Book Synopsis The World in Guangzhou by : Gordon Mathews,
Download or read book The World in Guangzhou written by Gordon Mathews, and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only decades ago, the population of Guangzhou was almost wholly Chinese. Today, it is a truly global city, a place where people from around the world go to make new lives, find themselves, or further their careers. A large number of these migrants are small-scale traders from Africa who deal in Chinese goods—often knockoffs or copies of high-end branded items—to send back to their home countries. In The World in Guangzhou, Gordon Mathews explores the question of how the city became a center of “low-end globalization” and shows what we can learn from that experience about similar transformations elsewhere in the world. Through detailed ethnographic portraits, Mathews reveals a world of globalization based on informality, reputation, and trust rather than on formal contracts. How, he asks, can such informal relationships emerge between two groups—Chinese and sub-Saharan Africans—that don't share a common language, culture, or religion? And what happens when Africans move beyond their status as temporary residents and begin to put down roots and establish families? Full of unforgettable characters, The World in Guangzhou presents a compelling account of globalization at ground level and offers a look into the future of urban life as transnational connections continue to remake cities around the world.

Book Synopsis Mega-City Region Development in China by : Anthony G.O. Yeh
Download or read book Mega-City Region Development in China written by Anthony G.O. Yeh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-22 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the mega-city region development in China as a new form of urbanization which plays a crucial role in the economic development of the country. It examines the challenges faced by the mega-city regions and opens up avenues for debates and further research. Economic reform of 1978 has led to an unprecedented growth in the population and economic development of China. A large portion of this increased urban population and the corresponding economic growth has been concentrated in the mega-city regions, such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and Pearl River Delta (PRD). These three mega-city regions have less land but more people and thus higher economy, resulting in various issues and challenges faced by these regions. These challenges pertain to the socio-economic development, transport, environment, governance and development strategy, which this book explores through case studies of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Wuhan. This book also explains and analyses the economy, migration processes, transport development, environmental conditions and governance of the mega-city regions of China. With an overview of China’s rapid urbanisation and the consequent economic growth, this book provides an essential understanding of related issues in order to establish appropriate strategies and policies to sustain the process of mega-city region development.

Book Synopsis The Potential Effects and Mechanisms of Chinese Traditional Medicine on Bone Homeostasis and Remodeling by : Jun Liu
Download or read book The Potential Effects and Mechanisms of Chinese Traditional Medicine on Bone Homeostasis and Remodeling written by Jun Liu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease, strongly affecting postmenopausal women and characterized by an increased risk of bone fragility and a decrease in bone mass. Bone homeostasis requires a balance between bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts. When this balance is impaired, normal bone remodelling cannot keep bone mass stable, leading to osteopenia and osteoporosis. About 30–50% of all women in the world suffer from fractures due to osteoporosis throughout their lives. The treatments include improving metabolic abnormalities through complementary and alternative therapies, drug application and surgical therapy for the management of overweight, obesity and hormone metabolism disorder. Chinese traditional medicine has been increasingly considered as an effective therapy for osteoporosis. A series of formulae, herbs and natural products have been indicated for their effects in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, such as Liu-Wei-Di-Huang Wan (formula), Morindae Officinalis Radix (herb), Longspur epimedium glycoside (natural product). However, the mechanisms of action remain largely unexplored.
