Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and the Empire OF the many interesting political and economic questions which have come to the front in the Opening years Of the twentieth century, one of the most fascinating is the future of Canada. It has captured the imagination Of mankind and aroused world-wide attention. It is not only of command ing interest in itself, but there is involved in it a much larger and more important question - the future of the British Empire. In the present eventful generation the whole range Of the civilised world has been undergoing profound changes, some caused by wars, some by peaceful revolu tions, but most of them by new developments of commerce and industry. NO nation or country has altogether escaped, and where on the surface they make the smallest Show they may underneath be the most active and disintegrating. A2 T he British E mpire in Transition. Great Britain, the head and heart of a mighty Empire once so stable and firm-rooted, is now plunging deeper and deeper in a vortex of new and strange movements. It is undergoing the most revolutionary changes in its long and eventful history - changes all the more dangerous for being little understood. They are least Of all understood by those who must bear the risk of them. Our Constitutional crises, our naval scares, and our electioneering contests are but the outward symptoms of profound organic unrest. The whole basis and groundwork Of the Empire are under going a Silent transformation. Its centre Of gravity is shifting and may not remain much longer within these Islands. Already London is in a much smaller degree the capital of the British Empire than it was in the infancy Of the colonies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and Her Relations to the Empire The British Empire has grown with great rapidity, and the relations between the Mother Country and the Colonies have been constantly changing. Canada is one of the oldest Colonies, and yet her history can only be said to fairly commence with the migration of the United Empire Loyalists at the close of the American Revolution in 1788. A little over one hundred years have elapsed, and how many changes have occurred! In 1784, the loyal exiles, who had lost everything by standing true to the Motherland, were practically wards of the State. Tools and other necessaries had to be provided by the Imperial Government, and for a time the population was necessarily fed, or partly fed, by rations distributed by Imperial officers. The Provision Lists of this date arc a most pathetic feature of our records, containing, as they do, the names of the very best and wealthiest classes of the old colonies-educated, refined, and law-abiding citizens, who had lost the savings of generations through their loyalty to the Empire. After this period came the establishment of Upper Canada as a Province under the Act of 175)1. This Act gave the people certain self-governing powers, hut provided for an irresponsible executive. With the growth of population and means came the desire for responsible government, and for the fuller control of local affairs. This came in 1840 with the Union of Upper and Lower Canada. In 1867, the Confederation of the l ominion was accomplished, and almost imperceptibly with the increased territory, population, and strength, Canada has acquired far greater powers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review of Recent Literature on the Subject of "the Relations of Canada to the Empire" Mr. Worsfold believes with Lord Sydenham of Combe, who writes the introduction, that the path of least resis tance along which we have been travelling in our instinctive search for some form of Imperial unity would have eventually ended in separation of the Dominions, but that the war has brought our great opportunity. For, in the first place, never again can we hope for so powerful and spontaneous an impulse to common action as in this time of stupendous common sacrifice, and, in the second place, never before have we seen so clearly what it might mean to preserve and develop one quarter of the habitable globe in the interests of these many peoples under one flag. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and Its Relations to the British Empire: An Address Permit me to ask - Have you reached a clear belief that the Empire should continue? Do you consider it has life which is so vital as a great civilizing force that you refuse to contemplate the world being deprived of its benefits Does it represent to you power and usefulness and efficiency in unselfish service, and have you grown into a conviction that it possesses such abiding value to those who are Within it, and to the world out side, that its members should perpetuate it in an indissolubleunion? Or have you thought of it as something that only may continue, that it is probably a passing development which will naturally break up into its constituent parts later, and that the possibility of such a result does not disturb you? Do you consider an autonomous Canada within the Empire our destiny Or do you think the destiny of Canada ulti mately is independence, or that measure of independence in which we will take care of ourselves and, untrammelled by definite obligations to others, exercise free choice as to our actions in foreign affairs? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada's Sons and Great Britain in the World War, Vol. 1 of 2: A Complete and Authentic History of the Commanding Part Played by Canada and the British Empire in the World's Greatest War To write a foreword for a book all the chapters of which one has not had an opportunity of reading seems a departure from one of the principles which has guided one's conduct since leaving Canada in September, 1914. But when asked to do so by the author I gladly acceded to his request, for I know him to be a true Canadian and one who has played a gallant part in the recent struggle. To me, it seems a good thing that soldiers like Colonel George Nasmith, C.M.G., should record what they themselves have seen on the battlefields of France and Flanders. Because it is almost impossible to recover the spirit of past years, official histories, though correct in fact, often lack the personal touch of the eyewitness. I therefore welcome this work, and confidently recommend it to the Canadian public. As Commander of the Canadian Corps the temptation is strong to take this opportunity to recount some of its doings, and to give an appreciation of the value of those achievements. But this is not the time nor the place to follow that inclination, rather let me attempt an appreciation of the man who made for the Canadian Corps whatever reputation it enjoys, the man whom the Germans liked the least and feared the most - the Canadian soldier. The gathering together as a fighting force of so many men from Canada, and the comparison of these men with other soldiers on the battlefields of Europe have impressed upon us the realization that a Canadian type of manhood has been evolved, by virtue of the admixture of races, the influence of environment, and the manner of life in our home-land. