Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The location is South Central Los Angeles, 1985, and every kid on the block is getting paid in full selling crack cocaine, but not DAIQUAN JOHNSON. He's a slow to learn but good with his hands kind of kid whose dream is to become an engineer one day. DAIQUAN is hard working and doesn't give in easily, but all the determination in the world may not prove enough for a passing grade in a major they said he had no business in. Academic probation, a teenage father, and below average math skills are just part of his problems. DAIQUAN'S worse fear is soon realized when he finds that his confederate battle flag waving Calculus professor, GODDAME has a hatred for the color black. The continuously applied stress-strain curve of life events diverts DAIQUAN'S attention away from higher education while he contemplates a potentially lucrative and illicit offer from his best friend back in the hood, Michael Miller, nicknamed Deadly Paws. But if DAIQUAN decides to challenge the Jim Crow calculus instructor, he must get a perfect score on his final exam or dwell in a world where crack is king.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the numerical solution of crack problems. The techniques to be developed are particularly appropriate when cracks are relatively short, and are growing in the neighbourhood of some stress raising feature, causing a relatively steep stress gradient. It is therefore practicable to represent the geometry in an idealised way, so that a precise solution may be obtained. This contrasts with, say, the finite element method in which the geometry is modelled exactly, but the subsequent solution is approximate, and computationally more taxing. The family of techniques presented in this book, based loosely on the pioneering work of Eshelby in the late 1950's, and developed by Erdogan, Keer, Mura and many others cited in the text, present an attractive alternative. The basic idea is to use the superposition of the stress field present in the unfiawed body, together with an unknown distribution of 'strain nuclei' (in this book, the strain nucleus employed is the dislocation), chosen so that the crack faces become traction-free. The solution used for the stress field for the nucleus is chosen so that other boundary conditions are satisfied. The technique is therefore efficient, and may be used to model the evolution of a developing crack in two or three dimensions. Solution techniques are described in some detail, and the book should be readily accessible to most engineers, whilst preserving the rigour demanded by the researcher who wishes to develop the method itself.

Book excerpt: Boundary value problems for partial differential equations playa crucial role in many areas of physics and the applied sciences. Interesting phenomena are often connected with geometric singularities, for instance, in mechanics. Elliptic operators in corresponding models are then sin gular or degenerate in a typical way. The necessary structures for constructing solutions belong to a particularly beautiful and ambitious part of the analysis. Cracks in a medium are described by hypersurfaces with a boundary. Config urations of that kind belong to the category of spaces (manifolds) with geometric singularities, here with edges. In recent years the analysis on such (in general, stratified) spaces has become a mathematical structure theory with many deep relations with geometry, topology, and mathematical physics. Key words in this connection are operator algebras, index theory, quantisation, and asymptotic analysis. Motivated by Lame's system with two-sided boundary conditions on a crack we ask the structure of solutions in weighted edge Sobolov spaces and subspaces with discrete and continuous asymptotics. Answers are given for elliptic sys tems in general. We construct parametrices of corresponding edge boundary value problems and obtain elliptic regularity in the respective scales of weighted spaces. The original elliptic operators as well as their parametrices belong to a block matrix algebra of pseudo-differential edge problems with boundary and edge conditions, satisfying analogues of the Shapiro-Lopatinskij condition from standard boundary value problems. Operators are controlled by a hierarchy of principal symbols with interior, boundary, and edge components.

For some of us, the word conjures up memories of ten-pound textbooks and visions of tedious abstract equations. And yet, in reality, calculus is fun and accessible, and surrounds us everywhere we go. In Everyday Calculus, Oscar Fernandez demonstrates that calculus can be used to explore practically any aspect of our lives, including the most effective number of hours to sleep and the fastest route to get to work. He also shows that calculus can be both useful—determining which seat at the theater leads to the best viewing experience, for instance—and fascinating—exploring topics such as time travel and the age of the universe. Throughout, Fernandez presents straightforward concepts, and no prior mathematical knowledge is required. For advanced math fans, the mathematical derivations are included in the appendixes. The book features a new preface that alerts readers to new interactive online content, including demonstrations linked to specific figures in the book as well as an online supplement. Whether you're new to mathematics or already a curious math enthusiast, Everyday Calculus will convince even die-hard skeptics to view this area of math in a whole new way.

Book excerpt: A concise introduction to calculus that focuses on how to solve problems. Designed for first year students in engineering and the physical sciences. Fancy-pants calculus books are easy to find. There are so many it's a wonder that we aren't drowning under the crush. There are three times as many "math" listing on Amazon as there are "sex" listings. This may be because nearly a million American college students are expected to shell out some $200 annually to purchase these doorstops that they never even crack open. This book is not fancy. And it doesn't have pants. "Doing Calculus" is a giant step backwards in publishing. There are no bells and whistles. Unlike those those other calculus books, the ones with gee-whiz animations that rattle your teeth and on-line assessment tools that blink and flash and pop your cerebellar networks into a seemingly catatonic overload, it's just ink on paper. With lots of snarky comments hidden between the lines. And cool pictures. Sure, there's a web page (http://calculuscastle.com), but there's virtually nothing useful on the web page, so it is unlikely to drive you nuts. And equally unlikely to crash your computer. Calculus might drive you bonkers, but the web page is unlikely to do more than mildly amuse you. "Doing Calculus" is not just another doorstop. You might have to buy several, though, and glue them together (and to the floor), to make a really effective door stop. Though it is thin enough that you might actually be able to cram it under some doors. Depends on the door. From the creator of http://integral-table.com.
