Book excerpt: "In recent years, there has been increasing interest in sustainable energy production across the globe. This has led to increased export opportunities for North American bioenergy producers. The production of wood pellets in Canada is one industry that has greatly benefited from the increased demand for renewable energy. This paper uses analytical tools outlines by Michael Porter in his 1979 paper ?How Competitive Forces Shape Strategy? as well as his 1990 paper ?The Competitive Advantage of Nations? to examine the wood pellet manufacturing industry. These tools include Porter’s ?5 Forces Model? as well as his ?Diamond Model.? These models are used to define the competitive forces in the domestic market that provide competitive advantages / disadvantages as well to define the attributes of Canada as a nation that give it its competitive advantages / disadvantages in the global market. The overall outcome of the analysis shows that Canada can be competitive on the basis that it has abundant resources and established related and supporting industries; however there are many challenges to overcome to improve its competitive position. These challenges are associated with the access to raw materials, transportation costs and labor availability to name a few. Government can play a role to improve Canada’s position by implementing programs to improve domestic access to raw materials, infrastructure and knowledge resources. Government can also play a role to open up new markets internationally. The overarching uncertainty with regards to the long term sustainability of the wood pellet manufacturing industry pertains to emerging technologies. These new technologies will either shore up the wood pellet manufacturing industry or serve as more economical and renewable substitutes."--Leaf ii.

Book excerpt: This thesis aims to enable Canadian wood pellet producers with the opportunity to offer competitive pricing through optimization of their value chains and supply chains, by employing an operational-level decision support tool (DST). Improving the competitiveness of Canada's individual wood pellet manufacturers will ultimately improve Canada's position amidst the rapidly developing global wood pellet market. Primary information is used from a case study of Industries Lacwood (ILW), in Hearst, ON; a firm that produces wood pellets using residue generated from processing of its primary wood items. The specific objectives of this study are to: 1) Determine how to optimize the operations of a wood pellet producer, through a comparison of three different gross margin (GM) optimization models, given uncertain demand conditions. These three models will illustrate why it is important to utilize inventory and a variable production rate, in order to most effectively optimize the GM of a pellet producer, given uncertain consumer demand. 2) Produce 100 demand datasets (to satisfy the Central Limit Theorem) for pellet 1 and pellet 2 and run these datasets through each of the three models created for objective 1. Compare the GM results of the three models and demonstrate why the operational environment specified in model 2 should be used for GM optimization of wood pellet producers, and will be used for further analysis. 3) Generate stochastic demand schedules for pellets by averaging the 100 demand datasets produced for objective 2. Use these stochastic demand schedules as the base case demand input values for model 2, along with other standard input values (obtained from ILW). Benchmark output values of production, inventory and unfulfilled demand generated from these standard inputs are compared with output values of production, inventory and unfulfilled demand generated from the variable inputs of 11 different scenarios. These comparisons will illustrate how model 2 is a comprehensive DST that the operational-level managers of wood pellet producers may use to achieve optimal GMs for the producer, under uncertain demand conditions and with other variable input factors. The results show that the model is most sensitive to fluctuations in demand, supply and inventory holding costs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Canada is one of the world leaders in wood pellet production and export, however, domestic consumption is extremely low. In addition there is no national standard in Canada for wood pellets. The Canadian government announced that it will increase wood pellet usage as an alternative to coal and natural gas. Wood pellets when compared to natural gas and coal, is an environmental friendly, energy-intensive and easily transported alternative. An independent comparative analysis of prime class (residential) wood pellets was performed in this study. We tested eight producers from five Canadian provinces (BC, ON, MB, NS and QC). The measurements of pellet quality characteristics (i.e., calorific value, moisture content, ash content, durability, bulk density, fines amount, compressive strength, fixed carbon and volatile organic compounds) were analysed. We carried out a statistical analysis of our results with the intent of finding interdependences between parameters. The analysis results show that average values of tested parameters are matching European and North American standards. Significant correlations between several parameters were found. It was also noted that there is a significant correlation between compressive resistance and pellet durability. Therefore, it was found that it is possible to use the compressive resistance test for rapid determination of pellet quality. A linear regression model for predicting mechanical durability was also developed. According to the comparative analysis it will be possible to set parameters equal to other countries for future national standard development in Canada. This will give an opportunity to increase domestic consumption and bring biomass energy through micro-generating and heating projects to geographically isolated areas and to small forest communities as an alternative and easily accessible energy source."-- from abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Rutherford has said that all science is either physics or stamp collecting. On that basis the study of forest biomass must be classified with stamp collecting and other such pleasurable pursuits. Japanese scientists have led the world, not only in collecting basic data, but in their attempts to systematise our knowledge of forest biomass. They have studied factors affecting dry matter production of forest trees in an attempt to approach underlying phYf'ical principles. This edition of Professor Satoo's book has been made possible the help of Dr John F. Hosner and the Virginia Poly technical Institute and State University who invited Dr Satoo to Blacksburg for three months in 1973 at about the time when he was in the final stages of preparing the Japanese version. Since then the explosion of world literature on forest biomass has continued to be fired by increasing shortages of timber supplies in many parts of the world as well as by a need to explore renewable sources of energy. In revising the original text I have attempted to maintain the input of Japanese work - much of which is not widely available outside Japan - and to update both the basic information and, where necessary, the conclusions to keep them in tune with current thinking. Those familiar with the Japanese original will find Chapter 3 largely rewritten on the basis of new work - much of which was initiated while Dr Satoo was in Blacksburg.