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada's Sons in the World War, Vol. 2 of 2: A Complete and Authentic History of the Commanding Part Played by Canada and the British Empire in the World's Greatest War The method adopted by General Nivelle, the hero of Verdun, was not that of the Somme. He decided that the whole Of the Aisne heights would be crushed in at the same time by one bold assault from west, south and southeast; the Rheims heights on the north would be carried at the same time, while his centre would be launched through the gap into the plain of Laon. Believing that an elementary text-book on history need not touch upon every event of the period treated, the author has not hesitated to omit all reference to many topics that should be fully treated in a book for more advanced students. The aim has been to touch only upon those events which are of primary importance, and especially upon those which can be invested with some degree of interest. As far as possible the bio graphical method has been adopted events have been grouped about great men. At the same time it has been kept in mind that the purpose of this book is to co-ordinate in the minds of pupils the knowledge they have, rather than to furnish them with additional information. As the title indicates, special stress has been laid upon the building and the progress of the Empire. The illustrations have been chosen with the greatest care and with the object of assisting in the understanding of the text. The author wishes to thank the many friends to whom he is indebted for information and suggestions. He is under special obligations to the officials of the Parliamentary Library of Canada. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Dominion of Canada In 1893 the governments Of the provinces unitedly contributed the sum Of two thousand dollars to cover the expense Of the undertaking, each paying in proportion to the number Of schools under its control. In July of that year the Dominion History Competition was opened. It was limited to British subjects who could produce satisfactory evidence Of literary ability. Though ninety persons volunteered, only forty-six were permitted to write. When the competition closed on July lst, 1895, fifteen had completed their task. The committee spent the next ten months in selecting the best manuscript, and this volume is the one to which it awarded the first place. It will be Observed that, while substantial prominence is given to important facts of a provincial character, the Object Of the author has been so to converge his narrative as to direct the mind of the reader to the federation of the provinces under the British North America Act Of 1867, and in this way unite the various currents Of provincial history into the broader channel Of the Dominion. There was in some respects a community of interests between the provinces even long before Confederation. Now, since they are happily united under one system of government, they share more intimately in a common destiny. To that union Of the interests, as well as Of the patriotic sentiments and aspirations Of all Canadians, attention is thoughtfully directed, with a view to impress upon our future citizens that we not only have a united country, but are a united people. It is to be hoped that the story of our Dominion, which in the following pages we believe is simply and faithfully told, will help to convey a fair and inspiring impression of the grandeur and importance Of the heritage committed to us as Canadians and as citizens Of the British Empire. At no more fitting time could this book be introduced to the schools of Canada than in this Jubilee year. The difficulties that stand in the way of forming such an incorporating organ of the life of the peoples of the British Empire are greater than those that attended the formation of any similar union now known to the world. The successful federation of the United States of America, the federation of the provinces of Canada, of the states of Australia, and of the provinces of South Africa, may, indeed, encourage us to seek for some practicable scheme of common government, consistent with the varying facts and circumstances of our life; but in the task of framing such a scheme there is little help, beyond the stimulus of example, to be got from the federal unions already in exist ence either within or without the limits of the Empire. The task of devising them was of a totally different kind from ours, and vastly less complicated in its character and conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Canada, Vol. 7 Although my labours have been generously and kindly noticed by many of the leading public journals of Great Britain, and attention has been forcibly directed to the volumes which have appeared, and I can acknowledge much sympathy and kindness in Canada in very many quarters, the work itself has in England been considered worthy of notice by an extremely limited number of those who have to safeguard the union of the component parts of the empire. I do not wish to sustain this remark by any statistical statement, but I may express the hope that the interest felt towards Canada and the recognition of her importance as the protagonist province of the outer empire of Great Britain, are in no way typified by the reception which these volumes have received in the mother country, which, in Canada, we still call, and long hope to call, Home.
