Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines social, political, and economic relations in primarily European coastal locations through the lens of tourism. The contributors explore the intersecting interests of fishing, tourism, and development and the conflict among local communities and market forces, all of which are infused with the symbolism of the sea as a place of mystery and danger. From the tensions between Cornish villagers and city visitors to the explosion of resort development in Gran Canaria, the authors consider the relationship between local residents, businesses, and tourist newcomers as they vie for status, influence, and, ultimately, for space.

Book excerpt: Increased tourism benefits local economies by creating more revenue and employment options as interest in the location grows. However, as the hospitality and travel industry continues to grow and adapt, it becomes imperative that they implement socially responsible procedures. Corporate Social Responsibility in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry discusses issues and challenges faced by organizations implementing responsible business practices within the travel, hotel, leisure and hospitality industries. Featuring best practices and theoretical concepts on the support of local economies, ethical sourcing of native goods, and sustainability procedures, this publication is a vital source for policy makers, academicians, researchers, students, technology developers, and government officials interested in emergent ethical and moral practices within the travel industry.

Book excerpt: This book analyses the problematics of archaeological heritage management in the Canary Islands, which are echoed in other parts of the world where the indigenous heritage is under-represented. The present-day management of Canarian archaeological heritage has a very specific and unusual context given that the archipelago is located on the fringes of Europe, belonging to Spain and therefore to the European Unión, but geographically and in terms of early history being part of Africa. From a theoretical perspective, then, the proposed book analyzes issues such as the effects of colonialism and eurocentrism on the management of the archaeological heritage. It also examines the evolutionist and historico-cultural models used to analyze past societies and, ultimately, used to create identities that influence archaeological heritage management itself. From a practical point of view, the book presents a proposal for enhancing the archaeological heritage of the Canary Islands through the creation of archaeological parks (providing some concrete examples in the case of the city of La Laguna) and the active involvement of the local community. Parallel to this, the book considers the Canarian Archipelago as part of a problematic that is not unique to this area but is an example of poor indigenous heritage management overall. It demonstrates how the course of history and the politics of the past still have an excessive influence on the way in which the present-day archaeological heritage is interpreted and managed. Therefore, this book provides an almost unique opportunity for uncovering the history of archaeology within the margins of Europe (in fact, in an African region) and exploring colonial and foreign influences. In many ways it is a mirror of archaeological mainstreams and an exercise in (re)thinking the aim and status of present-day archaeology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small territories and islands are significant flashpoints in the contemporary world order. They are both exposed to the vicissitudes of international power rivalries and can find it difficult to sustain a stable internal political and economic order. Originally published in 1983 this book provides a balance between enclaves and islands, between Indian and Atlantic Ocean territories and between territories that were self-governing and those that were still integrated into metropolitan political units. Each of the authors shares a close familiarity with the territories they surveyed: one that goes into a direct and sometimes brutal appreciation of the difficulties and realities of constructing a modern life in such limiting contexts
