Book Synopsis Global Change and Intellectual Property Agencies by : G. Bruce Doern
Download or read book Global Change and Intellectual Property Agencies written by G. Bruce Doern and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global change affects all areas of public policy and crucial aspects of governing institutions. National and international intellectual property (IP) agencies are increasingly at the fulcrum of such change but are among the least well-examined of governing and policy realms. Among the oldest agencies of government, they are moving from a long era of contented obscurity to that of increasing political and economic exposure and controversy. This is the first book to examine IP agencies in the context of this transformation. Taking a basic institutional perspective, the book examines the changes in and relationships among four national and international IP agencies: the patent offices of the US, UK, Canada and Australia; the World Intellectual Property Office, the European Patent Office and the World Trade Organization. Focusing on the 1990s, the book traces institutional changes that centre on the core trade-off in intellectual property policy between protection and dissemination of intellectual property. These are examined in relation to the two broad dusters of interests that operate around the protection versus dissemination functions. The former is dominated by big business and the IP professions and the latter by much more dispersed and emerging interests.
Book Synopsis Canadian Intellectual Property by : G. Bruce Doern
Download or read book Canadian Intellectual Property written by G. Bruce Doern and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defining and regulating 'intellectual property' is a growing industry for information brokers, economists, and the legal profession. While other authors have documented the intellectual property (IP) market and its laws (copyright, patents, trademarks, and licensing), Bruce Doern and Markus Sharaput are the first Canadian political scientists to make the leap from simple description to detailed analysis. The authors delve into the politics of big business and protectionism, lobbies in the healthcare industry, regional imbalances, equitable dissemination, and internal pressures. Among the conclusions advanced by Doern and Sharaput is that the main impetus for change in Canada has come ultimately from American corporate and political forces seeking to strengthen IP protection at the expense of IP dissemination. The authors show that Canada initially resisted such pressures but ultimately adopted the American influence as being in Canada's interest in the new age of innovation. Intellectual property user and dissemination-oriented interests are emerging, which will likely change the politics of IP in the first decade of the next century. Future politics in Canada will indeed shift from its outmoded, limited propensity for micro-economic policy to a timely recognition of the importance of knowledge and innovation at century's end.

Book Synopsis Rules and Unruliness by : G. Bruce Doern
Download or read book Rules and Unruliness written by G. Bruce Doern and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical examination of Canadian regulatory governance and politics over the past fifty years, Rules and Unruliness builds on the theory and practice of rule-making to show why government "unruliness" - the inability to form rules and implement structures for compliance - is endemic and increasing. Analyzing regulatory politics and governance in Canada from the beginning of Pierre Trudeau's era to Stephen Harper's government, the authors present a compelling argument that current regulation of the economy, business, and markets are no longer adequate to protect Canadians. They examine rules embedded in public spending programs and rules regarding political parties and parliamentary government. They also look at regulatory capitalism to elucidate how Canada and most other advanced economies can be characterized by co-governance and co-regulation between governments, corporations, and business interest groups. Bringing together literature on public policy, regulation, and democracy, Rules and Unruliness is the first major study to show how and why increasing unruliness affects not only the regulation of economic affairs, but also the social welfare state, law and order, parliamentary democracy, and the changing face of global capitalism.
