Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal objective of this report is to examine Canada's shrinking presence in the Asia-Pacific region in light of the trade & investment opportunities there, and to make recommendations for a new Asia-Pacific policy aimed at reinvigorating Canada's ties with the region. The introduction reviews the work of the Subcommittee on International Trade, Trade Disputes & Investment in preparing the report. Chapter 2 examines recent trends in economic growth, reform, & integration in the region, as well as some of the trade opportunities in specific sectors, and makes the case for increased trade & investment. The final chapter outlines the Subcommittee's recommendations in three categories: removing barriers to trade & investment; creation of an environment to enable pursuing closer economic ties; and the federal role in helping the Canadian business community succeed in the region. Appendices include background information on Asian economic reforms, intra-regional trade agreements in Asia-Pacific, and the Canadian trade & investment relationship with the region. It also includes dissenting opinions about the report.
Book Synopsis Mapping Canada's Footprint in Asia by :
Download or read book Mapping Canada's Footprint in Asia written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Canada doing in Asia? What are Canadian enterprises doing in Asia? The answer is quite a lot, but getting to this answer was not easy. Comprehensive, easily-accessible information pertaining to Canada's investment, trade, and human capital flows in Asia is unclear, lacks aggregation, and is not readily available to the public. As a result, the narrative concerning Canada's footprint in Asia is incomplete and unfocused, much to the detriment of Canadian business as well as Asian market economies. To address this, the CanAsia mapping project tracks Canadian presence in Asia by aggregating and analyzing publically available country- and Canadian company-level data. The project establishes where we are, proposes where we want to be, and charts how we get there. For the purposes of the project, a sample group of countries (the "A-16") was chosen that includes the six major Asian economies-China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Taiwan, and the Republic of Korea (Korea)-and the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Furthermore, the project contextualizes engagement with the region by benchmarking Canadian performance against that of comparator countries such as the United States, Australia, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Book excerpt: Canada has benefited from Asia's seemingly-insatiable demand for natural resources over the last decade, with coal, iron ore, and oilseeds enjoying particular success. However, while Asia is now our second largest trade relationship, Canada only captures 1 per cent of Asia's goods imports, compared with 2 per cent 20 years ago. In addition, growth in investment and commercial services is especially poor. So what can be done to build more Canadian presence in Asia? With the commodity supercycle drawing to a close, Canada will need to adapt its export mix to grow?or even maintain?its market share in Asia. Fortunately, there are numerous industries in Asia with rapidly growing demand for Canadian exports, offering business opportunities for growth. Growth areas in the goods sector include: Vehicles and parts; pharmaceuticals; iron ore/steel; nickel; rubber; copper; lead; and niches within the food industry Growth areas in the services sector include: Health; education; finance and insurance; engineering and architectural; digital services; and supply chain logistics Join Jacqueline Palladini, Senior Economist, as she presents the findings of this new Global Commerce Centre research into Canada's performance in Asian markets and the opportunities that exist in this fast-growing region.

Download or read book The Changing Nature of Asian-Latin American Economic Relations written by German King and published by UN. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La 4e de couverture indique : "The swift expansion of developing Asia is probably the most significant structural change in the world economy of the twenty-first century. Latin America, and in particular South America, have strongly benefited from developing Asia's surge. China has become one of the region's main trade partners. Despite their benefits, strengthened trans-Pacific economic relations have also become a cause for concern in Latin America, due to major imbalances of different kinds. The purpose of this book is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to document the growing investment and trade relations between Latin America and Asia, as well as some of their imbalances. On the other hand, it provides several examples on how to upgrade trans-Pacific economic relations."

