One of the main goals of these tests is to study energy reconstruction in the complex interface region between the electromagnetic. hadronic, and forward calorimeters at. 1 - 3.2. These detectors were exposed to beams of electrons and pions with energies ranging from 6 GeV to 200 GeV. Three methods of calibration in the electromagnetic end-cap calorimeter (EMEC) are studied and compared to the results of a previous beam test. of the EMEC. The electromagnetic scale factor (aEM) is computed and compared to the previous beam test value. Studies of the energy response and resolution of the high pseudorapidity region of the three end-cap calorimeters to the particle beam position scans are given.

This signature provides unique sensitivity to the production of theoretical lepton-partners, sleptons. These particles are a feature of supersymmetric theories, which seek to address unanswered questions in nature. The signature searched for in this thesis is difficult to identify, and in fact, this is the first time it has been probed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It covers a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. This thesis describes the special reconstruction and identification algorithms used to select leptons with large impact parameters and the details of the background estimation. The results are consistent with background, so limits on slepton masses and lifetimes in this model are calculated at 95% CL, drastically improving on the previous best limits from the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP).

Book excerpt: The anticipated range of particle energies at the LHC, coupled with the need for precision, low noise calorimetry makes severe demands on the dynamic range of the calorimeter readout. A common approach to this problem is to use shapers with two or more gain scales. In this paper, the authors describe their experience with a new approach in which a preamplifier with dynamic gain compression is used. An unavoidable consequence of dynamic gain adjustment is that the peaking time of the shaper output signal becomes amplitude dependent. The authors have carried out a test of such a readout system in the RD3 calorimeter, a liquid argon device with accordion geometry. The calibration system is used to determine both the gain of the individual channels as well as to map the shape of the waveform as a function of signal amplitude. A new procedure for waveform analysis, in which the fitted parameters describe the impulse response of the system, permits a straightforward translation of the calibration waveform to the waveform generated by a particle crossing the ionization gap. They find that the linearity and resolution of the calorimeter is equivalent to that obtained with linear preamplifiers, up to an energy of 200 GeV.

Modern particle physics experiments build detectors called Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) that detect the products of neutrino interactions. Due to various processes that take place within the detector, the data that comes out of these detectors ends up being distorted; various calibration techniques are necessary to ensure that the data is accurate and undistorted. All of these aspects of LArTPCs are complex on their own, let alone when they are all occurring in tandem. In this paper I will describe the basic principles behind LArTPC operation and data collection, and the calibration techniques that are carried out in the detector. I will also provide a brief comparison of various data from several of the more recent LArTPC experiments. This description of basic principles may prove useful to people who are familiarizing themselves with LArTPC experiments as part of their research endeavors.
