This book was released on 1978 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single electron capture and ionization cross sections have been calculated for collisions of He(++) with Li over the relative collision velocity range 0.1-10.0 x 10 to the 8th power cm/sec. For low collision velocities (i.e., v = 0.1-0.6 x 10 to the 8th power cm/sec), a molecular approach has been used to determine the electron capture cross section. Ab initio potential energy curves and coupling matrix elements have been computed for the (HeLi)++ system and used in a cross section evaluation based on the perturbed-stationary-state method. For the low velocities, the electron capture reaction He(++) + Li yields He+(3l) + Li(+) is found to dominate the collision process and proceeds with a large cross section, sigma approximately 10 to the minus 15th power sq cm, thus providing the possibility for population inversion and the subsequent emission of Lyman-alpha (304 A) and Lyman-beta (256 A) soft x-ray photons. At the higher velocities (i.e., v=1.4-10.0 x 10 to the 8th power cm/sec), a classical-trajectory Monte-Carlo method has been used to estimate both the electron capture and ionization cross sections. At 2.2 x 10 to the 8th power cm/sec, both cross sections are found to be equal, while one ionization dominates the collision process at higher velocities and electron capture dominates at lower velocities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of ion-neutral reactions is well recognized, especially in the study of the chemistry of upper atmosphere. The first section of the report is concerned with refining the calculation of the cross section from the long-range interactions, assuming an arbitrary classical potential. The cross section so found is not regarded as an approximation to the reaction cross section, but rather the cross section for any sort of significant interaction, that is, the sum of the cross sections for elastic scattering, inelastic scattering, and the various reactions that can occur. The next section is a rigorous analysis of the experiments, based on the kinetic theory of gases, from the point of view of expressing whatever macroscopic parameters the experiment yields in terms of the reaction cross section, which is assumed known as a function of energy. An approximate method is developed which inverts the relationship and yields the reaction cross section as a function of energy if the experimental data are adequate. The final section applied the above-mentioned method to various reactions. This is believed to be the only way to find the cross section as such for ion-neutral reactions in the energy range somewhat above thermal. Some new and unexpected results were found by this method, especially for the H2, Ne reaction. (Author).
Book Synopsis Measurement of Atomic Collision Cross Sections by : R. F. Stebbings
Download or read book Measurement of Atomic Collision Cross Sections written by R. F. Stebbings and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production of Lyman-alpha radiation in H(+) -H (1s) collisions has been investigated. The cross sections for 1s-2p excitation of the thermal-energy-target H atoms, and for electron capture into the 2p state of the projectiles, have been determined separately. These measurements are of particular significance in that they provide experimental information on a heavy-particle inelastic collision, involving only one electron, in which the states of all interacting particles are determined. Comparison with the results of calculation subjects the validity of the scattering approximations to direct scrutiny. It appears that the low energy behavior for both excitation and capture is adequately represented by theory as is the highenergy behavior for electron capture. The calculations appear to over-estimate the cross section for 1s-2p excitation by about a factor of 2 at the high energies. Electron impact ionization of molecular oxygen was investigated in the immediate vicinity of threshold using electron beams of high energy-resolution. The results suggest that a re-evaluation of the mechanism of the ionizing process may be necessary.
