This means that 60 to 70% of the malignant neoplasias are disseminated either perceptibly (leukemias, visible metas tases) or imperceptibly, forming a 'minimal imperceptible disease', which local treatment leaves, whether it consists of surgery, radiotherapy, or surgery plus radiotherapy. When the neoplastic tissue is voluminous enough to be per ceptible, cures can be obtained with chemotherapy or chemo immunotherapy. When the neoplastic disease is imperceptible, made up of micrometastases, it apparently can be cured by systemic postsurgical chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or chemoimmunotherapy. Hence there is the need for intensive development of these medical therapies which are applied by the medical oncol ogist and, at present, consist of chemotherapy, immuno therapy, or chemoimmunotherapy. These medical thera peutics can only grow with scientific development, the main weapon of which is experimental and clinical pharmacology. These volumes report the communications presented at the 1979 EORTC Annual Plenary Session on Cancer Chemo and Immunopharmacology.

Book excerpt: Transplantation of syngeneic (donor is a monozygous twin) or allogeneic (donor is an HLA-identical sibling) marrow provides the opportunity for aggressive antileukemic therapy without regard to marrow toxicity. Until 1975, marrow transplantation was carried out only after failure of all other therapy. Consequently, most patients were in advanced relapse. Six of 16 recipients of syngeneic marrow and 13 of 100 recipients of allogeneic marrow are still in remission after 5. 5-10 years [3, 7]. An actuarial survival curve of the first 100 patients grafted in Seattle after conditioning with cyclophos phamide (60 mg/kg on each of 2 successive days) and total body irradiation (1,000 rad) showed three periods of interest: (1) The first 4 months showed a rapid loss of patients associated with advanced illness, graft-versus-host disease, infections (in particular interstitial pneumonias), and recurrent leukemia; (2) from 4 months to 2 years, the curve showed a much slower rate of decline attributable primarily to recurrent leukemia; and (3) from 2-10 years, the curve was almost flat with a negligible loss of patients and no recurrent leukemia. This flat portion of the curve corresponded to 13% of the patients and indicates a strong probability that the majority of these survivors are cured of their disease [8]. Attempts at reducing the incidence of leukemic relapse after transplantation were made by a number of marrow transplant groups by added chemotherapy.

Carter Northern California Cancer Program, 1801 Page Mill Road, Building B, Suite 200, USA - Palo Alto, CA 94304 The bilateral collaborative program in cancer research between Japan and the United States is one of the oldest programs of this type. It is sponsored in the United States by the National Cancer Institute [1], while in Japan the sponsoring organization is the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Annual symposia concerning treatment have been held and in recent years they have been published [2, 3]. Drug development in both Japan and the United States has evolved over the years to an increasing emphasis on second generation compounds. This has come about as a result of the initial successes of chemotherapy development. Many active structures have been uncovered and the armamentarium of the medical and pediatric oncologist has grown dramatically. The uncovering of an active structure provides an opportunity for analog synthesis and attempts at elucidating structure-activity relationships. It is hoped that the therapeutic index of active structures can be improved so as to achieve superior clinical results.

Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research lnstitut~ on the campus of the University of South Florida, an international symposium, "The First Annual H. Lee Moffitt Symposium on Cancer Biology and Therapeutics" was held in Tampa, Florida on January 20-22, 1986. In this first symposium we decided to present a broad-based series of topics dealing with the major issues in the field of cancer. These topics ranged from the biochemistry of the cancer cell to the design of antineoplastic agents, through tumor cell heterogeneity, treatment of ltuman neoplasms to immunological aspects of cancer biology and tr~atment. The speakers chosen represented individuals of international acclaim who are very active in the area of cancer research and treatment. The symposium brought together scien tists/physicians from six nations including Austria, Canada, France, Hungary, West Germany, and of course, the United States. The congeniality of the participants promoted the friendly exchange of knowledge which, it is hoped, will greatly hasten the time when successful management of human cancer will become routine. Future symposia in this series will be highly focused and will deal with a single facet of this vast field of cancer research and treatment. Joseph G. Cory, Editor Andor Szentivanyi, Editor University of South Florida, 1986 V ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This volume presents the Proceedings of the H. Lee Moffitt International Syn~osium on Cancer Biology and Therapeutics which was held in Tampa, Florida on January 20, 21, and 22, 1986.

Book excerpt: This book comprises the lectures presented at the workshop Modified Nuc1eosides and Cancer held from 28 September to 2 October, 1981 in Freiburg, West Germany. The workshop was organized by Gisela Nass and sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The purpose of the workshop was to cover the varied analytical methods for quantitative and qualitative determination of modified nucleosides and their metabolism including bio synthesis, all in relation to the function of these compounds in the origin and growth of cancer cells. The potential signi ficance of measuring modified nucleosides in body fluids for tumor diagnosis in humans received particular attention. Various fields of research which have previously been segregat ed are thus unified in this volume. Emphasis was also placed on the fact that modified nucleosides are constituents of the genetic material, the desoxyribonucleic> acid, on the one hand, and of the transfer ribonucleic acids on the other hand, with the latter macromolecules participating not only in the translation of genetic information into protein, but also in many regulatory processes in all single- and multi-, cellular organisms including man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1980 the Royal College of Radiologists, London, held its Second Symposium on Clinical Oncology. The subject was Prostatic Cancer and this publication is based on the presen tations at this meeting by leading authorities in the United Kingdom. The principal objective of these Symposia is to promote multi disciplinary collaboration for the benefit of cancer patients. Awareness and understanding of advances in a broad range of subjects are essential to ensure the timely and effective appli cation of new techniques in the prevention and treatment of all forms of cancer. Communication of this kind may also stimulate the creation of new ideas that may prove to be of more fundamental relevance to cancer research. Prostatic cancer has been afforded too little attention in the past, and its importance in Clinical Oncology has not been adequately recognised. And yet over the last 10 years consid erable progress has been recorded in our understanding of this disease and in its assessment and management. These achieve ments are well documented in this collection of papers and the outstanding problems are also clearly indicated. It is acknowl edged that the early diagnosis of prostatic cancer presents a continuing challenge, associated with the uncertainties that concern the clinical significance of 'latent' cancer of the prostate. The accurate assessment of the incidence and preva lence of the disease is extremely difficult and together these problems complicate the evaluation of the management of early or localised prostatic cancer.

Book excerpt: Chemotherapy for malignant disease has brought about many rapid and often spectacular improvements in the survival rate of some groups of patients. Yet enthusiasm for these successes has, in part, been offset by the problems in evaluating responses to treatment and by the disappointment of failing to check the progress of still so many other tumours. These reactions will be no surprise to the medical historian but perhaps the expectations from scientific progress nowadays sometimes demand more than can reasonably be expected. Another expectation is that any review of chemotherapy is com pletely up to date, even prophetic. Such is the expansion of the subject that new drugs and trial results are continually being reported but it is this very mass of information that creates its own problems and makes many clinicians despair of finding a balanced judgement on all of this information. This was the challenge accepted by Professor Spiers. He then gathered together a group of colleagues who are amongst the acknowledged leaders in the field of chemotherapy for urological tumours, all of whom have made important contributions to this subject. However, each chapter is not merely a record of the author's experience but encompasses an assessment of past and present practice as well as perspectives in diagnosis and management. Almost all chapters include reference to published work up to and including 1981.
