Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Cambridge Sermons IT was Professor Mayor's usual practice, after preaching in his College Chapel or the 'university Church, to print the sermon, with abundant annotations, and distribute copies among his friends: Twelve of these sermons are here reprinted, just as he issued theml, with all the notes and all the quotations. Neither could be spared. If the notes are an embellishment, the quotations are of the very tissue of the work. Mayor delivered the utterance of other men with much more emphasis and expression than he could bring himself to put into his own, and even when he used the same passage a second time, there was always something in the setting that gave it distinction. The business of the editor has merely been to select and see through the Press such discourses as exhibit in clearest light the preacher's mind at different stages in his long ministry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Sermons: Preached Before the University But now, on re-reading the manuscript, it ap peared to me that, at this interval of time, I might be able to convince the few who might be interested in being convinced, that, at least in its general tenor, the sermon was not of a nature to set class against class moreover, some parts of the sermon seemed to me to com mend a tendency to Reform, which, however on the increase, still requires much inculcation before it is likely to attain its due force. For these rea sons I have ventured to publish the manuscript, although it covers, to some extent, the same ground as is covered by the Sermon on Work, preached at Cambridge in the following year. I must add that the Westminster Abbey Sermon was written to be spoken, not to be read; though revised, it contains several abrupt expressions and rhetorical terms scarcely adapted for reading. But however it may be aesthetically faulty, it con tains nothing of which I am morally ashamed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Sermons: Preached Before the University of Cambridge, in the Month of November 1853 Psalm cxix. 9. "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? even by ruling himself after Thy word." The Psalm from which, I have taken these words is remarkable not only as being by far the longest of the collection, but also for features of a more important kind. St. Augustine tells us, that in expounding the Psalter, he put off the consideration of this Psalm to the last, not only on account of its length, but also on account of its exceeding depth: he tells us, moreover, that when urged to undertake the exposition he still shrank from the task, because as often as he began to meditate upon it, he still perceived that it exceeded his utmost powers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Sermons, Preached Before the University of Cambridge: Including the Dulsean Lectures for 1853; And Two Other Sermons At no time perhaps can it be said that either of these methods, the bold Offering battle to the hosts Of the Lord, or the secret ambush and the stirring up Of rebellion in the camp, will be ex elusively resorted to. There is always, alas! Sufficient encouragement for both in the perverse ness and waywardness Of man; but one or the other will prevail more, be more apparent, accord ing as circumstances seem to favour its success. There have been times when infidelity has reared its head in insolent boldness to ridicule the Book Divine, wherein God's will is revealed to us; when the character of the blessed Redeemer has been calumniated, and the devil's agents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Destiny of the Creature: And Other Sermons; Preached Before the University of Cambridge To the younger members, then, more especially, of that ancient and illustrious body which I have been appointed to address, I desire earnestly and affection ately to commend these thoughts. There is much in them with which the young will perhaps readily sympathize. There is a speculative tone which is often distasteful to those who are preoccupied with, what are called, the realities of life, but which rarely fails to interest, and, I most religiously believe, to edify, those on whom the morning sun of life has not yet ceased to shine. To the young, then, - yet not to the young only, - to the generous, the pure, and the thoughtful among us, I humbly dedicate these sermons, with earnest prayer to Almighty God, that His blessing may go with them, and out of their very weakness and imperfection, may perfect His glory and His praise.
