Book excerpt: Clayton Terrell is stunned upon receipt of the news that his cousin and fellow U.S. Marshal assigned to investigate a string of stagecoach robberies has been shot and killed for cheating in a card game. Knowing there is more to this tale, Clayton leaves New York and travels west to the sprawling mining town of Defiance, Colorado, in search of answers. In the final leg of his journey, he finds himself in a stagecoach with only one other passenger, a beautiful young woman, when it is held up by outlaws. Clayton is now faced with more unanswered questions. What had his cousin discovered that resulted in his death? Were the stagecoach robberies linked in some way? And could the passionate and headstrong beauty sharing his stage be involved somehow in the deception? Before long, Clayton finds himself the targets of an organized web of evil and deceit that has the whole town hopelessly cowering in fear. Now Clayton must fight to uncover the head of the gang running roughshod over the good folk of Defiance before he loses his life or that of the stunning courageous girl he cannot help but protect even as she continues to turn Clayton’s world upside down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores in depth the origins, development, and prospects of outlawry and of the relationship of outlaws to the social conditions of changing times. Throughout American history you will find larger-than-life brigands in every period and every region. Often, because we hunger for simple justice, we romanticize them to the point of being unable to separate fact from fiction. Frank Richard Prassel brings this home in a thorough and fascinating examination of the concept of outlawry from Robin Hood, Dick Turpin, and Blackbeard through Jean Lafitte, Pancho Villa, and Billy the Kid to more modern personalities such as John Dillinger, Claude Dallas, and D. B. Cooper. A separate chapter on molls, plus equal treatment in the histories of gangs, traces women's involvement in outlaw activities. Prassel covers the folklore as well as the facts, even including an appendix of ballads by and about outlaws. He makes clear how this motley group of bandits, pirates, highwaymen, desperadoes, rebels, hoodlums, renegades, gangsters, and fugitives—who stand tall in myth—wither in the light of truth, but flourish in the movies. As he tells the stories, there is little to confirm that Jesse and Frank James, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the Daltons, Pretty Boy Floyd, Ma Barker, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, Belle Starr, the Apache Kid, or any of the so-called good badmen, did anything that did not enrich or otherwise benefit themselves. But there is plenty of evidence, in the form of slain victims and ruined lives, to show how many ways they caused harm. The Great American Outlaw is as much an excellent survey on the phenomenon as it is a brilliant exposition of the larger than-life figures who created it. Above all, it is a tribute to that aspect of humanity that Americans admire most and that Prassel describes as a willingness "to fight, however hopelessly, against exhibitions of privilege."

Book excerpt: Jeff Malone had no interest in the outlaw Jonas Grigg until their paths accidentally crossed. Then, partly out of self-preservation and partly because of an atrocity performed by the outlaws, he led an army patrol against them. The gang is smashed but Grigg narrowly escapes and those who antagonized him are marked for death. Tracing Malone to Rocky Creek, Grigg gathers a new gang with the dual purpose of killing his old enemy and robbing the town bank. When an acquaintance of Malone is murdered and mysterious gunmen appear the outlook seems ominous indeed.Malone must find Grigg's hideout and destroy him if he's to ever remove the threat of the outlaw and his vengeance.

Book excerpt: Bill Doolin was perhaps the last great American outlaw of the nineteenth century. Once part of the Doolin-Dalton gang, he rode and robbed in the wild Indian Territory that would become Oklahoma. The Daltons were eventually shot to ribbons in their failed attempt to rob two banks at once in Coffeyville, Kansas. But Doolin went on to form a new gang that included notables such as Bitter Creek Newcomb, Black Face Charlie Pierce, a remaining Dalton brother, and the Rose of the Cimarron, Rose Dunn, sister of the notorious Dunn Brothers. Pursuing the gang was a tenacious group of U.S. marshals led by the famed Bill Tilghman. Doolin was considered something of a Robin Hood to the locals—everybody but those he robbed and killed. The marshals were determined to end his reign of terror no matter how long it took. The country, after all, was heading into a new century, and outlaws like Doolin no longer had a place in the West.

Book excerpt: In the 1800s, Tulare County, California, was a hotbed of desperate characters whose deadly gunplay and murderous inclinations left a trail of bodies across the region. Although the Central Valley now makes its name in agriculture, Tulare County was once a bastion of the Wild West with a lineup of hardened criminals that has scarcely been equaled in the annals of crime. Train bandits, coldblooded murderers and callous outlaws armed with shotguns and butcher knives plagued Visalia, Porterville and other sleepy central California towns. Join historian and retired Visalia Police captain Terry Ommen as he relates the transgressions of Tulare County's roughest characters, including thrilling tales of the pistol-packing Mason-Henry Gang, a deadly duel between politically divided journalists and vigilante justice exacted by angry mobs.

Sonnichsen's "grass-roots" history here pays off in one of the most interesting contributions ever made to the story of frontier life. The author had treated the Mitchell-Truit feud in his "Ten Texas feuds" but found this story particularly interesting. For years he continued his investigations through dozens and dozens of personal interviews so that he could piece the story together in full and in detail. The result is a book about how it was to be that relatively common person of the American West - the outlaw, hiding for years under alias but trying to live a family life. The feud which developed between the friendly Mitchell and Truit families suddenly erupted into violence and killing on a road in Mitchell's Bend. Then followed trials, the death of a teen-age boy, and the hanging of Cooney Mitchell - and the avenging murder of James Truit by Bill Mitchell. For thirty years after the murder, Bill Mitchell, alias Baldy Russell, lived the life of an outlaw in Texas and New Mexico. He married, reared a family, had friends but few neighbors, constantly prepared for the time he knew would come. When it came, his capture was swift and ingenious. Then came years of trials, jails, prison and "escape," a continuing running from the law until his death. In putting down this one full account of an outlaw, C. L. Sonnichsen has achieved an outstanding contribution to Americana. The book is enriched by many pictures from private sources."

Book excerpt: Whether seen as a common criminal or Robin Hood with a six-shooter, the Missouri outlaw left an indelible mark on American culture. In the nineteenth century, Missouri was known as the "Outlaw State" and offered a list of lawbreakers like Jesse James, Bloody Bill Anderson, Belle Starr and Cole Younger. These notorious criminals became folk legends in countless books, movies and television shows. Author Paul Kirkman traces the succession of Missouri's first few generations and how each contributed to the making of some of the most notorious outlaws and lawmen in American history.
