Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Camera Crusade Through the Holy Land The wars carried on by the Christian nations of the West from the eleventh to the latter half of the thirteenth century for the conquest of Palestine were called Crusades, from the Portuguese word cruzado, that is, marked with the cross, because the warriors who followed the holy banner wore the sign of the cross. In 1901 I started for the Holy Land with my ever-faithful camera on my back, my only weapon, simply to journey through the land with a desire to see for myself places men tioned in the Bible, to study ancient customs which still remain, and if possible to understand the significance of many sentences in the Scriptures which were very obscure to me and to those who tried to teach me; in fact, my faith was wavering, I was in doubt, yet one verse in Matthew compelled me to go: Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Book Synopsis The Architecture of the Christian Holy Land by : Kathryn Blair Moore
Download or read book The Architecture of the Christian Holy Land written by Kathryn Blair Moore and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the absence of the bodies of Christ and Mary, architecture took on a special representational role during the Christian Middle Ages, marking out sites associated with the bodily presence of the dominant figures of the religion. Throughout this period, buildings were reinterpreted in relation to the mediating role of textual and pictorial representations that shaped the pilgrimage experience across expansive geographies. In this study, Kathryn Blair Moore challenges fundamental ideas within architectural history regarding the origins and significance of European recreations of buildings in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Nazareth. From these conceptual foundations, she traces and re-interprets the significance of the architecture of the Holy Land within changing religious and political contexts, from the First Crusade and the emergence of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land to the anti-Islamic crusade movements of the Renaissance, as well as the Reformation.

Download or read book Hamidian Palestine written by Johann Büssow and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-08-11 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the era of Sultan Abdülhamid II, modern state institutions were established in Palestine, while national identities had not yet developed. Hamidian Palestine explores how the inhabitants of the Ottoman District of Jerusalem interacted with each other and how they organised their interests in a historical moment before ‘Arabs’ and ‘Jews’ emerged as the central political categories in the country. Based on a wide range of Arabic, Turkish and Hebrew sources, the book examines the social and political relations of Palestinians from a wide variety of perspectives. By situating individual case studies within larger contexts such as modernisation, regionalisation and state-building, it allows Palestinian society to be compared with other local societies within the Ottoman Empire and beyond.
