Book excerpt: One of the major purposes of this book is to help clarify the term "industrial relations" and thus to assist meaningful discussion about the strengths and deficiencies of the body of thought to which it refers. The editors' premise is that industrial relations is a multinational field whose disciples should be seeking principles that apply over the broadest span of time and space. Contributors include Roy J. Adams, Jack Barbash, Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld, Braham Dabscheck, John Godard, Steve M. Hills, Kevin Hince, Thomas Kochan, Viateur Larouche and Michel Audet, Craig R. Littler, Noah M. Meltz, Michael Poole, Paula Voos, and Hoyt Wheeler, with an introduction by Roy J. Adams.

This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . . . the book is both wide-ranging and thought provoking. . . New Directions in the Study of Work and Employment is a first rate collection of papers that provides a state-of-the-art overview of debates on the health and standing of the field of industrial relations. John Kelly, Transfer Charles Whalen s excellent edited volume New Directions in the Study of Work and Employment is a conversation about renewing the academic discipline formerly known as industrial relations. . . The chapters of this book are uniformly of high quality and provocative. . . It inspires the reader to engage and mend the world a bit. David Jacobs, Heterodox Economics Newsletter . . . an intellectually stimulating collection of informed, sound, and innovative responses to modern labor problems. . . . New Directions is a timely work that deserves wide readership by anyone with an association or interest in industrial relations. Although the matter of revitalization of the field of IR is not nearly a new topic, dismissing this volume as simply another typical prescription in the lineage of IR revitalization commentary would be a gross miscalculation. For one, the sheer breadth and depth of the contributing scholars brings a unique intellectual richness to this project. Also, this book distinctively tackles the issue of revitalization from a multitude of perspectives from social capital to network theories to labor and employment law, and from research and theory to teaching and practice and does so in a way that is comprehensive, continuous, and in dialog throughout. Finally this book makes a significant contribution because of its specific recommendations for IR revitalization. Instead of telling scholars and practitioners the need for a new direction but providing few feasible alternatives, New Directions proffers real pathways for progress. This book is a useful guide for navigating the ever-developing world of work and employment relations. Sean Rogers, Perspectives on Work Where is the field of industrial relations going? How can it be rejuvenated? How can it be reformulated to deal with current problems? These are among the difficult questions this stimulating book addresses. George Strauss, University of California, Berkeley, US This book deserves to be widely read. The academic study of industrial relations has recently struggled to adjust to the brave new world of work and employment relations. Too often there has been a retreat into the study of very small issues and insufficient emphasis on the big picture. The chapters in this volume make a valuable contribution to filling this gap. Most important of all, the book is forward-looking. Ken Mayhew, University of Oxford, UK Charles Whalen has assembled a timely and comprehensive examination of the world of work by a distinguished group of international scholars. Robert B. McKersie, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US This book represents a breath of fresh air, provided by many of the most prominent scholars in industrial relations today. It anchors the field to its past, but more importantly highlights pathways to the future. It is indispensable reading, and will form a solid foundation for continued dialogue about new directions for the study of work and employment. Morley Gunderson, University of Toronto, Canada Work and its associated problems are more important to individuals and society than ever before. That is why it is so crucial to re-envision the field of industrial relations (employment relations), which brings together economics, sociology, psychology, history, human resource management, political science, and all other areas of scholarship related to work. This compendium by leading industrial relations scholars makes a vital contribution in that direction. Paula B. Voos, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, US Industrial relations is confronting major challenges. This valuable book deserves a warm welcome since it illustrates and maps a series o

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past fifteen years have been difficult for the labor movements in industrial countries. Gary N. Chaison addresses questions implicit in the decline of unions in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand: How and why do labor unions merge under pressure? What role do mergers play in the unions' strategies to deal with membership losses, management opposition, and hostile governments? Are there distinctive national profiles of union mergers? Chaison begins by describing the dynamics of the union merger process as large unions combine with each other in amalgamations, as small unions are absorbed into larger ones, and as local unions affiliate into nationals. He discusses the reasons for mergers, the barriers to consolidation, and the problems of integration which may result. The five chapters that follow are arranged in order of increasing intensity in merger activity, ranging from the United States, where interest in mergers is growing, to New Zealand, where changing legislation has catalyzed an enormous wave of mergers. For each of the five countries considered, Chaison characterizes the industrial relations climate and merger record since 1980, explains landmark mergers, identifies the antecedents, and assesses the chances that a sudden flood of mergers will occur. The final chapter compares the national profiles, extrapolating the significant differences and common threads. Chaison concludes that while mergers can play a critical role in revitalizing labor movements and building the dominant unions of the future, they are not necessarily solving the fundamental economic and political problems that plague unions.

Book excerpt: The previous edition of this directory extended its coverage of the Far East, Australasia and Latin America, areas previously under-represented. For this new edition emphasis has been given to increasing the number of entries for organizations from Britain, the United States and Australia, and particular attention has been paid to new political organizations in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The number of entries included has gone up to over 68,000 of which over 9,000 are new or amended. Cross-references from defunct organizations in the previous edition have been deleted, and references (indicated by ex and now) added for organizations which have changed their name since the previous edition. As before, the range of organizations included is broad and only purely local organizations have been excluded. This directory therefore lists official and unofficial organizations, national and international, on all SUbjects: political, economic and social. Acronyms of parent bodies of subsidiary organizations are given where appropriate and equivalencies are used to link acronyms in different languages for the same organization. Further information about the organizations listed can be found in the sources listed in the bibliography. Book excerpt: "An important and timely book that engages a uniquely critical perspective on the liberal ideology of social cohesion from a labour perspective. I can think of no other source with the depth of analysis and range of case studies." – Colin Mooers, editor of The New Imperialists: Ideologies of Empire As working people’s lives become increasingly fragmented, competitive, and unequal, debates about social cohesion capture the unease of contemporary society over growing economic restructuring. Solidarity First examines the concept and practice of social cohesion in terms of its impact on, and significance for, workers in Canada. It will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of public policy, political science, sociology, and labour studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributors from public health, sociology, anthropology, nursing, management, economics, labor studies, and other fields look at four challenges to expanding needs-based justice for job related injury while preserving work-based prosperity. They are the dramatic rise in disability associated with the changing nature of work, methods of preventing injury and disability, the need for rehabilitation, and the difficulty of reconciling fairness for workers with economic sustainability in a competitive era. The focus is on empirical research and case studies in Canada, and several of the studies began as submissions to the British Colombia Royal Commission on Workers' Compensation in the spring of 1998.
