: "Adjusting to a life-threatening illness is akin to finding yourself dropped at the base of Mt. Everest and being told to start climbing. It is a difficult task at best, but a guide can show you the tools and techniques to make the journey much easier. And in so doing you can get some time to enjoy the view, now and then." In his moving and ultimately life-affirming book, What's the Next Step? My journey with cancer, first as a caregiver and then as a caretaker, Bob Fritz shares his experiences as a "caregiver" for his first wife, who succumbed after battling breast cancer for thirteen years, and then as a "caretaker," a patient himself, fighting brain cancer. But more than a sharing of experiences, Bob, an engineer by training, offers a set of "tools" gleaned from his caregiving and caretaking on how to deal with many of the difficult challenges that a person approaching life's end could encounter. These include "Fencing with the Physician," "A Friend Has Abandoned You in a Time of Need, Now What?" and "Who's in Charge Here?" The workbook format provides ample space for the reader to record his or her own insights and feelings. Many pages are introduced with thought-provoking quotations that encourage the reader to fully explore the topic being discussed. Without question, you will be inspired by this wonderful book and the thoughtful and perceptive man who wrote it.

Book excerpt: "You have cancer." These three simple words strike terror in the hearts of anyone diagnosed with this horrific disease. For any spouse, friend, partner, or relative, the news can be just as devastating. Suddenly, you find yourself in the role as caregiver. You want to help, but how? This heartwarming story offers insight into the life of the author, who stood by his wife's side as she confronted not one, but two very deadly episodes of cancer. The strategies provided in this touching book will benefit any new or even veteran caregiver, as well as patients, family members, friends, and members of the medical community that are wondering what they should know and do if, or when, personally confronted with a loved one or friend with a debilitating illness or injury. "We're In This Together" provides 70 Caregiver Tips learned during the author's journey as a caregiver, including: Receiving the news: How do I manage my emotions and still be supportive? Understanding diagnoses and treatments: Tracking the details that matter. Spending time in the hospital: How the new "normal" can be inspiring and even fun. Becoming the great communicator: Sharing the news with friends and family. Handling setbacks and overcoming obstacles: Finding the good in "every stinkin' day." Taking care of yourself: Balancing the demands of caregiving with your own personal needs. This emotional true story reads like a fast-paced, gripping action novel. At the same time, it's informative, thought provoking and a book you will not soon forget. The number of caregivers in the United States is staggering. According to the National Family Caregivers Association's caregiving statistics, more than 65 million people (that's 29 percent of the US population) provide care for a chronically ill, disabled, or aged family member or friend during any given year; on average, caregivers devote 20 hours per week providing care for loved ones. This book provides every caregiver, regardless of the reason or length of time they have been in this position with the valuable tools they need to navigate through their medical journey. The author provides solutions and support for dealing with the mental, physical and emotional aspects of caregiving. Being a caregiver can be a wonderful experience. It can change your life, all for the better. By reading this book, you, too, can appreciate every single day in a way you have never experienced before or ever thought imaginable. Here's What Others Are Saying About This Book: "Romantic and real, practical and inspiring, Rob Harris has struck a nerve with his helpful book about the journey he has been on with his wife. Caregiving unlocks the hero inside each of us, if we can just get past the fear. Rob shows us how to do that and reminds us that love really does transcend everything. If you're on a caregiving mission or if you just need to come face to face with humanity at its best, this book is for you." Leeza Gibbons, TV host and founder, Leeza's Place: A Place for Family Caregivers "I am so impressed with this book My vision is that this book would be a valuable addition to medical school and nursing school curriculum, serving as a trigger to help health professionals, patients, and caregivers alike understand what person-centered care really means. After all, we're in this together." Michael Fisch, MD, MPH, FACP, FAAHPM, chair, Department of General Oncology, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX "A passionate and heart-wrenching page-turner that eloquently captures the joys and frustrations of becoming a caregiver. An absolute must-read for anyone with loved ones fighting for their lives." Karen Glowacki, communications director, WhatNext.com

At least 17.7 million individuals in the United States are caregivers of an older adult with a health or functional limitation. The nation's family caregivers provide the lion's share of long-term care for our older adult population. They are also central to older adults' access to and receipt of health care and community-based social services. Yet the need to recognize and support caregivers is among the least appreciated challenges facing the aging U.S. population. Families Caring for an Aging America examines the prevalence and nature of family caregiving of older adults and the available evidence on the effectiveness of programs, supports, and other interventions designed to support family caregivers. This report also assesses and recommends policies to address the needs of family caregivers and to minimize the barriers that they encounter in trying to meet the needs of older adults.

Help is here in this brilliant, quick and simplified book backed with the best advice from a two-time cancer survivor who walked in similar shoes. Like a good friend holding your hand, Caryn Sullivan’s Happiness through Hardship is written in support of cancer patients, their caregivers and/or friends who need direction during the first few weeks after diagnosis. This cancer-surviving guide book empowers readers to take immediate steps for being prepared, less-stressed and able to find a little joy within the journey. Happiness through Hardship directs those facing an initial cancer diagnosis with positivity and hope. Structured with thoughtful tips and anecdotes, this short book provides gentle guidance from the first few days to the thickness of treatments, and includes a journal and note-taking pages to be used as a reference during doctor appointments and meetings. After her own cancer diagnosis, Caryn understands the importance of a book that’s easily digestible and not overwhelmingly long. Her insight provides a little light during the darker days. The first few weeks after diagnosis are often most challenging. Caryn was blessed to have three angels, Ellen Cavaiuolo, Mary Ann Wasil and Meghan Zucker guide her throughout the early days. This book is dedicated to them and half the proceeds will be donated to metastatic breast cancer research through The Cancer Couch Foundation.

Book excerpt: "When we first meet people, understandably, they are very shocked. They've just received a diagnosis that may significantly alter their life. And although we review all the information with them about diagnosis, treatment, and what to expect, not surprisingly most people don't process all of that...so it is helpful to have a caregiver...who's hearing the same information...who can help the patient know what to expect, and for that caregiver...to guide the patient through the process, in addition to us coaching and guiding the patient...." -Dr. Eric D. Jacobsen, MD Division of Hematologic Malignancies, Department of Medical Oncology, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute "There is power in a caregiver's ability to bear witness to a person who is suffering from serious illness. Being seen and validated in illness can provide strength to a sick person as they carry that acknowledgement as their ongoing proof of importance in this world. However, bearing witness is so very difficult, and the strength to do so clearly comes from the love shared between a patient and their caregiver. -Dr. Nancy T. Skehan, MD, Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School "Whether the caregivers are family members or close acquaintances, they can help bridge the gap between hope and despair, can provide clarity in the midst of confusion, and they can help guide the patient along a path fraught with fear and anxiety." -B. Joyce Gilmore, RN (Retd.)
