Book excerpt: Sir Nicholas Winton rescued 669 Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia at the brink of World War II. Most never saw their parents again. This is his story. *Now a major motion picture starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter* In 1938, 29-year-old "Nicky" cancelled a ski trip and instead spent nine months masterminding a seemingly impossible plan to rescue hundreds of Jewish children and find them homes in the United Kingdom. Over 6,000 people are alive today because of his efforts. What motivated an ordinary man to do something so extraordinary? This book, written by his daughter, Barbara, explores the 106-year life of an incredible humanitarian, a man whose legacy only came to public light decades later. His life story is a clarion call to choose action over apathy in the face of injustice, and a reminder that every one of us can change the world. "If something is not impossible, then there must be a way to do it."

Book excerpt: Dana Andrews, arguably the finest minimalist actor of his generation, as one critic commented, could convey more with one look than many actors could with a soliloquy. In a film career spanning nearly five decades, Andrews appeared in some of Hollywood's most prestigious productions, including The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) and The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). His unique screen presence was shown at its best in such film noir classics as Laura (1944) and Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950). Beginning with an absorbing biographical chapter, this critical survey of Dana Andrews' screen career features a complete filmography with synopses, reviews, behind-the-scenes anecdotes and insightful comments from Andrews and his coworkers. A chronological list of television, radio and theater credits is included.

Book excerpt: In this biography of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (1850-1937), the founder of the Czechoslovak republic, and of his son Jan Masaryk (1886-1948), who became foreign minister in the Czechoslovak government-in-exile in London during World War II, the author retraces their lives against the dramatic background of the history of Central and Eastern Europe. “Zeman is sympathetic to his subjects but completely honest in presenting them as men, not myths.” — John C. Campbell, Foreign Affairs “Dr. Zeman draws an interesting portrait of [T.G. Masaryk] the ‘scholar President’, an individualistic, curiously apolitical and yet far-sighted figure... The author has written a sound biography, at its best in the descriptions of Masaryk’s attempts to found the new state.” — Lisanne Radice, International Affairs “Zeman’s portrait of the Masaryks is engagingly written and may be profitably read by the non-specialist.” — Victor S. Mamatey, The American Historical Review

Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this convenient resource provides systematic information on how Czech republic deals with the role religion plays or can play in society, the legal status of religious communities and institutions, and the legal interaction among religion, culture, education, and media. After a general introduction describing the social and historical background, the book goes on to explain the legal framework in which religion is approached. Coverage proceeds from the principle of religious freedom through the rights and contractual obligations of religious communities; international, transnational, and regional law effects; and the legal parameters affecting the influence of religion in politics and public life. Also covered are legal positions on religion in such specific fields as church financing, labour and employment, and matrimonial and family law. A clear and comprehensive overview of relevant legislation and legal doctrine make the book an invaluable reference source and very useful guide. Succinct and practical, this book will prove to be of great value to practitioners in the myriad instances where a law-related religious interest arises in Czech republic. Academics and researchers will appreciate its value as a thorough but concise treatment of the legal aspects of diversity and multiculturalism in which religion plays such an important part.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Southwestern sleuth tries to retrieve some relics—and solve a murder—in a novel by an author who “knows how to hook the reader from the get-go” (Albuquerque Journal). Pot thief Hubie Schuze is back, and this time his larceny is for a good cause. He wants to recover sacred relics lifted from San Roque, a mysterious pueblo that is closed to outsiders. Usually Hubie finds his pottery a few feet underground—but these artifacts are one hundred fifty feet above the New Mexico soil, on the top floor of the Rio Grande Lofts. Hubie will need all his deductive skills to craft the perfect plan—which is thwarted when he encounters the beautiful Stella. And then he is arrested for murder. That tends to happen when you are in the room with the body, with blood on your hands. Follow Hubie as he stays one step ahead of security toughs, one step behind Stella, and never too far from a long fall. The Pot Thief Who Studied Ptolemy is the 2nd book in the Pot Thief Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book excerpt: Uwe Johnson's major novel, Jahrestage, is recognized as one of the most important and ambitious works of post-war German literature. The core to this novel is remembrance, and Jahrestage is a stunning requiem for the victims of twentieth-century German history. D.G. Bond concentrates on the text, analysing the novel and the calendar form of this work, and paying particular attention to the ways in which even the minutest details of Johnson's narrative reveal its historical themes. The author discusses Johnson's poetics, offers readings of his other major works, and considers the most recent trends in Johnson reception. He shows how an uncompromising view of German identity after the crimes of the Third Reich constitutes the very heart of Johnson's work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do the EU and NATO threaten Russian security? The book explores the rise of these exclusive ’inter-democratic’ security institutions after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the ensuing effects on relations with Russia. Two competing theories are tested to explore whether these institutions aggravate or mitigate the security dilemma with Russia. These institutions can be theorised to promote security as a positive-sum game through European integration and democracy promotion, or pursue collective hegemony with ideologically uncompromising bloc-politics. Glenn Diesen argues that a European security architecture that demotes the largest state on the continent to an object of security inevitably results in ’European integration’ becoming a zero-sum geopolitical project that has set the West on a collision course with Russia.

Book excerpt: The majority of the successful SOE operations in Europe took place in countries occupied by the Germans after the outbreak of war in 1939, Hitler’s forces being regarded as foreign invaders. In Czechoslovakia it was different. The country, which had large numbers of ethnic Germans living within its borders, had been occupied since 1938, allowing the Germans to establish a strong hold on the country which limited the opportunities for subversive action by resistance movements. Nevertheless, resist the Czechs did, despite the Germans conducting savage and indiscriminate reprisals. It was against this background that SOE attempted to infiltrate its agents into Czechoslovakia in 1941, their role being to help in co-ordinating and expanding the resistance movement and to establish communications with the Czech authorities in the UK. Successful actions were admittedly few before 1942 when one of the most successful SOE-backed operations resulted in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the highest-ranking Nazi to be killed by any resistance group. The huge wave of reprisals against the civilian population which followed severely hampered SOE activities in the immediate aftermath. Another factor which limited SOE’s ability to infiltrate Czechoslovakia and to supply the resistance was the distance and difficulty experienced by the RAF in flying to the region. During the short nights of summer, no flights could be attempted. This changed in September 1943 when sorties were able to be conducted from Italy, and by 1944 the scale of operations increased both in frequency and scale. More than 300 Czechs were trained by SOE and, in conjunction with local resistance groups, those that managed to infiltrate back into their homeland, kept the occupying forces constantly on the alert, ensuring that Germany’s eastern flank was never entirely secure. This is the first full, official account of SOE in Czechoslovakia, compiled by SOE headquarters staff who had direct access to all the organisation’s records, many of which were destroyed after the war.
