Book excerpt: In three provocative and thoughtful essays, Coosje van Bruggen traces Baldessari's gradual shift from the creation of imagist mind games in the 1960s, through his intellectual analyses of social codes in the late 1970s and early 1980s, to an emphasis on psychological and emotional content in the late 1980s. In addition, the texts provide a chronological overview of the artist's career and a penetrating study of the use of narrative and dream structure in the work of the 1970s and '80s... Over 400 illustrations document Baldessari's extensive oeuvre and include four artist's projects commissioned for this publication, as well as special pieces created for the book jacket and endpapers, a reflection of Baldessari's interest in books as art. A comprehensive exhibition history, including films and videotapes--previously not compiled--a bibliography, and an index, complete the publication. --From jacket.

Book excerpt: The brash young artist James Ensor painted Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889 during a period of extraordinary artistic and political fomentation in his native Belgium. It is one of the most dazzling, innovative, and perplexing paintings created in Europe in the late nineteenth century, rivaling any work of its period in audacity and ambition. Huge in scale, complex in design and execution, and brimming with social commentary, the startling canvas presents a scene filled with clowns, masked figures, and--barely visible amid the swirling crowds--the tiny figure of Christ on a donkey entering the city of Brussels. This insightful volume examines the painting in light of Belgium's rich artistic, social, political, and theological debates in the late nineteenth century, and in the context of James Ensor's exceptional career, in order to decipher some of the painting's messages and meanings.

Book excerpt: This career-spanning exhibition catalog reveals the enormous artistic achievements--both individual and shared--of two of the greatest pioneers of twentieth-century modernism. Featuring more than two hundred and fifty works, including paintings, photographs, drawings, textiles and furniture, this essential volume traces the creative development of Josef and Anni Albers--both instrumental figures in the development of modernism and abstract art. Illustrated profusely throughout, this book features contributions from leading experts in chapters exploring the couple's relationship and important aspects of their professional partnership, including their meeting at the Bauhaus School and their influential years at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Wide-ranging essays examine topics such as the influence of Pre-Colombian art; Josef's masterwork Homage to the Square; Anni's jewelry and works on paper; Josef's famed classes at Yale University; and Anni's years as a graphic designer after her husband's death. Both artists are celebrated for their lasting achievements in their respective fields--Josef for his color theory classes at Yale, Anni for her innovative use of unconventional materials. Readers will come away with an appreciation for the Albers' experimentation and innovation; their collaboration and teamwork; their dedication to education and mentorship; and the many ways their work challenged

Book excerpt: Artist, educator, curator, and critic Luis Camnitzer has been writing about contemporary art ever since he left his native Uruguay in 1964 for a fellowship in New York City. As a transplant from the "periphery" to the "center," Camnitzer has had to confront fundamental questions about making art in the Americas, asking himself and others: What is "Latin American art"? How does it relate (if it does) to art created in the centers of New York and Europe? What is the role of the artist in exile? Writing about issues of such personal, cultural, and indeed political import has long been an integral part of Camnitzer's artistic project, a way of developing an idiosyncratic art history in which to work out his own place in the picture. This volume gathers Camnitzer's most thought-provoking essays—"texts written to make something happen," in the words of volume editor Rachel Weiss. They elaborate themes that appear persistently throughout Camnitzer's work: art world systems versus an art of commitment; artistic genealogies and how they are consecrated; and, most insistently, the possibilities for artistic agency. The theme of "translation" informs the texts in the first part of the book, with Camnitzer asking such questions as "What is Latin America, and who asks the question? Who is the artist, there and here?" The texts in the second section are more historically than geographically oriented, exploring little-known moments, works, and events that compose the legacy that Camnitzer draws on and offers to his readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue accompanied the first American museum retrospective of the English artist Francis Bacon. In his essay, Senior Curator Lawrence Alloway explores the essence of Bacon's painting beyond the usual associations with the grotesque. Instead, he offers a different argument: Bacon was a realist painter of his time, closely tied into the Grand Manner and painters such as Manet, Van Gogh, Velasquez, and Titian. Bacon continued and evolved the central tradition of European figure painting at a time when abstraction was dominating the art world. Also included are an exhibition checklist, 64 color and black-and-white reproductions, and a bibliography.

Book excerpt: Mexican multimedia artist Gabriel de la Mora (born 1968) is best known for constructing visual works from obsolete found objects such as eggshells and discarded shoes. De la Mora describes these objects that have outlived their usefulness as caches for historical information about everyday life. In his exhibition at The Drawing Center, De la Mora presents an installation of 55 pairs of found speaker screens. Each screen is imprinted with an inscription created by the dust and air that circulated through the speaker screen during its useful life recording the cadence of countless voices, advertisements, news broadcasts, soap operas, football games and music, as well as noise, interference and silence. This volume accompanies De la Mora's Drawing Center presentation and features images of the installation and essays on his work.

Book excerpt: This is the second publication from the ongoing research series, Global Art and the Museum (GAM), which was initiated in 2001 by German art historian Hans Belting and artist, writer and curator Peter Weibel at the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. The last 20 years have seen a rapid globalization of the art world, resulting in geographic decentralization and a shift away from a primarily Western perspective. GAM's aim is to analyze the effect of these changes on the art market, museums and art criticism. This volume comprises a collection of essays by experts--such as Claude Ardouin, Keeper of the African Section of London's British Museum, Koeki Claessens, Director of Central Africa's Royal Museum and Eugene Tan, Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore--who presented at the 2007 conference.
