With no apparent clues and a seemingly fruitless autopsy, Angus is determined to uncover the truth behind the mysterious death. Meanwhile, local Weyport resident, Caleb Townsend, carries a secret of his own. Torn between his Amish upbringing and his newfound freedom, he stumbles upon a connection between the deceased and his distant sister, Rachel--who as it happens, was the last person to see the chiropractor alive. But when Rachel suddenly disappears from the very Amish community Caleb turned his back on, matters become more complicated for both him and Angus. As Caleb sets out to find his sister before Angus does, confronting his past and his estranged family along the way, Angus discovers there may be more to the case than meets the eye. And as the facade of perfection slowly crumbles, more victims turn up dead... This suspenseful murder mystery will keep you guessing until the very end. Caleb's Cross is book 3 in the Angus Reid Mysteries Series

Book excerpt: Dear Friends, This beautifully illustrated coloring book includes 100 drawings of woodland designs. It will take you into a magical world for hours and hours of relaxation and enjoyment. This one is purposely designed with the artwork on the left so there will be a blank page across from it where you can write your thoughts, prayers or sketch your own drawings. The title is called "The Caleb Tree." Caleb in the bible represented a man full of courage who was willing to believe that God was bigger than his circumstances and there is a beautiful scripture verse about the tree. "He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does he prospers. How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in his law he meditates day and night." Psalm 1:1-3 Every page has scripture verses to bring life, hope, and encouragement. I actually use the book every single day and say them aloud. It is one of the most powerful ways to pray. In addition, this book is the first of the coloring books to be a hard cover book. It is meant to be a keepsake and a reminder of God's great love for you. These are all original drawings and my hope is that they will be a fun adventure as you work on them. You will find some of them very detailed and will provide hours' worth of enjoyment and others that are simple and take only a few minutes. There is something for everyone! Blessings to all and God bless! From my heart to yours... Bonnie McPhail

Book excerpt: Caleb's War is a narrative about the tribulations of Sergeant Caleb Johnson, a farmer from the Shenandoah Valley who volunteered to serve in the Stonewall Brigade to stop the Yanks invading eastern Virginia. As Caleb fought at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, the reader will experience the gamut of emotions as he dealt with military and platoon issues and family concerns on the farm. The book is a plethora of information on the Civil War. The reader will learn about the filthy living conditions in camp, weapons, food preparation, diseases, generals, medicine, and terror and chaos of battle. A major theme throughout the book is the overpowering religious convictions of the soldiers, especially those from the South: reading the Bible, praying, and singing hymns such as "Amazing Grace" were common behaviors. Soldiers prayed before and during each battle imploring God to intervene on their behalf. Wounded warriors begged their Lord for forgiveness and end their agony and take them to his kingdom. The reader will gain a unique perspective of the battles as they first experience horrific happenings through the eyes of Sergeant Caleb Johnson, and then they join Union Private Josef Volzek and see what he perceived and underwent. The reader will be drawn into the story and feel what the soldiers endured: fear, bloodshed, smoke, terror, loss, noise, and chaos. Caleb's War is also a testimonial to all veterans. In the annals of warfare, there are no braver warriors than the men and several hundred women who served in the ranks of the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War; their courage and bravery is above reproach. Veterans are the men and women who answered our nation's call during a crisis. They remain a national treasure and merit our profoundest remembrance, respect, and support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a commentary in the form of a journal. It is meant to be something like a diary kept by a tourist or a spy of his travels in a strange land, recording questions and observations and opinions on everything he sees for other travelers on the same road. It could be also called a dialogue because the author records the conversation that he has with Genesis as he moves along, and the conversation he has with himself in the privacy of his motel room. In both ways it is the account of a journey with the idea that it may be of some use to others traveling the same road. The author is writing as an amateur to other amateurs. He is not a professional theologian nor a biblical scholar, and while his intent is to think as deeply and truly as he can, he is not doing so as a professional. There are several advantages that an amateur may have over a professional in a case like this. First the amateur can be much bolder in what he questions and in the answers he considers. The professional always has something on the line, always something at risk, namely his reputation. He cannot venture far off the beaten path without being in some danger of losing his respectability. The amateur, on the other hand, has little respectability to lose and little reputation to risk. What Dr. Boswell would not be able to risk in mathematical writing he can be quite at liberty to risk in this project. It can be exhilarating. Secondly the amateur has a much friendlier connection with the average reader. The amateur is something of an equal with the average reader, though presumably with something to say worth the hearing. Since they are introduced as equals, the reader can feel safer, less threatened, more entitled to join in the conversation that the author is trying to create. With a professional author there is always the sense of obligation that one should not argue back with the scholar; only another scholar has the credentials to join in their conversation, and the rest of us must sort it all out as best we can. But with this book there is no need of restraint; anyone can be drawn in to the discussion, anyone can feel entitled to disagree, with impunity. It can be exhilarating. This book is not meant to be a "Bible made simple" book. It is written by someone who loves to think and is written for others who love to think. It is written by someone who is not timid about difficult questions and is written for others who have no fear of such things. But most of all it is a book written for the pure joy of the thing and for those who might share that joy.

