Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calendar of Treasury Papers, 1697-1701-2: Preserved in Her Majesty's Public Record Office The Calendar of the Treasury Papers, of which the present volume is the continuation, extends from 1 January 1697, to the close of the reign of King William the Third, viz. 8 March 1701-2. Attention having been drawn to the general nature of this Collection of Papers in the preface to the preceding volume, nothing more need here be said on that subject; but as some of the papers appear to the editor to be worthy of more especial regard, they are, in conformity with the plan adopted in that preface, here noticed under similar heads. The minutes found in the Minute Books applicable to the papers hereafter calendared have, as in the former volume, been added. It will be seen that the index has been prepared upon a different method to that in the previous volume, the object being to lead the enquirer more directly to the precise entry in the Calendar; besides which the reference in the index without turning to the Calendar at all, will be sufficient for the production of the document, by the officer in chaise of the papers.
