Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Division II: Aerodynamics, Volume 7: Wing Theory in Supersonic Flow examines the cases of isolated simple wings, wings with vertical plane tail, cruciform wings, and simple or cruciform wings fitted with a body. This book presents the method for the actual calculation of isolated wings or of more complex system. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the basic equations in the mechanics of inviscid fluids. This text then presents a unified theory that is established for angularly shaped wings in supersonic flow. Other chapters consider the method for calculating the characteristics of drag, lift, and moments for various shapes of the trailing edge line. This book discusses as well the wings of ordinary shapes, delta wings, yawed wings, polygonal wings, trapezoid wings, and arrow-head or swept-back wings. The final chapter deals with a delta wing with a central fusiform body. This book is a valuable resource for teachers, students, and specialists engaged in modern aerodynamics.

Book excerpt: In this textbook, the author introduces the concept of unsteady aerodynamics and its underlying principles. He provides the readers with a full review of fundamental physics of the free and the forced unsteadines, the terminology and basic equations of aerodynamics ranging from incompressible flow to hypersonics. The book also covers the modern topics concerning the developments made during the last years, especially in relation to wing flappings for propulsion. The book is written for graduate and senior year undergraduate students in Aerodynamics, and it serves as a reference for experienced researchers. Each chapter includes ample examples, questions, problems and relevant references.

This book was released on 1967 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of the present analysis is to investigate the high-speed aerodynamic properties of a blunt delta wing at low angles of attack where the maximum lift to drag ratio occurs. Oguchi's solution of hypersonic flow over a blunt leading edge flat plate at zero incidence is extended to three dimensional delta wings at angle of attack. The shock wave shapes and pressure distributions were obtained by employing the oblique shock relations at the windward sides of the Prandtl-Meyer equations at the leeward side of the wing. The total lift and drag of the wing due to pressure and skin friction were computed by numerical integration using the IBM 7094 computer. The present calculated aerodynamic forces generally agree with the experimental data at the high supersonic Mach numbers (M approx.> or = 4) and lower thickness ratio of the wing which is a 70-degree swept slab sided delta wing with a cylindrical leading edge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents computations of the flowfield around an 80 degree sweep delta wing undergoing a constant roll-rate maneuver from 0 to 45 degrees. The governing equations for the problem are the unsteady, three- dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The equations are solved using the implicit, approximately-factored algorithm of Beam-Warming. Fixed roll angle results are also presented and compared with experimental measurements to demonstrate the ability of the numerical technique to accurately capture the flowfield around a rolled delta wing. The dynamic behaviors of the vortex position and strength, as well as their corresponding effect on surface pressure, lift and roll moment, are described. A simple, quasi-static explanation of these vortex behaviors based on effective angle-of-attack and sideslip angle is proposed ... Delta wing roll, Vortex dynamics, Vortical flow, Unsteady maneuver.

Book excerpt: The pressure distribution predicted by the modified Newtonian theory is used to develop equations for the aerodynamic forces, moments, and stability derivatives for components of hypersonic lifting configurations. In conjunction with the equations, a set of charts is presented to enable simple determination of the aerodynamic characteristics of swept cylinders, swept wedges, spherical segments, and cone frustums at zero sideslip and angles of attack from 0 to 180 degrees. This method allows evaluation of most delta wing-body combinations without the need for numerical or graphical integration. As an example of the procedure, the theoretical characteristics of a blunt 75-degree swept delta wing are calculated and compared with experimental results.

Book excerpt: A computer program has been written to calculate the heat transfer on the windward side of a delta wing in hypersonic flow. The program utilizes the small crossflow theory of Vaglio-Laurin. Heat transfer values are calculated for both the laminar and turbulent boundary layer cases, and results are compared with experimental data on delta wings available in the literature. (Author).