Book Synopsis North-South Linkages and International Macroeconomic Policy by : David Vines
Download or read book North-South Linkages and International Macroeconomic Policy written by David Vines and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-09-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have begun to apply economic techniques initially developed to analyse the industrialised countries to analyse North-South interactions in the world economy. This volume, derived from a CEPR conference, brings together theoretical and empirical papers on fiscal, monetary and trade linkages between the North and South. The papers use the advances in the use of the major macroeconomic models to simulate global and inter-regional interactions, and to analyse the implications for the South of macroeconomic developments in the North. They also examine international policy questions in a genuinely global context, and consider the design of policy packages for the Third World (aid versus trade, growth-oriented adjustment) in an empirical context. This volume provides a useful overview of the flourishing research area relating to interactions between North and South, and highlights areas where future research is needed.
Book Synopsis The Chinese in Vancouver, 1945-80 by : Wing Chung Ng
Download or read book The Chinese in Vancouver, 1945-80 written by Wing Chung Ng and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vancouver has one of the largest populations of Chinese in North America. In The Chinese in Vancouver, Wing Chung Ng captures the fascinating story of the city’s Chinese residents in their search for identity between 1945 and 1980. Ng also discusses the experiences of ethnic Chinese in various Southeast Asian countries and the United States, forcing a rethinking of "Chineseness" in the diaspora. Ng juxtaposes the cultural positions of different generations of Chinese immigrants and their Canadian-born descendants and unveils the ongoing struggle over the definition of being Chinese. Though not denying the reality of racism, Ng’s account gives the Chinese people their own voice and shows that the Chinese in Vancouver had much to say and often disagreed among themselves about the meaning of being Chinese.
Book Synopsis Growing a Soul for Social Change by : Tonya Huber-Warring
Download or read book Growing a Soul for Social Change written by Tonya Huber-Warring and published by IAP. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers new to the field of multicultural education and human relations education, the recency of these publications heralded as seminal may be confusing, for certainly the concepts building the field of multicultural education and human relations education have been around much longer. True. But, for the first time, we found the conceptual framework, guiding principles, and critical works across disciplines and fields in Smith's encyclopedic organization. Because of the comprehensive nature of Pritchy Smith's knowledge bases, they have been employed as the organizing themes for this volume. I would clarify that I have not burdened authors to study Smith’s analysis and then apply it to their works; the categorization is my own. And, as is true of any topic, the interpretation and application may be broadly applicable. One of my major goals in founding this series has been to further develop the knowledge bases with voices from those in the trenches (literally and figuratively) and at the chalkface—while proverbial for some parts of the world, chalk remains a teaching staple in many regions of the world. Throughout this volume, authors will explore and research their own discoveries on this journey—narratives of crossing cultures and developing communities, reconceptualizing democracy and reinterpreting traditions, seeking solidarity and sowing the seeds of social justice. Through critical reflection in the shade of these giants, the reader may discover Ming Fang’s bamboo tree.

Book Synopsis Reconstructions of Canadian Identity by : Vander Tavares
Download or read book Reconstructions of Canadian Identity written by Vander Tavares and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Re-envisioning multiculturalism in Canada In 1971, Canada became the first nation in the world to officially declare its bilingual and multicultural policies. Reconstructions of Canadian Identity examines what has changed over the past fifty years, highlighting the lived experiences of marginalized Canadians and offering insights into the critical work that lies ahead. Editors Vander Tavares and Maria João Maciel Jorge bring together a wide range of disciplines and perspectives to investigate inclusion and exclusion within the processes, discourses, and practices that forge and frame Canadian identity. Chapters analyze ways current multicultural policies continue to benefit the dominant groups and (further) harm minoritized ones. Exposing the pitfalls of established notions of Canadian identity, this volume moves traditionally othered identities—immigrant, racialized, hybridized, Indigenous, and women—to the forefront. In doing so, it reveals how these identities negotiate and claim legitimacy, arguing for a reconceptualization from the margins that truly fosters diversity and inclusion. Illustrating both the shortcomings of and possibilities for a more inclusive multiculturalism in Canada, Reconstructions of Canadian Identity invites readers to reflect on what it means to be Canadian in the twenty-first century.
