This comprehensive, illustrated volume reconstructs the natural and human history of the parish, tracing its evolution from the earliest times of prehistory to the modern era. Betsy Swanson spotlights the areas early Indian life and archaeological sites and historic landmarks, extinct and extant, and the roles they played in the progress of the region. Colorful historical figures who appear in these pages include the pirate Jean Lafitte, revolutionary Nicolas Chauvin de la Frenire, and the reclusive philanthropist John McDonogh. Historic Jefferson Parish also features a treasure trove of early sketches, rare maps, and vintage photographs.

This book was released on 2021-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Antoine is emblematic of countless enslaved people whose lives and contributions have been overlooked. Antoine, the enslaved gardener of Oak Alley Plantation, was the first person to successfully propagate the pecan tree yet he exists only as a footnote in the bigger story of Oak Alley Plantation. His pioneering work enabled large groves of trees to be planted creating a lucrative commercial crop and though his horticultural achievement has long been legend, virtually nothing is known about his life. Historian Katy Morales Shannon utilizes extensive research and period documents to expose his story and explore the lives of the enslaved community in which he lived. The life of this truly revolutionary enslaved man is revealed through the lives of his family and friends, the community they built, and the bonds they forged during their enslavement and their life as free people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of an artillery unit and its role in the Civil War, at Vicksburg and beyond, with photos, maps, and illustrations. The celebrated Chicago Mercantile Battery was organized by the Mercantile Association, a group of prominent Chicago merchants, and mustered into service in August of 1862. The Chicagoans would serve in many of the Western theater’s most prominent engagements until the war ended in the spring of 1865. The battery accompanied Gen. William T. Sherman during his operations against Vicksburg as part of the XIII Corps under Gen. Andrew Jackson Smith. The artillerists performed well throughout the campaign at such places as Chickasaw Bluff, Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Big Black River, and the siege operations of Vicksburg. Ancillary operations included the reduction of Arkansas Post, Fort Hindman, Milliken’s Bend, Jackson, and many others. After reporting to Gen. Nathaniel Banks, commander of the Department of the Gulf, the Chicago battery transferred to New Orleans and ended up taking part in Banks’s disastrous Red River Campaign in Louisiana. The battery was almost wiped out at Sabine Crossroads, where it was overrun after hand-to-hand fighting. Almost two dozen battery men ended up in Southern prisons. Additional operations included expeditions against railroads and other military targets. Chicago’s Battery Boys is based upon many years of primary research and extensive travel by the author through Illinois, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Richard Williams skillfully weaves contemporary accounts by the artillerists themselves into a rich and powerful narrative that is sure to please the most discriminating Civil War reader. “Measures up to the standard of excellence set for this genre by the late John P. Pullen back in 1957 when he authored The Twentieth Maine: A Volunteer Regiment in the Civil War.” —Edwin C. Bearss, from the Foreword

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mississippi River played a decisive role in the American Civil War. The Confederate fortifications that controlled the lower Mississippi valley were put to the test in the lengthy Federal campaign of 1862-63. Vicksburg was a fortress city, known as the 'Gibraltar of the Confederacy', whose capture was seen as the key to victory in the war. This book explores the fortifications of the river valley, focusing on Vicksburg and its defences which boasted a network of forts, rifle pits and cannon embrasures surrounding the city, a well as examining the strengths and weaknesses of the fortifications when under siege. Also examined are numerous other fortified strongholds, including New Orleans, Port Hudson, New Madrid, and forts Henry and Donelson, all lavishly illustrated with full-colour artwork and cutaways.

Book excerpt: Jimmy Mason was a good kid in a tough city. New Orleans in the '70s was a town where good and evil not only strove for dominion, but regularly rubbed elbows. Tragedy in the lives of good people were often the fruit of this unholy coexistence. Such was the heartbreaking scenario that led Jimmy and his widowed mother to the mountains of north Alabama with the hope of starting a new life. One would have expected that Jimmy, a highly recruited high school athlete, would have had a better than average chance at thriving in his new environment. Unfortunately, evil is unconstrained by city limits or even by geographic borders and the young man once again finds himself confronted by the worst society has to offer. This story, the result of investigation and research by a Jefferson Parish character referred to locally as "Easy," grabs a snapshot out of Jimmy's heart, character, and life at a point at which the boy progresses into manhood.
