Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive book to aid the gardener in making a start with native plants. It takes the gardener through the beginning steps of identifying native plants, evaluating them in relation to conventional garden materials, and learning detailed techniques of propagation and culture. Annuals, perennials (including ferns), bulbs, shrubs and trees are included--with about 350 species treated in detail, and many others included in charts and listings for quick reference. A few California native plants have been in cultivation for a hundred years or so, but widespread consciousness of natives is relatively recent. It has arisen partly because of the recent drought, which natives survived more readily than exotics, and partly because of growing awareness that many natives have become rare or endangered, and may be preserved and perpetuated by cultivation for their ornamental qualities. The book is in full accord with the new trend in landscaping in which the environment, climate, and restricted water supplies are taken into account--not only for gardens but also for parks, roadside plantings, and other large-scale landscaping. Because propagation and cultural methods for many native plants have never been recorded, the author spent years gathering information through correspondence. She has also had personal experience in growing natives for more than 30 years. The result is the first complete, practical, convenient guide for growing native plants. It will be essential for the experienced gardener and the beginner alike.

Book excerpt: First published thirty years ago, the long-awaited second edition of Growing California Native Plants is the ideal hands-on native plant guide for both experienced and novice gardeners. In addition to the voluminous knowledge contributed by Marjorie G. Schmidt, now deceased, Katherine L. Greenberg has taken note of the vibrant state of today’s horticultural scene, adding plants and ideas that were little known when the book first appeared. Lavishly illustrated with 200 new color photographs, drawings, maps, and charts, this concise and easy-to-use reference covers trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulbs, grasses, and vines, and includes a plant selection guide for quick reference. The authors, whose combined experience spans six decades, take California’s summer-dry climate and restricted water supplies into account and provide helpful notes on companion plants and gardening with wildlife. Practical and informative, Growing California Native Plants is a valuable reference for gardeners everywhere in California and an enjoyable book simply to explore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Before going into the steps for planting a California native garden, I'll first answer a more basic question: Why plant a California native garden? Then, I'll tell you step-by-step exactly how to do it. If you’re interested in saving money, helping the environment, and adding beauty to your life, then please keep reading! MEET THE AUTHOR Tom teaches creative writing, composition, and journalism at the Academy of Art University. Besides tending to his own California native garden, he enjoys hiking and home brewing. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Once you’ve consulted with your local nursery on the best matches for your soil, drainage and sunlight, it’s time to plant your natives. Remember this rule: do not overplant. It’s very tempting for beginning gardeners to stuff a space full of native flowers, shrubs and bushes. But most of the work happens underground, and natives need room for their roots to spread and grow, as well as some space for air to circulate. Also: natives grow at different rates and to different sizes. For example, the gorgeous and fragrant flowers of the hummingbird sage will definitely have your garden humming with their namesake, but the plant grows fast and can overrun an area extremely quickly. Most beginning native gardeners will be planting from pots, not from seed, so be sure to break up the root ball. If the native has been sitting in a pot for awhile, you’ll need to loosen the soil around the roots, and the roots themselves, to encourage growth. Buy a copy to continue reading!

Book excerpt: A must-have for every gardener in California looking for a new way to garden in a changing climate In recent years California has been facing extreme drought, and in 2015 they passed state-wide water restrictions that affect home owners. Unfortunately the drought is only going to get worse, and gardeners who aren’t willing to abandon their beloved pastime entirely are going to have to learn how to garden with the absolute minimum of water. The Drought-Defying California Garden highlights the best 230 plants to grow, shares advice on how to get them established, and offers tips on how to maintain them with the minimum amount of water. All of the plants are native to California—making them uniquely adept at managing the harsh climate—and include perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, and succulents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first month-by-month guide to gardening with native plants in a state that follows a unique, nontraditional seasonal rhythm. Beginning in October, when much of California leaves the dry season behind and prepares for its own green "spring," Helen Popper provides detailed, calendar-based information for both beginning and experienced native gardeners. Each month’s chapter lists gardening tasks, including repeated tasks and those specific to each season. Popper offers planting and design ideas, and explains core gardening techniques such as pruning, mulching, and propagating. She tells how to use native plants in traditional garden styles, including Japanese, herb, and formal gardens, and recommends places for viewing natives. An essential year-round companion, this beautifully written and illustrated book nurtures the twin delights of seeing wild plants in the garden and garden plants in the wild.

Book excerpt: Anyone who has moved inland from coastal areas, or anyone who has read the books, blog posts and articles based on coastal-California gardening, soon discovers that it's a different story once you try to establish a native-based garden in the Great Central or other inland valleys, or up into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Not quite Mediterranean, not quite desert, with different soils, monocrop agriculture, and different weather patterns, our inland valleys and foothills can nonetheless be home to some of the best California gardens that conserve precious resources like water and time, increase habitat, encourage native species, and look beautiful. Mixing inspiration with practical advice, this primer, organized around the major topis of "Designing," "Planting," "Maintaining," and "Plants and Special Uses," can help property owners and managers suceed in creating great inland and foothill California gardens.