Flames are climbing the walls of a manor near Chesapeake Bay, where eleven-year-old Emily Spencer lives with her doting parents. Emilys parents are injured in their attempt to rescue her from the fire. Unable to care for their daughter, the Spencers set in motion the events that will change Emilys life forever. They ask friends to find their estranged son, Edward, so that he may take care of Emily. Just before the fire, Edward had asked the lovely Providence Montgomery to join and marry him in the Northwest Territory. The young woman decides to take Emily with her on an arduous journey into the unknown. Emilys nanny urges her son, Andy, who was born into slavery, to accompany them. As oxen-drawn wagons pull them away from everything they hold dear, the three discover a land where danger lurks and where plans take on a life of their own. Torn between poignant memories and the terror of an unexpected encounter, Emily strikes a bargain with Goda bargain that later haunts her. Who can help her find the direction she so desperately seeks? In this frontier of melting snow and mysterious forests, author Shirley Emmett weaves a lively tale of hope, dreams, and a literal and figurative journey of faith.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2013 Saltire Society Scottish First Book award. Edinburgh. 1898. On the cusp of the modern age. Caleb George Cash: mountaineer, geographer, antiquarian and teacher stands at the rocky summit of Arthur's Seat. This is the story of Caleb, me and the Scottish mountains visible from Arthur's Seat. Somehow the Cashs or the Calebs didn't sound right so I have called the hills on Caleb's list The Arthurs. More than just a climbing book this is the story of a survivor. Caleb's List is a beautifully descriptive account in which Kellan MacInnes intertwines his own personal struggle with HIV with the life story of Victorian mountaineer Caleb George Cash, beginning with the moment in 1898 when Caleb stood at the top of Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh and made a list of 20 mountains visible from its summit, from Ben Lomond in the west to Lochnager in the east. MacInnes stumbled upon this long forgotten list of hills, now dubbed the Arthurs, and in this book he sets a new hillwalking challenge ... climbing the Arthurs. Drawing on history, literature and personal experience, MacInnes offers both practical and emotional insight into climbing these hills, in an account that is a must-read for hillwalkers, visitors to Edinburgh and lovers of Scotland all over the world. This is not just a book about hillwalking and history. At its heart this is powerful landscape writing that explores the strong bond between a person and the hills they love . . . The author writes with skill and considerable authority. ALEX RODDIE, author Caleb Cash himself is an important if neglected figure in the history of the Scottish outdoors and the author's personal story gives the book an emotional power unusual in a guidebook. An excellent book. CHRIS TOWNSHEND, author A triumphant debut. THE GREAT OUTDOORS A tribute to the healing power of the Scottish landscape and to survival against the odds. THE SCOTSMAN

Book excerpt: A bestselling tale of passion and belief, magic and adventure from the author of The Secret Chord and of March, winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Bethia Mayfield is a restless and curious young woman growing up in Martha's vineyard in the 1660s amid a small band of pioneering English Puritans. At age twelve, she meets Caleb, the young son of a chieftain, and the two forge a secret bond that draws each into the alien world of the other. Bethia's father is a Calvinist minister who seeks to convert the native Wampanoag, and Caleb becomes a prize in the contest between old ways and new, eventually becoming the first Native American graduate of Harvard College. Inspired by a true story and narrated by the irresistible Bethia, Caleb’s Crossing brilliantly captures the triumphs and turmoil of two brave, openhearted spirits who risk everything in a search for knowledge at a time of superstition and ignorance.
