Download or read book Retail Nation written by Donica Belisle and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of walking down a store aisle replete with displays, salespeople, and infinite choice is so common we often forget retail has a short history. Retail Nation traces Canada's transformation into a modern consumer society back to an era 1890 to 1940 when department stores such as Eaton's ruled the shopping scene and promised to strengthen the nation. Department stores emerge as agents of modern nationalism, but the nation they helped to define white, consumerist, middle-class was more limited, and contested, than nostalgic portraits of the early department store suggest.
Book Synopsis Competition in the Open Economy by : Richard E. Caves
Download or read book Competition in the Open Economy written by Richard E. Caves and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the nations of the world becoming more interdependent, it is imperative to take international influences into account in understanding the organization of industry within a country. This book extends the structure/conduct/performance framework of analysis to present a fully specified simultaneous equation model of an open economy--Canada. By estimating a system of equations of all the major variables, the authors can identify which variables are dependent and which are independent. They are thus able to assess the relative importance of such factors as seller concentration, import competition, retailing structure, advertising expenditure, research and development spending, and technical and allocative efficiency in shaping the organization of industry in Canada. In addition, using both industry-level and firm-level data, the authors develop methods for assessing the effect of structural variables on diversification strategies and the consequences for market performance. They also study the effects of such variables on firms' access to capital markets. The book concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings for government policy.

Book excerpt: Why does Canada have such an inflated portion of the global bubble gum market? What is driving modern versions of the old penny candy store? Candymaking in Canada takes the wrapper off Canada’s thriving chocolate and sweets industry. Confectionery is a global business with remarkably regional tastes, and this book offers a first-time glimpse inside it. It’s a nostalgic look at the chocolate phenomenon, the role of seasonal treats, and the importance of packaging. From the sugary highs to the low-fat lows, this is the story behind many of Canada’s favourite brands in a beautifully illustrated volume.

Book excerpt: This collection brings together published papers on key themes which book historians have identified as of particular significance in the history of twentieth-century publishing. It reprints some of the best comparative perspectives and most insightful and innovatively presented scholarship on publishing and book history from such figures as Philip Altbach, Lewis Coser, James Curran, Elizabeth Long, Laura Miller, Angus Phillips, Janice Radway, Jonathan Rose, Shafquat Towheed, Catherine Turner, Jay Satterfield, Clare Squires, Eva Hemmungs Wirtén. It is arranged into six sections which examine the internationalisation of publishing businesses, changing notions of authorship, innovation in the design and marketing of books, the specific effects of globalisation on creative property and the book in a multimedia marketplace. Twentieth-century book history attracts an audience beyond the traditional disciplines of librarianship, bibliography, history and literary studies. It will appeal to publishing educators, editors, publishers, booksellers, as well as academics with an interest in media and popular culture.
