Book excerpt: This is an extended version of my PhD thesis which extends the theory of finite element exterior calculus (FEEC) to parabolic evolution equations. In the extended version, I explore some more precise visualizations of the defined quantities, as well as explain how the modern theory of functional analysis applies. In the main part, I extend the theory of approximating evolution equations in Euclidean space (using FEEC) to hypersurfaces. After these main results, I describe some possible extensions to nonlinear equations. A few appendices detail one of the original motivations for getting into this theory in the first place: canonical geometries given as steady state solutions and extremals of certain functionals.

This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thoroughly modern textbook for the sophomore-level differential equations course. The examples and exercises emphasize modeling not only in engineering and physics but also in applied mathematics and biology. There is an early introduction to numerical methods and, throughout, a strong emphasis on the qualitative viewpoint of dynamical systems. Bifurcations and analysis of parameter variation is a persistent theme. Presuming previous exposure to only two semesters of calculus, necessary linear algebra is developed as needed. The exposition is very clear and inviting. The book would serve well for use in a flipped-classroom pedagogical approach or for self-study for an advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate student. This second edition of Noonburg's best-selling textbook includes two new chapters on partial differential equations, making the book usable for a two-semester sequence in differential equations. It includes exercises, examples, and extensive student projects taken from the current mathematical and scientific literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let's face it- most students don't take calculus because they find it intellectually stimulating. It's not . . . at least for those who come up on the wrong side of the bell curve! There they are, minding their own business, working toward some non-science related degree, when . . . BLAM! They get next semester's course schedule in the mail, and first on the list is the mother of all loathed college courses . . . CALCULUS! Not to fear-The Complete Idiot's Guide to Calculus, Second Edition, like its predecessor, is a curriculum-based companion book created with this audience in mind. This new edition continues the tradition of taking the sting out of calculus by adding more explanatory graphs and illustrations and doubling the number of practice problems! By the time readers are finished, they will have a solid understanding (maybe even a newfound appreciation) for this useful form of math. And with any luck, they may even be able to make sense of their textbooks and teachers.

Book excerpt: At the summer school in Pisa in September 1996, Luigi Ambrosio and Norman Dancer each gave a course on the geometric problem of evolution of a surface by mean curvature, and degree theory with applications to PDEs respectively. This self-contained presentation accessible to PhD students bridged the gap between standard courses and advanced research on these topics. The resulting book is divided accordingly into 2 parts, and neatly illustrates the 2-way interaction of problems and methods. Each of the courses is augmented and complemented by additional short chapters by other authors describing current research problems and results.

Book excerpt: Calculus: Single Variable, 8th Edition promotes active learning by providing students across multiple majors with a variety of problems with applications from the physical sciences, medicine, economics, engineering, and more. Designed to promote critical thinking to solve mathematical problems while highlighting the practical value of mathematics, the textbook brings calculus to real life with engaging and relevant examples, numerous opportunities to master key mathematical concepts and skills, and a student-friendly approach that reinforces the conceptual understanding necessary to reduce complicated problems to simple procedures. Developed by the Harvard University Calculus Consortium, Calculus focuses on the Rule of Four—viewing problems graphically, numerically, symbolically, and verbally—with particular emphasis placed on introducing a variety of perspectives for students with different learning styles. The eighth edition provides more problem sets, up-to-date examples, and a range of new multi-part graphing questions and visualizations powered by GeoGebra that reinforce the Rule of Four and strengthen students’ comprehension.

Book excerpt: College Calculus: A One-Term Course for Students with Previous Calculus Experience is a textbook for students who have successfully experienced an introductory calculus course in high school. College Calculus begins with a brief review of some of the content of the high school calculus course, and proceeds to give students a thorough grounding in the remaining topics in single variable calculus, including integration techniques, applications of the definite integral, separable and linear differential equations, hyperbolic functions, parametric equations and polar coordinates, L’Hôpital’s rule and improper integrals, continuous probability models, and infinite series. Each chapter concludes with several “Explorations,” extended discovery investigations to supplement that chapter’s material. The text is ideal as the basis of a course focused on the needs of prospective majors in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). A one-term course based on this text provides students with a solid foundation in single variable calculus and prepares them for the next course in college level mathematics, be it multivariable calculus, linear algebra, a course in discrete mathematics, statistics, etc.
